Damn commendable effort by Mahindra for the 700 series. I happened to see one on display at a local shopping mall and upon approaching thought that the bonnet was unlatched. Closer inspection revealed massive shut lines all about the vehicle; nice interior but those piano black surfaces were already heavily scratched/blemished and dumbfounded as to the certain high level of luxuries (Merc-like front driver seat controls, all manual for passenger side, Tesla like pop out door handles but halogen rear taillights). An interesting mix, and well priced.

As someone in the US (Miami), it's always interesting to see the somewhat off the beaten track options available in Oz. In a former life, I was a subcontractor to vehicle OEM's (selling enclosed truck space for film shoots, events and prototype transport) and chased Mahindra USA, for a short while. Their only focus stateside is farm equipment (they have brought in their version of the Jeep Wrangler but, short of some adventurous buyers, have never seen one in the wild.) Given Oz's relative proximity to Asia, as a whole, it stands to reason that consumers would be less judgmental when it comes to vehicles from the likes of India and China / Korea to a lesser extent. I spent 20 (formative) years in Singapore, so don't hold the same prejudices (My brother lives in Brisbane). Always a pleasure to run into your reviews, Paul. Thank you for the content, kind sir.

The suspension is so good I didn't notice I'd gone over a kerb. And it's a 7 seater! If only there was more leg room in front as I'm 6ft2. For those 6ft and less, I have not found any better Petrol version, and I've test driven lots. Since it's built to withstand Indian roads, it should be very reliable. The reason why Paul, you're not happy with a few functions and quality because there's still not much competition in India for Mahindra. Foreign cars have extremely high tariff. Need to lower the tariffs further. Competition will make this and other Indian brands world class. Or else China will always be ahead of us.
@kushagrashrivastava4880 Жыл бұрын
Well the truth is there is a fair amount of competition in Indian market. While it's true that foreign cars face elevated tariffs, this mainly applies to CBU imports. In reality, numerous automakers such as Kia, Hyundai, Volkswagen group, Honda, and others have a significant presence in the market and wield substantial influence with their diverse product offerings. Moreover, a substantial amount of their vehicles are manufactured locally in India due to which they are priced similar to their Indian competitors.

I am wondering if you(car expert ) get your comments through to the manufacturers . It seems to me that most of the new cars that you test have so much potential but they have 2-4 things that fall short. If the makers addressed this quickly then they may become market leaders at a price point.Take the Mahindra for example. The items you mentioned would be easy to fix on the production line but I don't believe the Asian makers are fully in touch with what Aussies want and the driving conditions.I have written to several large overseas manufacturers suggesting changes I think would put them ahead of the pack for Australian conditions that would be to their sales benefit but never received any reply's.

Mahindra have always built cars for hard going. To succeed in India is testimony enough. However, in Australia, they are up against the dealer network, who will not accept a reduction in profits. Hard luck Mahindra!
