Have to say I think the self charging hybrids are the sweet spot if you don't have a drive and wall charger. The Toyotas and Hondas seem to have the right balance of price and fuel efficiency.

Just bought one of these on 21 plate £16:500 with 40.000 miles. Only had it 6 days. I'm still learning how to get the most economy out of it. At the moment, getting between 70/80mph in hybrid mode. There are 4 modes ,full electric, hybrid, auto and sport. Sport is to recharge the battery. I charged it today with a 3 pin plug, from 35% to 75% in 2 hours. Had a Toyota prius plug in hybrid for 2 years previously to this car, i was getting about 80/90mpg out of it. The xceed first edition is a great car.

Great review Jim. Good to hear the economy for you was 60mpgUK in standard hybrid mode. Looks like I'm getting the phev as a company car! Costing me £66/month BIK. Couldn't get a cheap petrol car personal lease for double that on leasing sites! I can't always plug in when travelling as not all hotels have fast charge points. Careful management of the hybrid modes should increase the petrol mpg - use of EV to get up to speed, slow moving traffic jams. Then when on cruise control, switch over to hybrid mode to conserve battery for later in journey. I used to have a Toyota corolla and would get 65mpgUK in that. I'm hoping that the larger battery in this will just increase that somewhat.

Nice car. I agree with you though. I would save the cash and go for the cheaper petrol model.

Hello nice video as usual. What do you think of vauxhall astra K 1.6 diesel 6 speed automatic (2015 - 2019) ? Is it a reliable car ? Is there any known issues in the engine or the 6 speed automatic gear ? What about the comfort and the build quality specially the wagon/estate ?
@DefinitelyNotAGuru Жыл бұрын
Google “common issues” for that car, there are a few.

I might have missed it but have they reduced the capacity of the petrol tank to accommodate batteries Jim? Great video btw

Yes, 37 litres.

Yes it does

When calculating the “mpg’” the cost of electricity has to be factored in. I think the cost of the electricity would possibly exceed the price of the fuel saved. it would be interesting to see a comparison with say a Honda civic.

Not if you were on an off-peak tariff, such as the Octopus Intelligent. The cost of that has just been reduced to 7.5p per kwh, and you get 6 hours per night at that. That works out at around an 8th of the cost of using petrol. Assuming you could keep your battery charged from home most of the time for your commutes and shorter journeys, you'd save a packet. But really, for commutes and shorter trips most of the time, a full EV wins hands down on a cost per mile basis.....

@@Brian-om2hh I don’t think that the batteries on a phev are large enough to benifit significantly from this type of tariff. Also what is the additional cost for the remaining 18 hours? I suppose it depends on individual circumstances. I was offered a similar tariff from octopus but the marginal cost of the rest of the day would not have been beneficial. My current deal runs out in August so I’ll see what they offer. Also with a PHEV it would be hard to justify the cost of a wall box.
@Brian-om2hh Жыл бұрын
@@yvonnepickard1204 But that is why you'd need to maximise use of the battery for shorter trips and commutes. Legislation will appear at some point in the future, requiring newly sold plug-in hybrids to be capable of X miles on battery power alone. Although the amount of miles X is to be, hasn't yet been determined by the powers that be. The additional cost on Octopus Intelligent for hours outside the off-peak rate is another 6 to 7p per kwh, but if your usage at these times is lighter, or you are able to offset the additional cost with solar or a home storage battery, then it can work for some people.... You have to work out if it suits your needs. And yes, the cost of a wall-box charger is a factor, and as you say, probably not worth it for a PHEV. The biggest savings can be had by going full EV, with your own home charger, but again, the car needs to fit your driving needs. One snippet of good news I heard, was from a recent conversation with an estate agent who said that properties with an EV charger are now worth £1k to £1.5k more than similar properties without one.... You need to scout around for the keenest deals a bit nearer August. EDF were doing a good one, although I haven't looked recently. There are tiny signs of costs beginning to ease slightly. Octopus reducing their Intelligent EV tariff from 10p per kwh to 7.5p per kwh, being one example.....

Whats the wait time like for this model? Toyota are just too long to reccomeded now sadly.

About 7 months to best of my knowledge. 3 months for the petrol.

@@VintageLynx So you wouldn't wait a further 4 months for a car you'd potentially keep for years, given it's 7 year warranty?..

From memory, about 30; it was a while ago though so don’t quote me on that.
