Great job, beautiful bike. I felt right your 701/501 riding comparison, having ridden my 701 for 17.000km, I really enjoy and prefer my 500EXCF, even on road. Yes 690/701 are very good bikes, but 500 is on another planet of joy and fun. I rode enduro single tracks last week end, joining the track after 80km of road, with my Enduristan Blizzard XL saddles fed with tools and tubes. No hard frame (I considered True North Moto as well, but not needed for my European programs), no tower, no cush drive, no drone, no camping gear. I would certainly fit them if my program was out of Europe.

The nav tower and rack are really neat. Good idea re the bigger clutch cover for more oil capacity, did you ever investigate the 3 ring piston idea I mentioned? For those who have not heard, the only reason why 500/501 need more frequent oil changes is because they are fitted with 2 ring pistons whereas the 690/701 have conventional 3 ring pistons. Put a 3 ring piston in a 501 and theoretically it extends oil changes to 701 mileage. The 501 is not in a higher state of tune than a 701, in reality it is slightly milder if you ignore the mythical output v reality.
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Жыл бұрын
Oil volume is a lot less. The 701 is 1.7 litres. The engine originates from the old LC4 Dakar race engine. It has two eaton oil pumps that squirt cool oil up under the piston crown. Completely different engine to the 501 in so many ways, not just rings.
@jamesfairmind2247 Жыл бұрын
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV It is on the current engines but the 2016 500 had a bigger oil capacity than the 701 relative to cc. It was 1.5 litres v 1.7 litres for the 701 and it was still supposed to need 500 mile changes so oil capacity alone is not the reason, but yes the twin pumps do make a difference. I would love to see an experiment with a 3 ring piston though. After all it has worked on millions of 4 stroke engines over the last century, most of which only had a simple single oil pump system.
@jamesfairmind2247 Жыл бұрын
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV It is one the current 500 engines but the 2016 KTM 500 EXC had a larger oil capacity than the 690/701 relative to engine CC. It had 1.5 litres v 1.7 litres yet still only had short oil changes. I take your point re the twin pumps on the 690/701 but I have to point out that hundreds of millions of 4 stroke engines have been running with 3 ring pistons and only simple single oil pumps for over 100 years. The 3rd ring is there to prevent the carbon deposits from contaminating the oil, take that away and no matter what oil capacity you have the oil will degrade quicker. KTM went for 2 rings because race engines get an oil change every race so the contamination was considered less important than reducing friction by removing the 3rd ring. In actual fact there is no measurable difference in friction that can be seen in performance loss and frankly they should at least on the 500/501, used a 3rd ring in my humble opinion. The reason they did not was for standardisation of their pistons.

Great stuff Dave/MAD Tv. I'm intrigued by the Mancave(?) tower. I have a 690 Enduro 2020 model. It has KTM performance parts upgrade leds, but they are not up to the job especially on the road - dangerous in my opinion (for my wishes anyway). We do tons of road riding to get to minimal legal lanes! Would love to know what it's like for you on the 501. I don't want a huge tower, rally style. Any thoguths from you or your readers would be appreciated. Am in the UK, so preferably legal for road use. Thanks and look forward to more content,

I love how yours is coming along, looks awesome so far. I don't quite have the same budget but so far, after picking up my heritage on xmas eve, I've fitted the acerbis exhaust guard, lower fork protectors, and the seat concepts comfort xl (the standard comfort wasn't much better than stock seat). In terms of rally tower, I chose the Ambro-Racing tower as it's about half the price and half the weight and seems about the same quality and specs. I'm in communication with George at Globetrottin' for the rear rack (similar to the TNM but rated to carry around 10kgs more for the same price). In the meantime, I'm fitting a simple rear rack to carry a day ride worth of gear as the Globetrottin rack may take a couple of months. I'm still undecided about the cush drive (mainly due to cost at over $1k) and hoping to do more offroad than on, so the built in cush in the gearbox will hopefully be enough. The main surprise so far is although I love the bike, it feels like riding a bag of rocks. The vibration is so intense, my head feels like it's going to fall off after about an hour. Wheels are balanced etc so I guess it's just a characteristic of the engine... Keep the vids coming, I love following your project!

Very nice bike - for the kind of riding you can do in Australia. And while light is always better, it doesn’t need to be that light for most riding we can legally do here in Europe. Here other qualities are important: park the exc or fe in some cities in front of a McDo and it will be gone by the time you get your burger - it doesn’t have any kind of lock! On top of that: a typical 3 week trip here in Scandinavia can easily end up at 5000, 6000km - that would be two or three oil changes on the road. And with 15.000 a year thats st least one rebuild every year. Price wise: after all the necessary upgrades you will be up at 15.000Euros or more, for that money I prefer the 690/901 or even the 901 I got now. But again: it as all comes down to the kind of riding you do! On a 901 I would have no chance following you guys on your trips, on a 501 I might have! 😂

My 2018 500 with cush drive has the best feeling gearbox of any serious dirt bike ive owned.Clutchless changes up and down and feels almost identical to the quickshifter on the 690. Let us know if you end up having problems finding neutral. Mine is almost impossible and i now just hit the kill switch then pull the clutch in before starting. MIne is OK for 110kph on the highway for shortish periods but if you push down hard on the pegs at those speeds, you can feel lots of vibes in your feet but its not a problem when in the dirt. IN comparison, my 690 is super smooth and feels great in the dirt compared to the 500 but its front brake isn't as good as the 500 brake.

Hi Dave. Is the stock headlight LED? I bought an Adventure Men Cave tower for my CRF300L because of this video and now that its plugged in all my indicators flash rapidly.

This is typical, you need an LED relay. Not much and you just connect it.

No it doesn’t. Katos next year go to the same sub frame. But carry camera gear as well hence the rack

Hello , I loved this videos , I want toe get a fe 350 , I want to use it mostly on the road around the city as a daily commute bike , but won’t use it more than 1 day per day , beside the Cush drive and a rekluse auto clutch, is there anything else to consider? Do you think it will behave well on the road ? Will it get 60 km easy ? Maybe more ? Or do you think is a waste of money for what I thinking to do ?
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Жыл бұрын
I don’t think that’s a good idea
@carlitoxbro10 Жыл бұрын
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV could you explain me why isn’t a good idea? I will use it for 1 hour per day and the use only would be on the road , so it will be a very gentle use rather than enduro use . In one of your videos is mentioned that they have done 4.500 km on enduro , that would be for me roughly 6 months of use . So why would it be a bad idea ? Thank you
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Жыл бұрын
i@@carlitoxbro10 It's not meant for that. It will do it. I could write an essay on your first response. Why would you need a cush drive on a 350? Why do yo need a recluse clutch for adv riding? Why would you use a highly dirt oriented bike for commuting? The list goes on.
@carlitoxbro10 Жыл бұрын
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV the reasons are because it is a badass bike , I love then way it looks like , the Cush drive is to avoid problems with the transmission and gears to protect them as in dirt the wheels tent to slip on the ground so the Cush drive does something similar , the auto clutch is because I have my left hand sore , I have tried to sort out how to swap the clutch and front brake hoses so I can control the clutch and throttle with my right hand and the brake is easy for me with my left hand , but the master cylinders piston seems diferente so hasn’t found the way to do it , I am aware of service hour every 15 hours which for me would be roughly every two weeks, I am ok with that , and every 50 hours , valves clearance checks by my dealer bike shop , mmm I want it because is no boring as a scooter, and it’s quite light , I love the way it looks with the tkc80 or the pirellie scorpion. Thanks
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Жыл бұрын
@@carlitoxbro10 If it rocks your boat do it. But I couldn't service a bike every two weeks, that's not my cup of tea. I really don't think you need a cush on a 350, but I would be wrong.

Dave, why did you choose the PROL8NAV over the ENDUROL8NAV tower?

Funny reason, because Mark had the EnduroL8NAV, so I thought I'd do the other. The Enduro is a half a kg light than the tower.

Once you get your build done with big tank, comfortable seat, cush drive, small screen etc etc give all the manufacturers a call and ask why they don't sell a bike like this? Blows my mind that after all these years dual sport riders still need to buy all this stuff aftermarket.
