2023 Mazda Miata RF (Manual) | Tail of The Dragon Test Drive Review!

👋 Thew new 2023 Mazda MX5 Miata RF is such a blast to drive on The Tail of The Dragon! This manual transmission Miata has got to be one of the best handling cars and was pure fun! Tis particular spec was fully loaded with the Brembo brakes, BBS wheels and Recaro seats. I think the Miata is so well balanced being a lightweight car and just felt like a go-cart. The Tail of the dragon is a very nice road spanning 11 miles and has 318 turns. The Miata felt so at home through all the switchbacks and was a joy to drive with the top down. It was about 50 degrees by the time we drove the Miata this day, and it just was so fun! I love how direct the manual shifter is and how you can't stop smiling behind the wheel. While the Miata is not a fast car, because it weighs so little, it felt quick enough and really didn't need any more power to do the Dragon in about 15 minutes. I knew you’d love this car! I own a 2008 Miata and it’s my daily driver. I sold my Bullitt Mustang because I was only driving my Miata. There’s nothing else like it especially for it’s bargain basement price! Great fun for a great price. Better than a Porsche Boxster on the twisties. Lightest, most nimble and quick enough!!

Did the same run on the Dragon in a rally last fall with my 2019 MX-5 Club with the same Brembo/BBS/Recaro package and full exhaust with racing header, although I was driving like a bat outta hell and 300 lbs lighter, being a soft top without a passenger or equipment in the trunk. So it was a bit more lively (and sometimes sideways) than this, haha. And btw, the RF is not better looking than the soft top, people just think it's better looking because it's slow enough for them to actually see. 😜 But it's definitely true, there aren't too many cars that can really outpace these in the mountains. I know this firsthand after watching V8 domestic guys who are only capable of slamming pedals individually and yanking on the steering wheel like primates because they can't do more than one driving input at a time. 🤣 The only ones that can really make a gap are the Porsche guys; there were several in the rally, including a GT3, and nobody can keep up with those absolute monsters. It's unreal how much speed they can carry into turns.

I love daily driving my Miata. It’s an automatic with the power retractable hardtop. It’s a 2008 with the total top down power hardtop rather than the partial targa top in the RF. All Miatas are fun whether manual or automatic. I’ve had both and loved driving them. I’ve also owned a Porsche Boxster which is a terrific roadster but felt heavier and less nimble! The Miata has the lightness and balanced handling that makes driving a thrilling experience!😊

@@BrosFOURRSpeed - the older NC is a bit roomier and has the complete 360” top down hardtop convertible. They’re getting more expensive too. Appreciation not depreciation! 2006-2015 NC models are my favorites! Low mileage 10 yr old models are almost $20k.

Right? I love my manual RF as well. There's just something about putting the top down that changes the entire experience. It's tough trying to explain how good and fun this car is to others who only look at spec sheets. I like that you mentioned that the body roll helps with grip. A lot of people just think stiffer is better and yeah it feels better but it's more difficult to feel the car. There's a balance to everything. Yes, I do agree that the Miata feels like it has too much body roll at times, but if you know what to expect, it's completely fine. The body roll only lasts until you settle into a corner, then you're good to go. Just slap on a Goodwin Racing exhaust and you can hear so much with the top down. It took me a bit to learn how to rev match correctly in this car too. The revs drop so fast that you need to be quick. Same with upshifting smoothly, you have to be on the gas a bit before you completely let off on your clutch to get completely smooth upshifts. Instead of letting the clutch out and then getting on the gas, you kind of have to let the clutch out while gassing at the same time. Also, if I may add, you guys are about 1 gear too high for the Dragon in that Miata. It tops out at 7500rpm and power doesn't come on until around 4700rpm. Just keep it in second gear until you hit 7,000 rpm then grab 3rd gear haha. It actually is very quick for that road if you're in the right gear.

It’s more fun to relax and drive an automatic Miata! Forget the rev matching struggles am just love the balanced nimble handling in corners with top down on the dragon! It’s all about fun not trying to do perfect rev matching!

@@rembo183 To each their own for sure. I like to be more engaged when driving mine. Don't get me wrong, I love automatics and DCT, as well as electric drivetrain but the manual in the Miata is a lot better than its manual counterpart. This is mostly due to Mazda not updating their 6 speed automatic for like a decade now. It's a very outdated transmission.

I highly recommend a quality Set of coilovers. It makes the car so much better. I didnt like the bodyroll so that was my first mod. Also some bars to stiffen it up.

I drove this road years ago in my old modded miata and the only thing that could leave me was some high end Porsche guys... Honestly i think i was just afraid of wrecking or i could have kept up at least. My biggest gripe with that road is its so tight that its hard to get up in speed. Then again thats where the miata shines.

Well done guys! I have a 2022 Miata GT soft top. Wonderful car, zero complaints. For those of you are tossing up between the soft-top or RF, I'd really recommend the full convertible experience. If you live in a snowy, wintery climate eg Canada or Scandinavia, and intend to drive the car throughout a northern chilly winter with snow etc, then may the RF is the one to choose. But if you live in a milder climate, year round smiles as you fling the top off in about 3 seconds flat...its the real Miata experience! BTW, I drove the 'sportier' version as reviewed here. I really couldn't tell the difference between the standard and Brembo brakes, maybe on a race track? The GT is also more luxurious with nicer wheels too! I can live without red calipers. So save your money and give the Brembos a miss.

Naw, the worst thing about the miata is that it's a convertible. Roof up windows down in the RF is sufficient on all but the best of days. The brembos definitely make a difference, and the recaros are worth every penny

I have a 2016 Club soft top with the Brembo / BBS package that I have been daily driving in 4 season weather. The BBS wheels are lighter than the stock wheels so my car is quicker off the line ! The Brembo brakes don't fade under hard repeated braking like driving on the dragon. Also besides the extra 120 pounds for the roof the RF carries its $3700 to $4800 more expensive than the soft top. The soft top is better with the top down than the RF because of the buffeting wind noise that come around 55 mph just by the design of the car. The RF also has blind spots caused by those buttresses for the roof. With the roof closed the RF is quieter. The soft top is way more durable than people here think.

Question for you to answer. I have a 22 supra with a stage 2 93 tune so you know how nice and strong my car is, BUT I miss driving a stick and the supra is so fast now after pinning the gas for 2 gears you are wayyyyyy over the speed limit. So would I be making a huge mistake going to the newer miata over the mighty supra in your opinion??? But also my favorite thing about my supra by far is the low down torque and I pretty only have straight roads where I'm at.

I love the power in it stock and dont feel I even need to tune it like I did on my last Supra. 2020 3.0. The Miata is a blast in the turns for sure and we enjoyed it. So it would depend how you drive the car. But if you want power and manual. Find a manual Supra!

@@BrosFOURRSpeed The RF has buffeting wind noises around 55 mph & up with the roof open. The soft top is definitely better with the top down ! Plus the RF has blind spots due to roof buttresses. Plus there is a weight penalty of 120 pounds in the RF not to mention its $3500 to $4800 more ! Add that all up - soft top is better. How do I know ? 2016 Club soft top with the Brembo / BBS package owner that daily drives it in 4 seasons. Its not just a weekend toy as many claim or a garage queen getting put away for the winter.

Why would you even compare this to that old of an suv?? Not even the same type of vehicle. But yes, it doesn’t have much power. Same goes for the GR86, BRZ, Miata, they are all super fun to drive. But don’t have much power compared to other sportscars. This doesn’t compete with suvs.

However 180 hp is very good for such a small car! In normal traffic you wouldn’t use all of that power! Their arm 100 hp cars that are fun to drive.

Nice review. Maybe this is unfair but you are complaining about power in the car but then off the throttle and on the brakes constantly when you don’t need to be. The car is capable of a lot more than what you see here. You are driving it like a much heavier car with more power. As another commenter said, the soft top is the way to go. I have a 23 BBR Club and it can carry serious speed through turns.

Have you driven the dragon? We were hauling. There’s turn you have to slow down..This car doesn’t have much power at all and that’s true. But as we said, one of the most fun cars that day. That and the GR86 were so good.
