This Hyundai Ioniq 6 is the savior of sedans, because that's all this is. It's a comfortable sedan like we used to have in the 1990's. A Sedan is all the Ioniq 6 is trying to be. It's not trying to be a crossover, or an all-rounder. This car says: "I have the money to have a truck for dirty work, and a nice clean sedan for around town."

I seriously need to know what the hell went into designing that rear end. Like, it’s not even ugly or gross or even bizarre, it’s just *fascinating*. It’s like someone saw a Saab 96 and said “yes, THAT”, and desperately attempted to make it work. And fuck it man, I respect it. Keep making weird cars.

As an airplane nerd I never understood why every car these days has to look like it has the aerodynamics of a 2 story house. The teardrop shape looks good because it looks aerodynamic because it IS aerodynamic and having a purpouse behind the in design that isn't just "appeal to the primitive male desire for violence" is refreshing.
@BlackPill-pu4vi
@BlackPill-pu4vi Ай бұрын
Perhaps these blobmobiles are more aerodynamic in the wind tunnel than they appear. If you want a car that looks balanced and fast, even when parked, you'll have to go back to the 1960's. The Big 4 had the fastest looking cars but, they were not as aerodynamic as they appeared. Case in point, 1st gen Toronado, fastback GM B-bodies, Dodge Charger, AMC Javelin, Ford Torino, etc. So what? 1960's cars looked good and were actual status symbols. Nothing on the road today looks good; nor are they status symbols.

Hyundai also decided to bring the aerodynamic design to the key fob, so the key for it is, "smooth like a river stone." Which, okay, the key is a little big and goofy looking, but cute. ...but then the very next car to get that key design was the 24 Santa Fe. The least aerodynamic-looking car in the lineup so far. Little bit of cognitive dissonance there, but just figured you'd like to have a laugh at that design... choice like I did.

@@Noah_E Did you watch the video? i'll point you to 1:47. Personally, I like my car kept clean and tidy and not stacked with 80 cubic feet of junk. Hatchbacks hardly gain you any usable space anyways, as anything too long to fit in a sedan's trunk won't fit in a hatchback sideways, and you're not gonna be stacking anything a la tetris unless you're particularly masochistic, and enjoy crushed goods and falling cargo when you turn or open your hatch. A hatchback's shallowness means if you want cargo you lose two passenger seats, and the lack of a dedicated trunk is worse for rear-end safety as well.
@Noah_E

@@schwerganoik1633 why are bring hatchbacks into the discussion unless you are just looking for a pointless argument. Try to stay on topic. The Ioniq 6 has almost half the trunk space of a Model 3 (11.2 vs 21 cu ft) despite the 3 being 5 inches shorter, an inch narrower, and a roof that is 2 inches lower. Clearly the shape and design of the Ioniq 6 is worse. Even its frunk is significantly smaller (0.5 vs 3.1 cu ft) despite a 8% bigger footprint.

Something you missed; charging speed. This has Hyundais 800v architecture which can go 10-80 in under 20 min, and can get 100 miles into the battery in 6 min. It’s not the only one to do this but along with the ioniq5 and EV6, the Hyundai/kia EVs are some of (if not the) cheapest EV you can buy with this super high speed charging. Hit the bathroom, grab a quick bite, back on the road. 600 miles a day was easy. Can't really do this on any other electric vehicle platform. I think one big reason for the acceleration war among EV manufacturers is that everyone born prior to 1990 remembers the "economy cars" of the Malaise Era, cars where you measured acceleration times with a calendar instead of a stopwatch. I remember my parents had a Ford Pinto with an automatic, it was so slow it was actually dangerous, especially considering that we lived in New Jersey. This was of course the home of the "Jersey Freeway" where you pulled out of a strip mall parking lot on Route 4 or 17 or 23 straight into 55-60mph traffic and prayed you didn't get rear-ended before you could get up to speed. Back in the Malaise Era it looked like there was no room for cars to be fun any more unless you could afford either an old muscle car that was in showroom condition or one of a handful of exotic or luxury marques. I think there's an unconscious fear out there that concern over climate change and carbon emissions is going to force us into "Malaise Era II", with crappy, un-fun cars that are "good for the environment" and serve as basic transportation but nothing else.

Now, if only it didn't have the actual worst sound system I've ever heard in a car at this price point, then it would be a nigh perfect vehicle for my preferences. Guess you can't have everything.

The drive modes between Normal and Sport actually are different. Normal prioritizes rear motor but at any speed will kick on front motor and full power when you ask for it. In Sport, front motor is always engaged, whether you are breathing on the throttle or going full beans. Also you can set a custom drive mode and enable even shaper throttle response than Sport. There is a higher setting available.

I had an Uber driver in one of these, and she hates it. She said the 12v battery left her stranded so many times that she now never leaves home without one of those jump starter boxes in the car. The dealer kept say they had fixed the problem, but it kept happening. All the automated features of the vehicle only serve as obstacles that make everything more complicated than it needs to be. She previously had a model 3 and she very much regretted not getting another Tesla. For me, as a passenger, it was lovely... Smooth, comfortable,quiet...
@MugatuJag

I rented several Kia Niro EVS, both the last generation and the current generation. They were brand new and the 12V battery died every time. There is an accessory mode that you can put it in that uses the high voltage battery instead of the 12v when it's not in Drive. After I learned that it never died again, also there is a jump 12-volt button in the car that she probably doesn't know about. Stupid design but she just needs to read her manual as well

The sedan shape really makes good sense for EV's, since electric motors are much more efficient than combustion, so wind resistance becomes a huge factor when trying to get the most range out of a battery. This car also looks really good in silver. Giving it an unusual color would make it stand out too much with the design.

In Korea, This car is famous for its moldy smell, where all the rainwater flowing down from the windshield gathers in the cabin filter case🤢 It's not clear if this flaw is completely resolved.
@Neojhun

@@Neojhun Nah., it's a glitch designed to fail. The Ioniq 5 had a cabin filter on the inside of the windshield, so it didn't collect water, but with a different design on the same platform, the windshield moved back and the cabin filter was designed to be exposed to rainwater. Dealers did temporary waterproofing with silicone sealant, but it didn't work very well, and many car owners were disappointed with it

I almost bought one of these (in the worst named colour of them all: *biophilic blue*), but it was too geared for comfort than sport and that's what put me off. Other than personal preference in it's road manners I honestly couldn't fault the car one iota. It really is a big, wafty, 90s executive saloon car and I wildly appreciate Hyundai for being out-there with the styling. Seriously, more of this, please! For those that care, I ended up with a BYD Seal 3.8S instead in Atlantis Grey. It's not quite as sporty as a BMW but it has that "Bruiser Cruiser" energy I like.

Probably going to get a lot of flack for saying this, but traded an aging Model S for a Solterra (bZ4X). I did drive the Ioniq 6 loving the way it looked, and the specs. That however is where it fell apart for me. It looks like a low sleek sedan from the outside, but sitting inside it felt to me like a SUV (too high off the ground). It felt like it was experiencing an identity crisis. After test driving several EV's I ended up in the Solterra. It drives and feels exactly how I expected, despite the controversial specs, it's a vehicle that really suites my lifestyle here in Central OR. No regrets.

A friend of mine owns an Ioniq 6 and of all the EV's ive driven it is by far my favorite. I dont know how much there is to this beyond a feeling but, to me, it feels that as more companies pivot to "mobility" rather than being automakers a lot of what they make has started to feel less like they want to make cars rather, they want to make an Iphone you can drive. Hyndai/Kia seems like the only ones who understand that theyre making cars first and the look and feel should match that which I really appreciate. At the end of the day im a car enthusiast not a "tech" enthusiast and making this that are more of the latter and less of the former will only alienate peopld like me
