We have a new 2023 Lexus 350h (since June). We’re long-time Lexus owners and fans and have never had a single complaint about the 4 we’ve owned. The new RX engine sounds like a lawnmower when accelerating. In the 2010 RX, which we still own, and 3 previous Lexus cars, acceleration is practically silent. I’ve never felt I wouldn’t have enough power to go up a grade since I sold my ‘84 Corolla. Now, I’m pretty sure long-haul truckers will be passing us on the uphill grade from Phoenix to Flagstaff. I haven’t tried it on a steep grade yet, but that’s my prediction, and since we bought it for road trips, we’re pretty disappointed. If we had been able to test drive one, we might not have bought it. Even accelerating at a sedate rate from 15-40mph or so, you can hear it working it’s puny little heart out. We’re already starting to look at other brands, after 2 decades of only buying Lexus, and decades of Toyotas before that. We didn’t even consider buying a car from a different manufacturer, waited about 5 months for this car, and have only had it since June, but we may trade it in soon. This would be a sad waste of money, and a loss of some very good customers for Lexus. And another thing. Do not get ceramic coating. It’s billed as something to cut down on maintenance, but it turns out you can only hand wash it, and it turns a durable SUV into a delicate porcelain figurine that must be hand-washed twice-monthly (recommended). My 14-yr old white Lexus parked right next to it looks exactly as beautiful and shiny with just the naked 14-yr old paint it was born with. They say you have to use brushless, or touch-less car washes, but after months of internet searches and forums, I’ve come to the conclusion they don’t exist in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. Not even the Lexus dealer has one, and they will not offer car washes if they have to do it by hand, except when you bring it in for service.. So if you, like me thought your days of handwashing your own were over, do not get ceramic coating.

I am 100% with you, and have an almost identical experience in owning one of these new 4-cylinder Lexus hybrids. And like you, it is why I ended up trading my 23 NX350h for my new GX after only about six months. Both the NX and RX hybrids are in such high demand, though, so I would trade ASAP as we only lost maybe $1-2K by trading it. Once more inventory hits the market, resale will fall as there will be more supply. Also, the 2023 model year is almost over so come next year your 23 will be a year old so again, trade it soon if you want to. I have zero regrets about getting rid of ours. I also never buy a car without test driving, and I guess this is a good lesson for the future. As for ceramic coating, if yours was done by the dealer, chances are it’s a really low quality job. That stuff (along with their paint protection coating) is really just snake oil to build in profit for the dealer. A good ceramic coating installed by a skilled detailer is totally different and I highly recommend it. But we always only hand wash our car so I guess that’s less of a concern for us.

@@joshjamescars A Toyota dealer in the NY area is charging $3,000 extra for a ceramic coating “package” on a Prius! You can’t make this up! Ceramic coatings wear off and need to be re-applied. Also, I’m told a scratch cannot be polished out of ceramic coating-The coating would need to be removed and re-applied after the scratch is polished out.

I have a '23 350h and I absolutely love it. I agree that the engine does get buzzy and loud when you step on the gas but ride quality and value for money is solid (cheaper compared to rivals, great gas economy and reliable). I love the looks and especially the new infotainment system which is a huge upgrade over the trackpad, so the V6 is a sacrifice I am willing to make. The Interior does look stale but feels nice so I don't mind it.

Totally agree. I don’t know why all the other reviewers seem to make this a non issue. Was recently in a brand new sienna in stop and go traffic and the constant droning of the engine gave me a headache. Can’t imagine the same drivetrain in the RX. It was a downgrade to my parents prior 2010 RX.
@joshjamescars

The Sienna is also way underpowered for such a large car that’s designed to haul 7-8 people and all their stuff. I drove one of the new hybrid-only Siennas as a loaner a couple years ago and thought it was underpowered with two people in the car LOL.

I've had SEVEN Lexus RXs over the years, starting with the very first 1999 RX 300, including an RX 400h hybrid, an RX 450h hybrid, and my most recent, a 2020 RX 350 F-Sport. I really loved the 2020; the F-Sport had the electronic suspension and handled amazing well for a vehicle of that size and height. Sport mode stiffened up the suspension but actually made it do much better over bumps and was a better ride. I almost always put it into sport mode when getting in. Those earlier hybrids actually were a bit quicker than the non-hybrid versions, and you definitely could feel the extra, immediate torque when you stepped on it. Actually, the earlier 400h was more so, and the 450h somewhat less so as they tried to make it “smoother” and more for mileage than anything else. I'd driven earlier NXs as loaners and hated them. Incredibly cheap and uncomfortable inside. I drove a brand new (literally hadn’t even had gas put in it - still had the little bit from the factory) 2023 NX for three weeks and it was MUCH better (I think it was the turbo). Loaner for three weeks while they fixed the amplifier in my RX. Yeah, it had that whiny hamster wheel engine but it was at least tolerable in the NX. And far more comfortable than earlier versions. But really a dog unless you floored it. For me, it was never an option because it is just too small for the tools and stuff I sometimes carry as a computer consultant. My 2020 RX lease was up and there was just no way I was going to get the hamster wheel engine in a new RX except for MAYBE a 500h, but they were just absurdly expensive; nobody should be paying well over a grand a month for a LEASED RX. I extended my lease just to wait for the market to change a bit and wound up getting an all-electric RZ a few weeks ago. Lots stupid with it (like the range, or should I say, lack thereof), but I rarely go that far and have chargers at home in our building. Lexus is following Tesla's “single screen” trend which I really don’t like, but then, so are a lot of other manufacturers. Stupid having to press several “buttons” on the screen, looking away from driving, just to change drive modes. I also notice that Lexus has been getting cheap with materials lately. The RZ supposedly uses “sustainable” materials but I'm not sure how an obviously fake “wood” plastic center console is sustainable or eco-friendly. But with the silent, very torquey electric motors, it is more like the RX of old with the V6. But quicker. Were I not to have gotten an insane deal on the RZ (Luxury trim, BTW - I MUST have the Mark Levinson) which included their $10K lease cash, a sizable equity in my 2020 RX trade (lease return), and a large ($6K) dealer discount, I probably would have either bought out my 2020 RX at the end of the lease extension, or more likely, gone elsewhere. Lexus has definitely lost their way, looking at numbers rather than being the thing that made them what they are.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Congrats on the new RZ! That’s a really fascinating car. It would be on my list if I was ready to go all-electric. And it sounds like you got a heck of a deal on it, which I’m glad you did as I don’t think it’s worth full asking price. As for the RX500h, I completely agree. A $75K RX is, like you said, absurd. And even for people like myself who don’t lease, I couldn’t imagine paying $75K out of pocket for an RX. I paid $10K less than that for my new GX. And yes, sadly I completely agree about interior materials and them hiding behind “eco friendly” I think they do use less plastic but they do so by making all the plastic pieces thinner and less solid than they used to. In any case, enjoy the new RZ!

Although I don’t regret my 2024 RX 350h purchase, all of your points are spot on Josh and it is truly disappointing that Lexus decided to “downgrade” their product line by eliminating what made Lexus products special, unique and caused the legacy luxury brands in the 90’s to the 2000’s to seriously step up their game with the new (back then) Lexus competition. I feel like now that Lexus has “hooked” us as buyers they’ve decided to, in a way, pull the rug out from under us essentially giving us a Toyota equivalent product with a Lexus badge and that’s the only difference we are paying for. Frustrating, sad to see and experience this as a long time Lexus and sometimes Toyota buyer. Thank you for highlighting these issues in such a helpful and well rounded way and please continue to bring your valuable perspective to all of your faithful viewers! 😊

Fantastic! And yes, you’re spot on. Definitely agree on the engine noise from the 4-cylinder but would gladly take the 87 gas requirement and the 36mpg combined over the V6. Plus, the 2023 redesigned infotainment is miles better than the old V6 models.

The V6 actually was fine using 87 too, per the manual. And I totally agree about the efficiency, having now owned both the NX and my new GX, I actually prefer the older infotainment system. We looked at the RX 350h but opted for the NX 350h. While the NX is smaller (not by much) it is more practical around town and on the highway. The 4 cylinder on the NX whines but it is less noticeable to us. At this point we have no idea when it will be delivered. Good review!

Have you gotten to sit in the NX? The only reason I ask is because it actually is a good deal smaller, especially the back seat and cargo area. As for the new GX, if you like the GX and are thinking about buying one, I’d highly recommend buying the current one, then waiting a couple years on the new one. The 3.5 turbo that’s in the GX has had some issues in the new Tundra and Sequoia (wastegate, etc.) and I’d give it a year or two for them to get all the kinks worked out. @sulehk Yes! The 500h is absolutely not worth the money in my book. I remember when a nicely optioned RX was $50K not $70K like that one is. Same with the PHEV. Great car, but the hell if I’m paying $75K for an RX.

Bottom line- I own this car; I am getting 40 miles a gallon after 500 miles (admittedly a small sample size) doing mixed highway/local driving which is the primary reason I bought this car over Mercedes, BMW and Audi. And perhaps like me you saw, when you were out there buying, the creep of the price of non- luxury vehicles (name your manufacturer) up toward what I actually paid for the vehicle in NJ. Unbelievable really what is gong on in the auto industry. As for V6 versus the 4, I already have a GMC Acadia so it was not that big a deal for me. Pluses for this car are the comfort level ( I am 6:3 and have plenty of room in driver position), infotainment system, aforementioned gas mileage, general low need repair reputation of Toyota/Lexus and the projected resale value (I sell about every 4 years). Finally, I have not seen a car reviewed up here on KZbin that did not have some knock against it and believe me I looked at tons of reviews before buying. No car is perfect including this one as noted in the video but this vehicle has a lot going for it unless you are an absolute V6 aficionado and can not do without.

I think you hit the nail on the head here, that Lexus prices are far lower than the Germans and not much more than a Highlander, for example. But I think that’s the problem with Lexus is they’re transitioning to making semi-premium cars and not true luxury cars now to keep prices lower than other luxury brands which is my big problem as I’ve always bought Lexus for ultra smooth abs quiet luxury and the best materials, and I’d go to Toyota for a cheap hybrid for fuel efficiency. But you’re also spot on that the RX350h is in a class of its own In that space for efficiency!

@@joshjamescars Yes Josh, you are probably right about the current Lexus approach. I certainly defer to you on the quality of materials issue versus previous Lexus cars. That being said, everyone who has come into this car has commented positively able the fit and finish and beauty of the interior so I am guessing the opulence factor is high enough for most people. The only other vehicles that I saw in person that I thought interior design-wise were in the ball park as nice as the RX were the Mercedes GLB and GLC class cars. Was not really impressed at all with the comparable Audi and BMWs as their interior designs, in particular, seemed kind of dated. Again, the final draw for me was getting a hybrid and it seems to be working out well. In fact I am getting a bit over the posted MPG. Best and thanks for reaching out.

It's just an upgraded Highlander with essentially the same drivetrain, (Prove me wrong) unless it has two electric motors, which I believe only comes in the RX500h. And, it ain't cheap. The one I tried to get for five months was around $72,500 MSRP, which seven dealers could not obtain. And I started last December trying to get one. As you know, you can't order what you want, you just get on a list ($2,000 refundable deposit required, except at Sewell Lexus Fort Worth) and wait. And, most of those dealers told me it would be a 9 to 12 mos. wait with no guarantee what I would get (First come, first served). Ridiculous, since they are assembled in Ontario, Canada.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Totally agreed at it being an upgraded highlander with the same drivetrain. But that’s always what it has been. All RX hybrids have 3 electric motors (MG1 and MG2, and MG Rear for the AWD system). The 500h has the electric motor sandwiched between the engine and transmission and it’s a different architecture being used differently for max power versus max efficiency. Also, if the $72,500 was being quoted on a 350h, something is wrong there. I was only able to build one out to $63K (not including TTL, etc.). There’s no way I’d pay $72K for an RX. I know the 500h can go that high but there’s no way I would spend $72K on a 4-cylinder RX.

(EDIT) I typed my comment below before watching your video...LOL. I won't edit or delete it, because I was under the impression, you bought the car. This choice would have been an easy guess, but because of your video where you had a RX loaner and had a few negatives to say of the new 2023 RX comparing it to older Lexus' with a certain type of engine, naturally, I would not have thought you wanted this specific model. When I was searching for a car back in May 2023, the 2023 RX 350 was one of the top consideration. A few reasons why I didn't buy it is because, it wouldn't be garaged, and it would be parked at the airport outside for days on due to my travel for work. I didn't want to spend $65000 on a car just for it to get thrashed by the heat and plane fumes. Lastly, my recent experience servicing my GS350 where I spent $9300 in one year getting it fixed (it was a 2007 I kept for 15 yrs). The cost of service is expensive at :a Lexus Dealership, as I don't know a local trustworthy mechanic. I didn't want to spend a lot on service as my Lexus service advisor told me that it would cost even more on maintenance compared to my GS350. I love your new RX350h. Its beautiful. Enjoy it. Subscribe and stay tuned, video coming up on the new GX next Thursday! :) But ride-wise, it’s on par with the old V8 LS sedans. It’s far smoother and quieter than any RX, which is mainly a result of the beautiful V8. The biggest downsides are of course efficiency and a more truck-like ride though I will say I was surprised at how composed the ride is versus earlier versions of this GX. awesome vid Josh and love all your other Toyota/Lexus reviews. I unfortunately have to agree w/ your assessments here despite liking the car. I took delivery of my RX350h last month and have put about a thousand miles on it. Indeed nice, interior great, rides fine except that noise levels are very noticeable when accelerating on highway. Same for when passing someone. Once the car reaches its speed, it becomes 'quiet' again, but claiming a hill really makes the car scream. Toyota really should have kept the V6. I'd be more than willing to sacrifice 3-4 MPGs to get the more refined engine. What also bothers me is that the higher trims only come with the 21 inch wheels. I think the standard 19s suit this car better. Overall, I'm still happy. I got a really good deal and driving below 80 mph is pleasant. I hate the default beeps. I'm in Europe and the laws here force manufactures to reset "mute" settings so I have to go to the menu each time I start the car and turn off a bunch of things. question: My car always saves about 4 gallons / 15l of gas in reserve. I pump when the car shows 10 miles left and max I can do is 13ish gallons. I've seen other owners in various forum say they notice the same in their 350h. Any idea why Lexus sets this threashold? What's the point of advertising 17.7 gallons when usable is only 13.7 or so
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 5 ай бұрын
Hello! I fully agree with your sentiment here toward the RX350h. It’s a great car under light acceleration. And I also share the same frustration that the higher trims only come with the big wheels. Since doing this video I got to drive an RX with the smaller wheels and it made a big difference. As for your question about the fuel tank, that’s actually typical for Toyota. They usually hold about 3-4 gallons in reserve and they do that because they know some idiot out there is going to drive it until the fuel gauge reaches zero. And so for that situation, there are a few gallons of gas left in the car to make sure you can get to the next petrol station. The funny thing is in hybrids that are so efficient, you could theoretically go another 150-200 kilometers (assuming 3-4 gallons in reserve and the car consuming 50km/gallon). But rest assured that behavior is normal and should you ever forget to fill up and hit zero, you’ll have some in reserve! My GX is the same way, it has a 23 gallon fuel tank and I only ever fill up 18. Same with the NX hybrid I owned. I think it had a 14 gallon tank and it would only ever take 12.

I fully agree with your conclusion. As an owner of 22 NXH I should say Lexus has lost it’s Lexusness in its new generation models. The quality of the fake leather seats, door trims even sound of closing doors all more Toyota like rather than a Lexus of the past at least in my copy. I don’t know about other models but here in Canada the NX is built on the same production line as the RAV4 whereas In the past a worker that could touch a Lexus body should have passed many years of successful experience in Toyota lines. That’s how my car has a lot of gaps on the inside and outside panels also I hear multiple rattles from the interior. As you mentioned Lexus customers deserve better product. Check out my 6-month in review, I also had all kinds of rattles and misaligned panels. Which is surprising because Ontario has always made the RX from day one and the past RXs have been so good for so many years… I will also add that we hardly lost any money flipping it because the NX hybrid is in such high demand so if you do want to get out of it, now is the time. Hey Josh, we are currently very strongly interested in buying the new Rx350h, however I do feel a bit concerned about the issues you mentioned. I do agree that the interior doesn't feel like a true luxury car, and we did a test drive and noticed the sound of the v4 engine. However we did love how comfortable the car was to sit in (amazing seats) and the new tech features like safety, self park, digital rear view mirror etc. Do note that this is going to be our first luxury car and we are going to upgrade from a 10 year old regular car. Compared to our current car, it did ofcourse feel much more luxurious, smoother and refined to drive. Also a big factor for us to consider this over German competition is Lexus reliability. The main users of the car would be my parents in their late 50s, whose main priorities for a car are safety and comfort. Based on this, would you recommend us to go for this or is there an alternative that you would recommend?
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 8 ай бұрын
Hello! Great question! I think given your use and the fact that you’re coming from an older mainstream car, you’d be very happy with it. The thing that gives me pause is the price. Carstoday are astronomically expensive but with the RX specifically I hate the idea of paying luxury car money for something that isn’t truly a luxury car. I’d rather have a really nice Toyota for $55K-$60K. The alternative I’d recommend you Google is the Toyota Crown Signia. It’s basically the Toyota version of this RX and will share the same powertrain. I think the interior of that actually looks far nicer than the RX and since the RX’s interior is marginal at best for a luxury car. Toyota hasn’t announced pricing or release date yet for the Crown Signia but it should be out within this calendar year and if I had to guess, I imagine it will be about $10K-$15K cheaper than the RX. The Crown Signia will also be made in Japan which is a huge plus in my book (all RXs for the US market have been made in Ontario and tend to have a lot of squeaks and rattles later in life due to the less stringent QC there versus a Japan plant). Hope this helps!

After the lease rebate the NX 450h+ is about the same price as a lower end RX350h. Just be aware that interest is baked into the lease so what you’ll want to do is buy it out immediately after the lease starts so you’ll actually realize as much of the rebate as possible. Also, I don’t actually think the RX is more refined or has better interior materials. That was absolutely the case with the last-gen RX but both the new NX and RX have the same lower grade interior, and so the only real difference between them is the size.

Lexus should have put a 3 liter or something bigger in the new RX that engine is just to small for that car. Also no turbo. The RX is a cursor not a race deamond..

Would be interesting to hear your opinion on the current Lexus ES. It also seems to be the last real Lexus sedan and will be replaced in mid 2024 with a new "modern" iteration with less attention to refinement and more plastic and digital nonsense. There we have the V6 and the I4 Atkinson hybrid. Because it is a sedan it can combine comfort and driving dynamics a little bit better and has a little less weight to be handled.

I love the ES. I got to drive a Premium grade as a loaner and the current V6 model is one I would NOT miss out on if you want a sedan. Even the Premium which I’m sure was less refined than a Luxury or Ultra Luxury was still SO quiet and SO smooth. I can’t even imagine how bank vault quiet the Ultra Luxury would be. The latest update to the ES is also to me the Goldilocks car right now because you get the new infotainment software from the NX and RX BUT you still have hard climate buttons. The only other two affordable cars with that perfect combination are the ES and the UX (the LS and LX do but for $100K). We’re actually in the process of deciding on whether we may want to pick up an ES before this generation is done. Now that we have the GX, we could in theory flip the 4Runner out for one. I don’t think I’d do a hybrid since the hybrid 4 will absolutely continue on to the next generation. The only downside is no AWD but even without it, I would highly recommend it.

Great review, I definitely hate that Lexus went from V6 to 4 cylinder. They could have went with smaller V6 and added a Turbo. I’m in the market for RX350 or Highlander or Grand Highlander but I definitely don’t want the cheap transmission CVT. If I get a 6 speed transmission it will cost more money. That’s basically how Toyota and Lexus agenda is they want you to pay $70,000-$75,000 for what you got before in a V6. I definitely will look at Acura or Mazda that offer V6. Keep up your good works!!

I’d also skip the CX90. It’s having A TON of problems at the moment. The MDX is great and you should also as the Infiniti QX60 to the list. That is probably the one I’d buy in the market right now. Proven Nissan VQ-series V6, 9-speed true automatic, and a REALLY nice interior.

First, my new car is the 2023 GX which I bought because the 2023 is the final year of the V8. This RX was a loaner vehicle that I got to drive for a day while the GX was having some accessories and tint installed. Second, I likewise would absolutely not buy this RX for exactly the same reason, and even the old V6 is no comparison to my GX’s V8.

But the BIG turn off was the turbo 4bangers they put in started from last year . I even brought a sound reader and it reached a whooping 56 , 57 db interior at the highest peak . I think it’s very similar, though considerably slower/less powerful on the road since they use exactly the same engine and hybrid system but the RX is bigger and heavier. Whether it’s worth the extra money I think comes down to whether or not you need the extra space and size in the RX. If not, I would pass because I absolutely do not care for how this RX350h drives. And if you do need the space, I might also test drive a loaded Highlander hybrid. The RX doesn’t feel special beyond the badge. To answer your second question, when it comes to Toyota and Lexus we always buy because it’s a pretty sure thing. When it comes to European luxury, on the other hand, we always lease. My last was a current-gen XC90 and I was so glad we leased as I was ready to give it back at the end of the lease term after it had racked up $14K in repair costs (all paid by Volvo).

I still run an old RX300 its insanely reliable but the v6 massively lacks torque I have no idea what Lexus were thinking?? Also there isn't enough gears to make it more economical, I have looked at later models but nothing has been a strong contender because they don't really offer all that much more than what I already have and I have no idea why they've gone the CVT route especially as Lexus probably make the best and most reliable automatic gearboxes in the world. I think if they had just built on the RX300 just made it better so kept the V6 with an automatic gearbox not CVT and then just made it better kept improving it, Improved suspension and handling performance, comfort and luxury then it would be an option today that I might seriously consider, they could have still built a hybrid and an electric option for those that are into that but unfortunately I don't think my next car will be a Lexus and that's a shame, this RX 300 of mine has been super reliable and cheap to run overall but its time has come and its long gone so I see it as a missed opportunity. The NX 350 F Sport is tempting but we don't get that here in the UK so we only get hybrids with the CVT gearbox...
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 11 ай бұрын
The newer V6 itself doesn’t lack torque (and the latest V6 was much more powerful and advanced than your RX300) but I did find in the last gen (non-hybrid) RX that the car was always in the wrong gear because it was trying to run as efficiently as possible so I’d be in 8th gear when I really wanted to be down in 6th gear. Also, I would do some research on the Toyota/Lexus eCVT before just writing it off as a CVT because it’s not a belt and pulley CVT but rather a single speed planetary style power-split gearset that is the same basic design that’s been in the Prius since around the same time as your RX300. It’s bulletproof reliable and allows for the incredible efficiency Toyota hybrids are known for.

How much of the move to a 4cyl is Lexus and how much is government mandate, for mpg and emissions ? I had that 4cyl in a 21' Rav4 with the 8spd trans and it was great. Plenty of passing power and near 40mpg highway. The Lexus is much heavier and probably needs the 6cyl.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 11 ай бұрын
I think there are a number of reasons for it. Part of it is the government CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) standards but another part of it is marketing. There’s nothing else in its class that can do the kind of mileage the RX hybrid can and people zero in on fuel economy when shopping for a new car… though it comes at a huge cost. And yes, the Rav is a much heavier and larger car than the Rav. My 23 NX hybrid had the same engine in it and it had good power as well, but the NX and RX shouldn’t share literally the same powertrain.

How does it compare to a Toyota Rav4 Hybrid (base) regarding cabin and wind noise? Is it worth the steep jump in price in your opinion?
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
Hello! Those are two REALLY different cars. The RX is nearly twice the price of a base Rav4 hybrid and much bigger. The Rav base is a stripped out no frills hybrid where the RX is a premium or near-luxury car. More context as to why you’re cross-shopping them would help. Such as if you can buy the Rav all in cash but would need to finance the difference on the RX I would say buy what you can in cash. But if you can afford to buy the RX in cash too, then maybe buy it? But again, HUGE difference in vehicle and price range here, the wind noise and cabin noise is the last thing I think you should be factoring into your decision at this point.

I (think) have/had your same thoughts, but I also think I am being worn down and may have to accept it 😞 I had a 2019 RX 350 lease and decided to trade it in for a sedan ES 350 AWD to keep costs down since I have been working from home since Covid. We also had a 2020 NX which the plan was to buy after the lease, but instead sold it to Carmax for a sweet deal. being down to 1 car helps financially and working from home is proving we can get away with only 1 car, but I can't stand this ES 350 and I want my RX back! I was disappointed when I heard Lexus is lowering their engine options across vehicles. But as I get closer to the end of my lease the more I want my RX back and being the way the car market is as a whole I don't think I want a used car and that is the only difference in my thinking. It will hurt my wallet but I am really thinking of the RX 500H. Your thought and opinion are greatly appreciated and I like your video's Thank you
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars Жыл бұрын
I think the RX500h is a great car but IMO is way too expensive for a front wheel drive turbo/hybrid 4. I can’t remember off the top of my head where they start but I know that loaded the way I would want one it would be well over $70K, so $75-80 once you’ve factored in tax, title, license and then tint and paint protection if you want that. And I just can’t see paying $10K more than I paid for my GX for an RX. Especially if you’re going to lease, it gets real expensive at the interest rates today (money factor in a lease). Now, you say your ES is AWD but that would make it a 250 not a 350, which means it has the base Camry 4-cylinder and I can see wanting to get out of that. What I might advise you do is look into an almost-new CPO 2022 RX, it sounds like that would really be your best bet and maybe cheaper than a 500h. I think it would be worth going used to get the last V6 RX which feels so much better IMO. Or, if you think you could deal with a GX, I really don’t think you can go wrong with them right now while they still have the beautiful and ultra smooth 4.6L V8.

I think it depends what you need and want because they’re so different. The RX non-hybrid is bigger, slightly more premium, better power and nicer power delivery, but far less efficient. I would decide how important efficiency is for you FIRST (so choosing hybrid vs turbo) and only after that decide NX vs RX.

That’s actually not true. I think what you’re thinking about are CAFE standards which is corporate average fuel economy. Meaning, Toyota’s range as a whole has to average out above a certain number and that number goes up over the years. However, the loophole is that companies (like Toyota) who are far above the requirement can sell credits to companies who couldn’t otherwise meet it (like Subaru or Mazda, for example who don’t have hybrids). That said, I think it’s great that we’re pushing for a greener future I just feel like if Lexus is going to put a four cylinder hybrid in the RX, they need to give it more power with much bigger electric motors and or a plug in hybrid drive system to make up for the lack of power.

One thinks by downgrading to a 4 cylinder and turbocharging, moving away from the silky smooth and quiet V6 which they had, they have lost the plot and their mission. This isn't Lexus this is Toyota reacting to the need to be hybrid and downsizing the engine to be just like the Europeans and the turbocharging. The refinement is gone, the simplicity is gone next we will have to question how reliable these complications are. Toyota Lexus should stick to their mission, hold their ground, keep the 6 and develop more EVs either lithium, hydrogen fuel cell, hydrogen gas, they are big and they can afford to do this. This is a brand I totally respect. It ascended after my parents' generation and the Japanese proved themselves. Even Mazda a much smaller company from Hiroshima, Japan has upgraded to a 6 for their flagship saloon. This is not the time to overreact, be defensive and follow the crowd. I'm Malaysian Asian American and I live in both Asia and the United States and I can see how the Japanese are being caught by the EV revolution. They should be steady and hold their ground. Especially if you’re going to be in a lease term for 48 months, that’s basically a loan term that you could own the vehicle at the end of rather than having to give it back at the end of a lease and having nothing to show for the money you’ve spent. It’s also hard to say because my decision on the above would depend on what the buyout/residual is on them at the end of the lease terms.

My hope is that powertrain gets added to the Grand Highlander at some point so we won’t have to spend Lexus money on the TX to get it. But… I’m not holding my breath on that. So sad to see they got rid off V6, I am a Lexus fan for years but this is deal breaker for me, I will never buy turbo Lexus, for now I would buy 2023 GX460 before it is gone, or wait for TX550H, the only V6 you can buy in the future, so sad to say my next choice will be MDX.

Completely agreed with you! It’s funny you mention those two as I was going to wait for the TX550h+ Just for that engine but decided to cancel my reservation on it and buy the new GX and I Could not be happier with it!
