I know someone who lives out in the middle of nowhere (130 miles to the closest major city, and a 20 minute drive on the highway to get groceries) and their only car is a chevy bolt. They absolutely love it, and it gets them everywhere the need just fine. Sure, when they drive into the city to visit family they have to charge once they get there. But that isn't an issue for them since they just plug in at the garage.

@@FoodKart average people 100% care about good acceleration and merging speeds, exp if they merge onto highways alot. Nobody is saying this needs 0-60 in 5 seconds, but 13+ seconds feels dangerous for many drivers.
Stopped at a yeild merging onto a highway where people are flying up on you at 70-75 mph. Count out 13 seconds and imagine how quickly a person going 70+ mph is going to come up on you even if they are far away. Even on regular roads turning onto to it and having to accellerate up to 50-55, all it takes is seconds for a distracted driver to fail to see you're not going at the speed limit. Yes in these situations your tech not at fault, but it doesn't mean that your slow ass car isn't creating those situations.

We just bought a 22 HRV. Magic seats, much better cupholders, and despite a smaller motor its faster than this. This version lost all the charm and half the utility. The civic platform that “works in its favor” cost it 4 MPG, made it slower, and got rid of magic seats, one of the best features of the car. All for… what?

Honda stopped because the competition in Europe was far better with atleast 3x the cargo space in a same size vehicle. Unfortunately we don't have any other CUVs that can even hold a candle to this HR-V in the states.

My dad has the 22 hrv i find the front seats very cramped and footwell very narrow. Not very comfortable for a long drive unless your a tiny person lol.

Its weird how I never had a problem with 1.6l diesel 120hp CR-V when I need to move it a little bit into faster traffic, tho, you're thinking like you're getting onto HIGHWAY when ur fully stopped, so u need to accelerate from 0-60 in 2sec so u wont get rear ended, oh yes, we all have hundreds of thousands of dollars for fast cars.

This thing is so simple, very pretty design as well, I love the materials as well! The door card deigns seem very rugged and kid friendly! I was planning to obtain one in the near future as a family car but the lack of rear vents is a downer due to scorching summers in Southern California. Don’t want to put an infant back there like that

I was thinking the same thing. I’m also in SoCal and I’ve experienced some baking summers here. It’s small enough that maybe the front vents can be sufficient for rear passengers, but I’m still disturbed that Honda didn’t put rear vents even in the EX-L trim. I’m assuming it has under-seat vents, but will need to check for myself. I’m confused by Honda’s thinking with this vehicle. They put the effort into designing an attractive and interesting vehicle. Then they gimp it with a weak engine and missing some key features like rear vents and a rear center armrest.

@@adamesd3699 I agree dude, they knocked it out the park with exterior design and some interior ques, but the thing you stated are a bummer and will have me looking at other Japanese manufactures in this segment. This engine will be reliable due to not having higher combustion chamber pressures due to a turbo, but it is fairly large and look like it gained weight so this thing will be in need of torque. atleast the earth dreams 1.5t, or even an older k24. As of now, the hr-v is sadly behind in practically in the compact suv(cuv) segment

I have this trim but FWD. I must say the engine doesn’t bother me. I live in WPB, Florida and for regular commutes to school and work is a pleasure to drive. I’m not into performance just functionality so the tech upgrades were pleasant. Yes I agree it’s a bit sluggish when merging but once you’re up to the speed it’s nice. But I was able to get to 60 in about 9 seconds is the only difference in this video. I enjoy driving it for my lifestyle and needs and I adore my car. This car honestly is for a certain niche of individuals definitely not for everyone.

Looks very nice, but for me it needs more power. Very useable option(s) would be: turbo or hybrid version with the 2.0 as the beginning platform. That would raise the bar for sure.

@@Moonlight-hq3gi good point but I respectfully disagree. Honda’s CVT is solid and not even a torque converter would improve the 13 second sprint by much. The 2.0 is downright gutless. For them to use this powertrain then the HRV would’ve need to weigh around 2800lbs, otherwise it’s too sluggish.

It’s not 13 seconds, that was definitely somewhat uphill. Motor Trend tested it at 9.5 seconds and some others have it in the 8 second range. perfectly acceptable for the class that it competes in.

I own a 24 sport. I use it for a 20 min commute to work in Alberta where the AWD is amazing in winter ( 8 months a year ). The inside is gorgeous, good feel to it feels like it is a quality Honda build. But yes, the performance on the highway is atrocious, and after 5 months I had my first real " Ok that was dangerous because the engine won't respond". If you do not need to pass people, and live in a cold climate this is a fantastic quality Honda vehicle. If you need to make quick on and offs on the highway forget about it. Just my opinion.

My 2002 Prius does 0-60 in about 13 seconds, but it has instantaneous torque (0-30 is only 3 seconds!) Never feels dangerously slow.

Automakers grow their models to make room for lower end cars to grow and to also make room for future models. It’s rumored that Honda has a SUV 🚙 coming that’s going to slot in between the HR-V and CR-V that is why the HR-V cuts off at the EX-L trim level, to make room for pricing of the new model that’s going to slot above it.

Honda really stepped it up with this HR-V. It was a decent car when it came out in 2016, but I think the interior and exterior design is really nice ~~ Plus, it's just a car that you can haul around from place to place like the Civic. I mean, it's a commuter car, and I think this HR-V works well in that sense. I still prefer the Civic over this, but those looking for a nice car to drive around every day, this might be a good option. I've never driven a car with a continuously variable transmission, but wow that is a slooooowww car. But again, this car is not meant to be a fast car.

Haha, I thought the black floor show room model looked like a macan too at first glance-the sales guys gave me a sideways look when I said this Ok maybe similar to Audi’s Q3 if you blink. Still need to test drive this model, as I thought it looked very sporty. Decision is between 2023 HRV @ $33K or 2023 Q3 @ $43K. If I go HRV, it means I get the car AND a weeks vacation at Maui’s Four Seasons when Covid numbers come down…hmmm, Q3 is making it tough to “downsize”.

Not mentioned is that the new HRV still can’t achieve more than 30 mpg on the highway. We just did a video on a Rogue Sport and despite less HP it surprisingly felt peppy around town and while also slow it never felt it was straining. It’s interior quality is also pretty good. This HRV is a disappointment compared to how impressive the new civic is.

Nice review. I'm thinking of getting this EX-L for my wife but I feel that Honda missed a HUGE opportunity with not adding LED fog lights and hands free tail lift. That would have been nice especially on the top of the line model. Also, they could have added a rear a/c vent and usb ports like the CR-V. So I'm not sure if I'll go with it. 🤔

This would be fine, in a city. Being at a stop sign with a full car while trying to get onto a busy state highway would be a bit scary. I'm glad they made the HRV a size that makes more sense, but it really needs an option for more power. A hybrid power train would suit it well.

Increased the power, increased the weight for almost no gain in power to weight on average. If the old one was so severely under powered (as most testers have said, and which kept me away) then what have they done here other than reduce the fuel economy in the process? This seems like a silly update which ends up largely cosmetic. Really should have thrown the 1.5t in this tuned down a touch ending up with more power than this and better economy.

I like the look of this, but CVT is a deal breaker for me. I don't particularly care for a slushbox with constant droning and having to rev the nuts off the engine just to get some acceleration. I'm still waiting for Ford Maverick to be available for ordering again. I'd like the turbo 2.0 in the Maverick, I've heard they're pretty good.

Bigger, even slower than the previous one (which was quite slow), no more magic seats. The front of an Escape, the back end of an Outback with that bubble like lift door, rounded shape interior of the 90's except that civic board. Meh. Honda offerings are going downwards. Overall quality suffering, performance as well, looks so ordinary. I miss the Honda brand that had quality, sportiveness and fun to drive of previous years.

If I had the practicality needs that the HRV satisfies, I’d buy a civic sport hatch and a set of snow tires on separate rims (if my concern was inclement weather during the winter)

The car is nice, but I see that most car brands are forgetting the side where the passenger goes, that area looks a bit empty.

Could the HRV be a conspiracy to buck the trend of ditching low cars for SUVs? As much as it's competition is a Corolla cross, the Civic Hatch 2.0 will also get cross shopped against HRV

I like it. In fact they could have used the same vents from the Civic. This is a Civic in reality. Similar to the Subaru Impreza/Crosstrek.
