Agree with you 100% Josh. Between the turbo lag, harshness of the hybrid CVT, and poor choice of interior materials, this is not the same old RX we all knew from Lexus. There is no luxury or refinement here. Same issues are even more pronounced in the TX. Lexus cut a lot of costs, but raised prices and needs calling out. Not enough KZbinr car reviewers are holding Lexus/Toyota to task. Appreciate what you posted.

I feel Lexus cuts so much corners just to make more cheaper cars, raises price at the same time😂 I really appreciate your video!

These new RXs feel very mass produced without that care and attention to detail. At a higher price no less! Thank you for coming back and watching!!

Hi Josh, love your videos. I have a 350h and with the instant response of the electric motor , I find it's plenty for me. (Electric motor instant assist vs turbo lag you mentioned.) When I bought my car in early 2023, the 350h and 350 were the same price and mostly @ MSRP. With that and the 1/3 better MPG I would still go with the 350h a year ago. Fast forward to 2024 and you will find much better deals on the 350 gas only, up to 8-10% off MSRP so that voids the gas savings of the 350h. I wanted the smaller 19" wheels but found it impossible to find a premium plus model that had them. I think the 21's are more attractive but agree the 19's would probably ride softer.
@joshjamescars8 ай бұрын
Hi Jim! I think the 350h is a great choice for anyone who has efficiency as their top priority! And like you say, the instant electric assist is MUCH more enjoyable than the lag from this turbo/8-speed setup in city driving. And that’s very interesting to hear about the street prices of the hybrid versus the turbo. I think both are still very popular in my market so I haven’t seen the discounts you’re seeing but I’m glad to hear that discounts are coming back! As others have said, if you do end up wanting the smaller wheels you can find them readily available on eBay as new car takeoffs that you could then swap onto your car. Cheers!

I had a 2023 RX350 and sold it for a 23 GX. There's a lot of cost cutting on the new RX. A lot people praise the new interior but it's only surface level first glance. Door handle area has hard touch plastic and then cheap rubbery material on inside. The previous gen much more unique center console, with real buttons and the analog clock. They saved a lot of money by tacking on the giant screen, no craftsmanship necessary. The turbo engine is responsive but I'd rather have the V6. The GX is also noticeably better made with no rattles even though it's much larger, it's built super solid. Below 65, I actually think my GX is quieter.

Hi Josh 👋 I really enjoy your videos. I’m glad you mentioned smaller wheels / bigger tires! As much as I like the appearance of large wheels, low profile tires aren’t as comfortable on the road. But if I want a higher trim vehicle because I want say, HUD & 360 camera, the wheels also get bigger and voila…low or lower profile tires. I’m going to jump over to Mazda CX-5 as an example. I really like their top signature trim. But if I want the gorgeous midnight blue exterior paint with white interior, I think you get 17” wheels but I can’t get other bells & whistles 😅

I haven't driven the new turbo i4, but if there's 1-2 second delay that's really big, because when you need the power to avoid an accident - you usually can't wait 1-2 seconds for that it. I have thought about going back getting an older 450h (i believe that's the v6 hybrid), we have one with just the V6 and highlander with the old 3.3L V6 and hybrid and it feels way more nicer to drive with such smooth power delivery the engine never revs up. Not long ago someone just drove one over 1 million miles on the original drivetrain - likely because how easy the engine is worked with the electric assist and the PSD on that gen atleast is more reliable than the 5 and 6 speeds as well as extremely easy to change the fluid correctly without issue.
@joshjamescars8 ай бұрын
Yep! It’s a combination of the transmission fighting you to stay in top gear and the turbo lag/logic that creates that but it’s a noticeable delay. And yes, if you want a newer RX, I would absolutely go with a CPO 2022 RX450h.

I think Lexus knows they lowered the overall quality of the RX, and then they will boost it up again after the mid cycle refresh, just as they have done with the last generation. I remember sitting in a 2017 RX touching the dash panel left of the steering wheel and being shocked it was pure hard plastic. Then jumping in a 2020 refreshed model a few years later when I was waiting for service on my IS and realized they rectified that and changed it out to the soft touch injection molded stuff. It was a pleasant surprise to understand that Toyota does listen to consumer complaints and rectify things. They just take sometimes years to accomplish those adjustments. But they do it! Here’s to hoping that’ll be the case here bc I really want an RX but refuse to buy what currently feels like a top level Toyota than a true lexus.

Agree on your assessment Josh. In the end it’s asking a four cylinder to perform (or outperform) what a six cylinder engine can do. We used to have a 2001 C200 Kompressor and while that was a fun engine for a four pot, fuel mileage wasn’t all that great. Switching later on to the same model car, C240 with the V6 engine made a world of difference. Same output on bhp and torque but the feel was much smoother and effortless, definitely got lower fuel mileage considering it had a bigger displacement. I agree on the cost cutting too. That’s unacceptable from Lexus. Is the new 350 more expensive than the previous V6 350?
@joshjamescars8 ай бұрын
Yes! Exactly to all of this. Although I honestly don’t think the mileage is that much better than the V6 it used to have especially since the engine has to work way harder like you say. And yes, it’s considerably more expensive than the last generation with the V6.

Just drove the 2024 RX 350 and 350H with 21 inch wheels, I totally can support your preference for the 350. Thanks to the transmission power delivery was more satisfying but for reasons yet unknown handling was more compliant, would you or anyone out there know why this is the case. Thanks for another great edition of your reviews.
@joshjamescars2 ай бұрын
Yep! The hybrid is just dog slow because the drivetrain in there is identical to what’s in a Rav4 or Camry hybrid. Slightly larger electric motors but not enough for the size and weight of an RX. The old RX hybrid used to use the V6 hybrid which was perfectly suited to it. As for handling, there are a number of things both hardware and software that change between the 350h and 350 turbo that can make for tighter or more compliant drive. Suspension tuning, engine response, steering weighting, etc. and sometimes, more robust power like you get from the turbo can make it feel like it drives better as well.

Great review, Josh, lots of things to think about with the RX. I am looking to get out of a 2023 Lincoln corsair, due to fit and finish issues that have crept up and also a part replacement for the turbo engine at 13,000 miles-my confidence was lost. I am hesitant about the reliability of Audi, BMW, and Volvo, so Lexus is a natural alternative. But definitely some drawbacks to the current Gen RX. Finding the intersection of luxury, quietness, performance, and reliability in 2024 is a daunting task.
@joshjamescars9 күн бұрын
Lexus is probably going to be your best bet if reliability is your biggest concern. That said, the RX is a class up in size from the Corsair and considerably bigger, so what you might look at is an NX. I actually find that the engines that Lexus is using are far better suited to smaller, compact vehicles like the NX. They’re too small for the size and weight of the RX. You won’t really get true luxury or performance with NX or RX, however, so you’re going to have to weigh whether you value reliability and low cost of long term ownership or performance and luxury. Simply put you just won’t find them all in one vehicle today.

Thanks for your reply! Agree with you. Maybe sweet spot is either purchasing a Lexus, or leasing a German car so I don't take on long term costs/outside of warranty. You’re right my Corsair is smaller than RX. I think it’s a bit too small. problem is I love the looks of the Corsair and my emotional attachment to the Lincoln brand since I was a kid. If I hadn't had the turbo repair at 13k miles and fit /finish was better, I’d be a happy camper. I did NOT want to be thinking about a new car 15 months later but here I am.

I test drove a Luxury non-hybrid trim lately, and yea, I heard little-to-no road noise. Not sure if it's different glass being used or if the wheels are actually built to help reduce noise (according to the sales associate), but definitely didn't hear anything. However, I was not able to take it on the highway. Fastest speed I could go was 45MPH.
@joshjamescars4 ай бұрын
From my drive experience, 45mph isn’t enough to hear anything, at that speed it is actually very refined. It’s on harsh pavement and concrete highways at 65+ that it becomes less refined. Same with the TX. Around town it’s perfectly fine. But on the highway there’s definitely more intrusion.

One way to look at it: You get what you pay for in the RX350 gas, especially when the average price of a car sold in the US today is $ 47 K. Which is why I paid for the RX450h+ :)
@joshjamescars8 ай бұрын
Yes! I totally agree with that as well. It’s insane how expensive cars are now, and the RX PHEV is great! Shares the same powertrain with my RAV4 Prime and it’s a fantastic drivetrain.
@PhilT9936 ай бұрын
Based on the issues that you have pointed out, this is not a car that I would be interested in. The added electric motors in the 500h, I believe, eliminate the turbo lag by providing instant torque. Not sure if the rod=ad noise will be better in the 500h. Top spec for the 500h here in Canada is $91,000 CDN which is really up there.
@joshjamescars6 ай бұрын
Take the 500h for a test drive before you commit to anything. Some folks feel like that powertrain needs some work. I don’t mind it, personally, but as you say, it’s really up there in price and will still have the low-rent interior. I think a fully loaded 500h here is $72K USD and that’s a fully loaded QX60 Autograph (which are usually discounted) or an MDX Type-S both of which have V6s, nicer interiors, and are way better to drive.

Currently i own a 2022 RX and I am extremely thankful and happy with it, to the point where if someone said I'll give you an even swap for the NEW RX , I would politely turn it down and remain with the 22'. Sounds like it needs a remap! I never understood why Toyota never experimented with the V6 as in reduced the capacity and turbo charged it, this way they get better torque better fuel economy better driving experience as the previous 3-3.5 V6 always lacked torque plus they retain that lovely V6 sound seems like an all round win but as you say probably too expensive to build a new engine from scratch given their more economical approach to building cars.
@joshjamescars2 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s all about standardization across the board. They did actually experiment with the V6; there used to have 8 different versions of the GR-V6. The second gen IS250 used to have a 2.5L 4GR-FE V6 which would have been a perfect candidate for a smaller V6 hybrid or turbo V6 to give it more power. But Toyota wanted to move to making as few individual engines as possible and so the same T24A turbo I4 is used in everything from the RX to Tacoma to Crown sedan.
@hipsilantro278 ай бұрын
if someone wants to be picky, old toyota would build the car around the engine. New toyota keeps the car and chooses an engine that is just enough to push that car and satisfy new emissions standards. Can be something that’s hard to live with if you were used to driving a thick gx built around a v8. what do you think?
@joshjamescars8 ай бұрын
Actually that’s not necessarily true. They did the same thing with the old cars. The 2GR V6 got dropped into everything including the Tacoma and Rav4, and at one point the same way the T25A is getting dropped into everything now. It’s just that, to your point, the engines that they have available to drop into their cars today are more efficient and less enjoyable than the old ones were. And there are pros and cons to each. I love my tank like GX but I also love my RAV4 Prime for all it does really well. Just depends on what one cares about.
@hipsilantro278 ай бұрын
Okay I see your point now, thanks for that. Pivoting from this point, however, isn’t it fair to think that aligning new engines to new standards will compromise durability and maintenance costs? Maybe not from a parts and service perspective, but from people wanting to hit the pedal and get the same feeling they got from their v6 RX (aside from the sound of course). I love your channel by the way, and your videos have helped shape my 23 yr old head into appreciating cars most people my age don’t. I think the 2022 RX is absolutely one to get if you can find a good, low mileage CPO (always have it inspected by a third party mechanic too, even if it’s CPO). Or, if you want to go new, the Acura MDX still has a V6, is VERY nice to drive, and I think looks MUCH better than the RX. The Infiniti QX60 would also be an option. Nissan’s VQ-series V6 is a proven motor just like Toyota’s GR-series V6 and and now that the QX60 has a proper 9 speed auto and not a CVT, I think that’s a really compelling package. The interior looks great too.

Turbo 4s can be very fun. I love them in BMWs. So how bad could they be in a Toyota product? I’d probably opt for the electrified turbo. Fuel economy isn’t great in the 350. In terms lag with accelerator, the question is how much of that is from the transmission vs turbo? 8 speed is a dog compared to 6 speed for instance.

It’s a mix of both. Sometimes it’s the 8 speed hanging out in too high a gear (for fuel efficiency), other times it’s the turbo not being protective. Sometimes it’s both at the same time.

The T24A isn’t technically a truck engine, it’s used in all their new passenger cars. However, the old GX460, LX570, and LS460 all used the same UR-series V8 that was originally designed for Toyota trucks and that’s why they ran so beautifully and reliably.

As for Toyota quality, while Koji Sato hasn’t done much, Akio Toyoda was actually at the helm when all these cars were being developed so you can thank him for that. He put a huge emphasis on hybrids and efficiency across the line (which was the right move, obviously), but that’s also why we lost all of the V6 and V8 cars too. I hold no grudge against 4 cyl engines, but this rough sound and laggy character is not worthy of a luxury vehicle. One reason car manufacturers are so keen to use smaller turbocharged engines is that they are simply cheaper to produce. I once read an academic cost breakdown analysis that pointed this out. The public is told they have to do that because of fuel efficiency and emissions, but that is only half true. Regarding the efficiency of smaller turbo engines, it really is there, but only under light to medium load. With more boost, the air/fuel mixture has to be enriched to keep exhaust temperature down. This is the reason Porsche is so proud with their "Lambda 1" engine in the new 911 GTS.

Toyota/Lexus are famous for their v6/v8 reliability, new turbo v4 should be take few years to be demonstrated their reliability as previous ones, don’t buy its now.

Yep, definitely agree!

Lack of a V6 is a deal breaker for me.

I don't know if its true but I heard the 2025 rx350 will bring back v6?
@joshjamescars8 ай бұрын
Nope. Toyota has firmly moved away from the older V6 and V8 cars in favor of their new turbo I4s which replace the old V6s and turbo V6s which replace the old V8s.

@@joshjamescarsIt'll be interesting to see how this stubborn commitment to turbo 4's exclusively works out for the world's largest car company. We own a 2012 RX and are in the process of trading for new. While my wife would love to just have a new stylish RX and not even bother looking at the competition, but I've ruled out the Lexus because of no V6 option. I think other consumers will as well. I don't understand why they can't just sell a base model with a 4 and luxury model with V6, I'd gladly pay up.

@jeffcobb331 Yep! I’m with you and it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. Personally I think I bought my last Lexus with my 2023 GX as I’m not interested in the twin turbo V6 drivetrain which has had problem after problem. And I agree, frankly with the way this new RX feels inside and drives you’re better off getting a nice Toyota Highlander or Crown Signia.

Does your engine have auto start? If it does turn it off not good for your engine anyway!!!
@joshjamescars8 ай бұрын
This engine does have it, it was turned off, and so that’s not causing any of the lag you see in the video. It’s even worse when that’s enabled!

Totally agree about the faux wood and front grill. Car overall is ugly.
@stuartstein80624 ай бұрын
You want real wood? Get a 2004 Lexus RX330 that's what I got still runs like a brand new car with $150,000 mi on it. Don't need that modern technology that breaks.

Honestly I’ve never seen the lack of innovation and creativity with Lexus and Toyota like today. Same platform and same cheaper interior across the board with new lexus and toyota cars. I mean they don’t even bother making new engines these days and only using the same 4cylinder engine in like 20 cars- toyota and lexus. And they’re more expensive than ever? Lol
@joshjamescars7 ай бұрын
Yes! Agreed. The same was true of the old GR-series V6s too, though there were 8 different versions of that engine. But yes, lack of innovation and creativity is spot on.

Grill looks odd, engine a disappointment, price way up. Looking at the genisis GV80.
@joshjamescars2 ай бұрын
Lease the GV80 if you do. It’s got a beautiful interior but Hyundai’s engines are known to only last about 100-150K and the depreciation on Genesis is appalling. Even worse than the Germans. You’ll lose less in a lease than if you buy outright and sell 3-5 years down the line.

Just know how much of a headache you’re in when it comes to maintenance and long term repair on one. 😂😅 I loved my XC90 but there was a reason I leased it.

Putting 20" wheels on their vehicles is the worst vanity ploy Toyota/Lexus has done... I have them on my older Venza and its the worst, most rigid ride ever...
@joshjamescars8 ай бұрын
Yep! Same, I had them on my NX and I didn’t miss them when I sold it!

4 cylinder but with Turbo therefore dont expect to have good fuel economy from it, but you get 275 horsepower hello
