A while back, I reviewed the new Land Rover Range Rover First Edition. I liked it a lot. But the one criticism I had of it was the atrocious fuel economy of the V8 engine. Now, the Range Rover PHEV is available and it provides over 80 km of gasoline-free electric driving. So is this the Range Rover to get over the V8 powered one?

Nice video! It’s nice to have the V8 but the fuel economy is really an issue, around 250-300miles for a full tank isn’t great for such a big SUV. This PHEV model is a good option since LR put a huge battery into a petrol car, 80km EV range +V6 engine really fulfill my desire for a hybrid luxury SUV. The new P550e would be sweet cause we got more power. The big downside for hybrid model is we don’t have the Long Wheel base option in North America. And no 23 inch wheel options, probably because the battery added too much weight so only 22 or small can hold 3 ton dry weight. If you can do a EV Range Test will be awesome cause more people care or curious about the actual world EV range.

I'm just scared of this beautiful beast. 😂 I can afford to purchase one, but I don't know if I can afford the maintenance on one.. so I guess I can't afford it 🤷🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️

So what is your overall thought on whether the extra price for the plug-in compared to gas only is worth the money or not?

Looking at the V8 and this PHEV, I'd go for the PHEV. I love V8 engines but in an ultra-luxury car like this, the ability to drive on electricity, while saving fuel, just makes so much more sense. I have not driven the non-hybrid inline-6 version of this SUV so I can't say if the extra cost of this hybrid is worth it.

OK, great fuel economy on short runs but why, in the interests of doing a complete review, didn't you do a longer run to check out real world fuel consumption, afterall, nobody does short journeys 100% of the time.

Let me ask you this, do you drive for more than 80 km in a day? Most people commute for only about 50 km and this SUV easily covers that. So it is real world driving. I was more concerned about doing the same type of driving I did with the V8 powered Rover (highway & city mix) to see how this one compares. And obviously, it's a lot better.

@keithhughes2104 You didn't answer my question. It sounds to me like you want to know what the fuel economy is like when the electricity runs out which means driving for over 80 km which is difficult in a normal daily commute. You're supposed to drive it on electricity as much as you can to your destination, plug it in if you can (which I did) and then drive it back home on electricity. That is real world driving a PHEV. Again, this SUV has a lot of electric range for a PHEV. But ok, I will keep doing things my way. Just keep in mind I'm not a full time youtuber like Straight pipes or throttle house. There are other videos on this car for you to find your specific answer.

Level 1 charging is considered anything up to 2.4 kW. 38 kWh divided by 2.4 kW = 16 hours. Pretty close to what Land Rover claims. @@MGReviewsBlog That can work in a small battery with 30 miles or less range--i know because I have done it. It will NOT WORK in a large battery with 50 miles range--I know because I have done it and am doing it as we speak in a brand new factory fleet Rover PHEV. 11 hours of charge and only 14 miles of range thus far out of a 120 volt. Do the math.....obviously you did NOT stick it in a 120 volt socket. I have looked at every review on you tube, over a dozen and NOT ONE person has done so. They are just repeating Rovers claim, which is 14 hours in UK web page and a ridiculous 7 hours claim in USA web page, and both are wrong. Unless the owner has access to a level #2 charger, the entire setup is pointless. And even if they do, the extra $10K for the PHEV over the non-hybrid and $2K for a home charger is not going to pay for itself saving $6K in gas costs over 48K miles. This is just a gimmick to appease the environmentalist evangelists and their climate religion. The standard Rover with inline six is the way to go.

@chadhaire1711 you're right. It doesn't make sense if your home wall outlet can only put out 1 kW of power. But if a home is wired for the 2.4 kW, it'll be a faster recharge time. Either way, on a car like this with this big of a battery (and costs well over $150,000 CAD), you should also be investing into a level 2 charger. This thing has a battery that's half the size of a BEV. You wouldn't use a level 1 charger on a BEV. That's why this PHEV also comes with level 3 capability because the battery is so big. Does the extra cost cover the fuel savings? Maybe not for everyone. It all depends on how you use it and for how long you keep it.

@@MGReviewsBlog How long to keep? NOBODY keeps a Rover after the warranty is gone--not unless they want to spend a fortune as it falls apart.....4 years tops. That applies to all Euro cars: Mercedes, BMW, Audi, VW, and any Italian......
