Great Video! I just sourced a temporary spare from a 2008 Toyota Camry. It has a 155/70/D17 tire on a 17x4 rim. This gives this tire a 26.25" diameter, very nearly the same as the OEM 195/50/R19. There is no issues with offset, the hub diameter is the same at 60.1mm, the lug spacing is the same at 114.3mm. It fits well under the existing back cover. I trimmed the styrofoam blocks to provide support along the sides and in from of the tire. I did have to add a piece of 3/4" plywood to act as a spacer to make the center height even with the sides. This may be a another choice for 5th Gen owners.

Good stuff as I'm in the same boat with my 2024 Prius. I'm thinking of getting the same spare, jack and tools. Then using a Styrofoam cutter to shape the foam and reuse them.

Would it be possible to gut the inside of these two styrofoam pieces leaving the outside rims of the styrofoam on 3 sides only? Then just put the tire in? This way the floor piece would be supported on the edges and you won't need to add anything else to stabilize it? Great video thank you.

Toyota definitely failed here! Three nights ago driving my 2023 Prius XLE, I hit a pothole. The right front tire was gashed on sidewall a half inch from the rim. Totally not repairable. The car had to be towed to a safe place as I await a new tire delivery at the end of the week. Your video gives me hope for a spare tire. My measurements indicate a full size spare may be too large for the space. And, I'm concerned that the cable under the styrofoam could be damaged by the spare. I need to check if there's a hole to add a bolt and nut to secure the tire. Are there any others who have been successful adding a full size spare tire and rim in the back storage area. Thanks for any comments. BTW I've owned this vehicle for three months and love it. But, no spare tire is BS...Toyota!!

In my case there was not an orange cable in the rear cargo area. I assume you have either the awd or plug in model. Tesla vehicles and many other new cars also do not come with spares. One idea is to keep a full size spare at home. It seems useless but if you consider your story , the flat bed and several days of waiting for a tire may have been avoided.
@michaelkemmet834
@michaelkemmet834 Жыл бұрын
This isn't the best solution. The two biggest problems are that the tire off the Prius v isn't the proper diameter and the potential age of the used tire. The Prius v spare tire is sized 135/70/17 which gives it a diameter of 24.4". The tires on a gen5 Prius are either 195/50/19 or 195/60/17 which have an average diameter of 26.5". That means whatever corner you put the spare tire on will be sitting 1" lower than the other three corners. This wouldn't be a huge problem if you only needed the spare to get you a couple miles at city speeds to get home or to a tire store, but I sure wouldn't want that extra strain on my tires and suspension components if I was in the middle of nowhere and had to drive 20-50 miles at highway speeds to get to the closest town with a tire store. But I think the worst part is that any used Prius v spare tire in the US is going to be 6-12 years old already. Tire lifespans are 6-10 years no matter how good they look or how much tread is left. Spares that have been kept out of the elements are at the top end of that lifespan, but I still wouldn't trust them over 10 years. So even if you got the spare off one of the last Prius v's sold in the US(2017), you've still only got a few years left on that tire before it should be replaced. Real solutions? Get the wheel and tire actually speced for the gen5 Prius: Toyota part number 42611-21280 wheel and a 145/90/16 tire. About $175 for the combo; maybe $200 altogether including taxes and mounting fees. Or if you really want to use that Prius v wheel because it was cheaper and came with the tool kit, then at least get a new tire in either 135/90/17 or 145/80/17. Those tires will fit the Prius v spare wheel, get you 10 years of safe reliability, and be the same diameter as the other three tires on the car. There's also a way to convert a US Prius(but not a Prime) to carry a spare in a much nicer way, but it takes about $400-$600 in additional parts, some of which aren't available in the US yet. But when it's done, it would look completely OEM. If anyone wants the parts list, reply to this and I'll post them. But it's a longish list and this reply is already way too long.

What about the diameter difference with AWD, or even on the front with FWD? And my XLE AWD has a power cable and connection to the rear motor (I presume) on the metal floor.
@michaelkemmet834
@michaelkemmet834 Жыл бұрын
@davebristle6538 All Prius tires are the same basic size no matter the trim or options. The 195/50R19 starts life roughly 26.7"/678mm in diameter, while the 195/60R17 is roughly 26.2"/665mm. The proper 145/90D16 spare falls in between the two at 26.3"/668. AWD vs. FWD doesn't change any of those numbers. A correct sized spare will avoid the AWD power cable in the back, but it should still be protected. Buying the proper components from Toyota(not available yet) will do that.
@davebristle6538
@davebristle6538 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelkemmet834 The Prius V tire diameter is about 1" smaller--25.5" and 25.7. I've been told more than .5" difference can damage a driveline at speed. And that high voltage cable sticking up is worrisome. I suspect Toyota can't sell these components until they have cash-tested the cars with spares installed. It might change the rear crush characteristics and be a danger with the AWD high voltage cable.
@michaelkemmet834
@michaelkemmet834 Жыл бұрын
@@davebristle6538 Sorry if I wasn't clear. I think the Prius v spare tire as shown in the video is a terrible idea. The proper spare I was speaking of was a 145/90D16 tire on the proper sized wheel(I think it's a 16x4, also Toyota part number 42611-21280). That's the spare wheel and tire offered on the 2023 Prius in Japan and Mexico, and the one I bought for my 2023 AWD Limited. As for the high voltage cable, if you buy the proper foam protector(64778-47090) that lays on the metal floor and supports the spare tire, then the cable junction will have basic protection. This is how the car is offered in Japan in all trims/drives when ordered with the spare option. For the US market, Toyota also specifies a metal shield for the AWD junction(51978-47010) held on by three nuts(90179-06274). There are also replacement white trays(64997-47100 and 64995-47080) for a seamless conversion, as well as a carrier bolt(51931-10040) to hold the wheel in place. The issue at the moment is that none of those parts except for the wheel and tire themselves are available for purchase in the US. As of August 2023, Toyota has still not released spare parts for the Prius due to supply chain issues(all parts are being designated for new car production, not repair). I'm getting around it by using a reshipper to buy the parts in Japan and ship them to me in the US. Within a month, I hope to have the only gen5 Prius in North America with an OEM spare tire conversion, auto-folding side mirrors, turn indicators in the side mirrors, and a couple interior lighting upgrades.

I got a set from the wrecker, jack, tire iron, 5 lugcentric nuts the styrofoam and the donut. All this talk about ruining the car due to a smaller spare tire.... total BS. If you drive on a donut spare, you should be driving low speeds, to a turw shop, a dealer or home. Whatever is close. The piece you missed is there is a foam piece that sits under the tire as well, so its not squeeking rubbing on the car body. Mine is a prime and has no awd bits in the way. Havent fit it all yet but hoping it works. I do like the suggestion to get a proper sized donut installed on the prius v rim, im looking into that as well. Great idea. Cheers

@barrygolub2552 also do I. The spare fits the car, the jack works on the car as do the lugs. There is no where to store the tire on the prime in the hatch like the non plug in. So if you want to bring a road trip spare it has to sit with your gear in the hatch. The jack and tire iron have spots in the factory foam though. Kind of a bad design really overall but on a long road trip I prefer to have a spare tire

Thank you so much!!! Just bought a 2023 Prius XLE--love it but was so confused on whether or not it had a spare or if you could even carry a spare. I have a 2012 Prius V I'm giving to a family member and want him to have that spare. I think the Prius V spare wouldn't be a great idea for the XLE because they are the run flat tires--the LE has regular tires. I'm probably going to investigate how much an OEM spare tire from Toyota would cost. If anyone knows, that would be great. The Toyota mechanic when I picked up my car said I "could" use the Prius V tire (Compact spare tire, Prius V: Size T135/70D17 102M) but probably best to get the correct tire. Does anyone know the spare tire size? The inside of the driver's side door says "SPARE--NONE."

I just got my 2023 Prius LE and the Prius V Spare has two options so be careful to get the 114.3 lug pattern! My styrofoam pieces are not as thick as the video and look different and the spare raises my removable floor 1" and it also pushes the rear plastic back to even get it down and close to working :( I've tried three different Prius V spares with same results and will be picking up my used spare in a few weeks so hopefully it fits better but not counting on it and will have to always have a raised rear floor? I'll then try the lug nuts to see if they fit as I just noticed comment below as I was never allowed to mount the spare on my car. Just see if the lug pattern fit.
@gulliverb
@gulliverb Жыл бұрын
Ditto here. I got my LE and the Prius V spare I tried is definitely too big. I thought about maybe storing it deflated and keeping a little 12V compressor in the car, but even so it seems like the wheel is too thick, and like you said the 17" tire pushes the rear plastic. Altogether a lousy situation. I seem to remember reading somewhere that these would use a 16" spare, which would obviously leave you limping with the other three being 17", but okay in a pinch for limited speed and miles. If anybody can see a solution to this problem, I hope you'll post it here. I had high hopes after watching this video but it looks like it's not applicable to the 2023 LE.

@@gulliverb I got a Prius V spare, which is like 115 mm lug pattern 17 inch tire and it fit in but you had to smash the rear plastic back towards the bumper to get it to lay flat as possible and it was still about an inch and a half above the existing floor so I added some Styrofoam in and all my other goodies underneath that, and then build up some Styrofoam to carry the weight up towards the seats and then I put the carpeted cardboard piece in and then the all weather mat in and it’s gonna work out great but it did raise the floor about an inch and a half but I did try the tire on the front and rear and the Lugnuts work and everything works great but just a crazy design that Toyota doesn’t have that as an option and it seems like they must’ve lowered the floor a little to get more cargo space from the original video that was posted on KZbin. The only other thing that I was frustrated with is on the LE there is no touch keyless entry on the passenger side so you have to get the key fob out of your pocket which seems antiquated after I’ve used my 2011 with 346,000 miles on currently and still going and I’m in and out of the door often.

@@JohnKreider-i9k From the KZbin videos, as you mentioned, the LE FWD trim cargo floorboard sits 1-1.5" lower than XLE or Limited trim for more cargo space, but I was not aware the foam inserts in LE is thinner than XLE and Limited. This indicates the cargo bare metal for all the three FWD trims are at the same height from pavement... However this brings another question unanswered and that is based on some videos the reviewers declared that a compact spare tire is an option only for LE trim. But based n your post a compact spare does Not fit properly!? As for me, I got the 23 Limited trim which has a raised floorboard and based on my measurement a compact spare would fit. I further plan to cut the foam inserts with a hot wire gun to fit around the spare once I get it.
