Lmao! LAFC2 beat out Monterrey. The kids deserved the win. Pure grit and tenacity! This was def a cupset against Monterrey. If LAFC brought just half their 1st team, Monterrey would’ve been destroyed.

@@AleKun- allow me to reiterate, LAFC is the most valuable soccer club in the entire western hemisphere of the world. MBFC is team that had its first season in 2022, and had some of their best players missing for the game. LAFC did not send a random group of DTLA kids to play, these are handpicked prospects from throughout the world to represent the largest club on our side of the world. Does it mean nothing that at all that MBFC beat San Jose two weeks before San Jose beat LAFC? Do you not think the LAFC club owners were biting their nails when the game went to penalties after 120 minutes of playtime? Thankfully, for LAFC, the difference of continuing or being kicked out of the Open Cup may have come down to Eldin Jakupovic, a GK with just about 20 years of international professional experience. This isn’t to detract from the young LAFC team that came to play, they played their hearts out as did MBFC, but if you don’t think that Monterey were the underdogs coming into this match, you’re truly mistaken.

@@acealban Monterey Bay did alright for sure. But yeah San Jose is definitely not better than LAFC because of a narrow win that was won by a penalty made by the 3rd string center back that cost them the penalty. LAFC has been playing a very congested schedule and out performing most teams that have a whole week to recover for most games. LAFC did not care about this game whatsoever, if they did they would have brought some big team players off the bench. It was definitely impressive that they beat Monterey bay, I don’t care if it’s there first season. It was men against boys out there. Just because LAFC is the most valuable team in north and South America does not give them the same advantage that it does in other leagues due to mls rules to keep the league competitive. LAFC isn’t even the highest spending mls team. So I don’t see your point. Monterey Bay probably beats them 7/10 times maybe more. But regardless, starting 8 teenagers and getting the win is a stellar performance. And the backup goalie had a great performance as well. It’s 50/50 in that situation I don’t care how much experience the goalie has. Not only that but the Monterey Bay keeper was fantastic as well. The best goalies in the league lose penalty shootouts all the time. If you don’t think this version of LAFC team were the underdogs. Then you clearly don’t watch or understand much how soccer works here. MLS next pro is the 3rd division. USL is 2nd division. Even the worst USL team would be the favorites in this situation. It should have never went to penalties to be decided.
