The Fast Lane Car 12:03 This is a random question, but are you sure this is a feature that cuts off all 4 tires from spinning? Or is it simply just a lack of torque? I also live in CO and actually live really close to this actual trail myself. I've always been taught that when all 4 wheels freeze up like that, it's because of a lack of torque to the wheels (in other words, not enough low gearing in 4 low or just an engine that cannot produce enough torque). It happens to me too and also a lot of off road vehicles, and when elevation takes away engine torque due to reduced engine aspiration, it just makes the situation worse :/ Regardless nice video! :) Love you guys bunches! I'm just wondering if this is the case
@TFLcar7 жыл бұрын
Great Question and we decided to test this as well. We drove the Renegade up a very steep hill (much steeper than GMH) but with traction. No problem, no cutting of torque. We also asked the Jeep engineers about this and they said the AWD system cuts power to the wheels to protect the drivetrain.

The wrangler would lose When there is no differential lock, the 4wd system would likely get stuck in mud or in the air on a “rear trail? Whereas the more adaptive awd systems of the Renegade and Compass can send the torque to the necessary wheel. They all have low range, they all have good enough grand clearance and pretty good angles. The wrangler would definitely lose. Just because it says wrangler doesn’t mean it’s amazing off road.

The Compass and Renegade both can fit and have the proper brackets for the 3.7L V6, but the whole point of these vehicles in the minds of FCA is to make SUV's that appeal to the economic mind, not the Jeeper mind. That doesn't stop Compass and Renegade users from having fun with them though. Those engines can produce a mean amount of torque considering 180 hp. That 9 speed gearbox is slower 0-60 given the lower range gearing, but, the gear shifting is definitely smooth and the amount of gears helps keep the engine in optimum RPM for Fuel efficiency

Will you guys ever turn traction control off? It's really a shame you are not using these 4x4s as they were designed to be off road. For instance from the Compass user manual pages 137-138: Partial Off (Four-Wheel Drive Models) Or On (TwoWheel Drive Models) This mode is entered by momentarily pushing the “ESC Off” switch. When in “Partial Off” mode, the TCS portion of ESC, except for the “limited slip” feature described in the TCS section, has been disabled, and the ESC OFF Indicator Lightwill be illuminated. All other stability features of ESC function normally. This mode is intended to be used if the vehicle is in deep snow, sand or gravel conditions, and more wheel spin than ESC would normally allow is required to gain traction. To turn ESC on again, momentarily push the “ESC Off” switch. This will restore the normal “ESC On” mode of operation. NOTE: To improve the vehicle’s traction when driving with snow chains, or starting off in deep snow, sand or gravel, it may be desirable to switch to the “Partial Off” mode by pushing the “ESC Off” switch. Once the situation requiring ESC to be switched to the “Partial Off” mode is overcome, turn ESC back on by momentarily pushing the “ESC Off” switch. This may be done while the vehicle is in motion. Full Off (Four-Wheel Drive Models Only) This mode is intended for off-highway or off-road use when ESC stability features could inhibit vehicle maneuverability due to trail conditions. This mode is entered by pushing and holding the “ESC Off” switch for five seconds when the vehicle is stopped and the engine is running. After five seconds, the ESC OFF Indicator Lightwill illuminate and the “ESC OFF” message will appear in the odometer. Push and release the Trip Odometer button located on the instrument cluster to clear this message. In this mode, ESC and TCS, except for the “limited slip” feature described in the TCS section, are turned off until the vehicle reaches a speed of 35 mph (56 km/h). At 35 mph (56 km/h), the system returns to “Partial Off” mode, as described above. TCS remains off. When the vehicle speed drops below 30 mph (48 km/h), the ESC system shuts off. ESC is deactivated at low vehicle speeds so that it will not interfere with off-road driving however, ESC function returns to provide the stability feature at speeds above 35 mph (56 km/h). The ESC OFF Indicator Lightwill always be illuminated when ESC is off. To turn ESC on again, momentarily push the “ESC Off” switch. This will restore the “ESC On” mode of operation.

@icosmicvii35685 жыл бұрын
The traction control was off 🤔. This is also from the manual. “Full Off” is the only operating mode for ESC in 4WD LOW range. The ESC system will be in this mode whenever the vehicle is started in 4WD LOW range or the power transfer unit is shifted into 4WD LOW range.

@@jarredl990 Actually I would have to agree with Danny, it also can depend on the weight of the vehicles. This is a good demonstration of the modern approach to off-roading. The cars just throw electronics at the problem, and if that doesn't work, then they just shut down. In the older vehicles, even in stuff as recent as the TJ, if you press the gas, it will go. It will go until something breaks or you get yourself out. That's the big advantage to using an older generation Jeep. They just keep going.

I think they simply may have screwed up in which mode to choose. I believe in rock mode it will stop you from going over something too difficult or flipping a rock over, and so simply halt like it did here. But if you choose a different mode like mud then the computer won't just cut power as it was doing here. It was an electronic limitation, not a power issue, and thus probably resolvable by reading the owners manual.

I love this video.. the fact you offroad tested these vehicles is so cool. THUMBS UP! Hillclimb vehicles operate usually in 4x4 at lowwww speed But neither suvs have enough lift/ correct suspension or tires to properly go through that last obstacle. Its really steep and deep. Flooring it wont help. Creating momentum was indeed the best option but be careful not to scrape the undercarriage of those beauties.

I know there are strong feelings on either side of the argument but both seem to miss the point. As a former Jeep Patriot owner, I can tell you the Jeep name means much more than what model you have. Jeep is more than physical parts. Jeep is about exploration, getting out to see new things, pushing your boundaries. Jeep recognized for most around the world, the mean just a rutted gravel road on the weekend in between a work week in the city. Not everyone needs to rock crawl and certainly not everyone wants Wrangler for daily use. Like it or not. Jeep can't survive on bitter Wrangler owners alone. You want more Wranglers, then Jeep needs to build more Renegades and Compass. Welcome to the world of consumers. Let people buy the Jeep that works for them. Compass and Renegade were never meant to be Wranglers and they were never advertised as such. They are however, more capable than other vehicles in their class, therefore, to those who buy them, they are Jeeps. My Patriot was far more capable than anyone would give it credit for. It helped me get out there and explore. It got me into the Jeep culture. That my friends, makes it a true Jeep.

@TheWVgoodguy227 жыл бұрын
A Wrangler is obviously better than these two off roading, especially the more hardcore stuff like stage 3, but these two would drive so much better on road than that bouncy loud brick in the wind Wrangler, especially the Sport which would be around the 30-34k mark and their visibility sucks in comparison. I do love the look and color of that Jeep Compass Trailhawk though. There are not many if any that can drive excellent on both the road and off road that is actually affordable brand new. I wish I could afford the new Chevy ZR2 so I can have my truck/but with some Wrangler off road ability for some of those hopeful future fishing and hunting trips. Great video, very enjoyable as always. Ciao! :D

Why would They ever put in a program to cut power to all 4 wheels that is just stupidity
@PatrickRich7 жыл бұрын
they don't and it doesn't. it just doesn't have enough wheel torque at those engine speeds to be able to brake 2 wheels in the air and have enough left over to turn 2 wheels on the ground on a steep hill. The wheels on the ground are getting the full might that the engine has to offer but at those speeds its insufficient.

Well said! Finally someone who understands what's going on and not writing it off as software programming! Traction control is nice, but it does have its limitations.
@flightmedic76347 жыл бұрын
Yes Brake Lock Differential is a awesome system but without a true low range it is limited once you're encountering steep terrain or obstacles. I've got a 2011 Liberty (with a true low range), in that application I can go over some ridiculous obstacles with ease because there's always enough torque to turn the wheels. It's a shame they couldn't have put a real low range in these (like the new Cherokee).
@OggyGTA6 жыл бұрын
I have pointed out to Fast Lane on several occasions that they are not disabling the traction control - holding the button down for 5 seconds disables the feature that cuts the power to the drive wheels when traction is lost.

Damn so much hate in these comments. I personally really like the renegades style and don't mind it being a fiat. It has decent fuel economy for daily driving and has great off road capability for its class when you need it. Most people buying these cars don't have off roading as a priority and want a practical daily that can take on snow and other obstacles when the time comes so I don't understand all the hate. I feel like all these guys hating are just sad with their 1996 Cherokee' s cuz they can't afford a new jeep. Let's see how much hate I get :)

Great video. Just got my Renegade last week. From watching the video, I suspect the Renegade needs two things; #1, A much lower gear ratio for 1st gear & #2, Electronic locking front & rear differentials. (The computer brake traction control system effectively cuts the available torque to wheel turn power in half - because a 20:1 1st gear ratio turns into a 10:1 gear ratio when the computer applies locking brake action to a wanna-be-spinning wheel that is in the air. -- That is why the Jeeps ran out of power in your video when climbing with wheels in the air. Either #1 and/or #2 would take care of 10:1 ratio you end up getting with computer wheel brake lock when climbing something with some wheels in the air). North Idaho Tom Jones
@TomJones-rb6ym6 жыл бұрын
Another problem which would be solved with electronic locking front and rear differentials is wheel binding. Just like in the Video, when the Jeep Renegade TrailHawk 20:1 gear ratio is climbing a steep hill with one wheel in the air and the computer applies a brake action to the wheel in the air to keep it from spinning which forces the other tire on the same axle to turn actually results in axle with one wheel in the air having a 10:1 gear ratio and the axle with both tires on the ground to have a 20:1 gear ratio. This is like putting one axle in in 1st gear and the other in 5th gear. The two axles want to traverse a different distance per revolution of the differential - this causes binding.
@TomJones-rb6ym6 жыл бұрын
Electronic computer brake traction control is great for low-traction surfaces such as ice and snow where you don't need the power. However in environments where you need the power to turn a single tire with good traction can only be properly and efficiently solved with locking differentials.
