At 228 mile range and 1 hour charge time, it doesn't make for a very practical off-roading car. As someone who enjoys driving on forest roads to remote hiking and camping spots out of Seattle, I really need a range closer to 300 miles, or the ability to recharge before heading into the mountains or just out of the mountains at a much faster rate like the EV6 or model Y. This would work great for everyday driving around town, but I just can't see myself practically taking this car on my adventures.
@slandshark2 жыл бұрын
I live near Seattle. Where exactly do you drive to find 'remote hiking and camping spots' that needs 300 miles of range (and what do you drive right now that gives that range)? East of Ellensburg or something? From Seattle you can get to pretty much all of the mountain passes, camping spots, and forest roads within 60 to 100 miles or so. The Olympics are about 100 miles out. Snoqualmie Pass is 50 miles. Leavenworth is 115 miles. Crystal Mountain is about 85 miles. Mt Rainer is 90 miles. I'm guessing you must be talking about driving from Seattle to eastern Washington. Heck you can get to Yakima from Seattle in only 142 miles. Ellensburg has great charging stations for that trip.
@gregvogel98592 жыл бұрын
snoqualmie pass, leavenworth, crystal etc are not remote. I also live in north Seattle so add 10 miles except for Leavenworth. But here are some examples. Tacoma Pass (100 Miles), Mineral Creek Trailhead/north end of the needles (120 miles), Teanaways (~117 miles depending on trail head) just to name a few of my favorites. Additionally for optimal battery performance you ideally don't want to operate your below 10% or above 80% giving you 70% of effective range or roughly 160 miles in the case of the soltera. Again, not a huge deal if you had a faster recharge, but having to plug in around north bend for half an hour to an hour to get the final charge to get home is problematic for me.

Subaru means off-roading travels in the woods (hence Forester/Outback Wilderness models and the high ground clearance). With 200 mile range I can't even get to Sequoia from here 213 miles away by car from here in Pasadena to there, and I don't trust that range. Meanwhile my 2020 Subaru Forester averages 450 miles on a full tank. Should we accept half the throughput with BZ4X/Solterra. I have read that Subaru will provide 11kwh AC from October 2022. More: 4WD will only support 100kwh DC while BZ4X 2WD with another battery manufacturer 150kwh DC. Strange. Anyways: The Subaru will have the best quality reputation and 220 miles should be more than sufficient for 95% of the customers. @colechapman69762 жыл бұрын
@Kevin K I think they charge that much because of fuel savings that you can achieve with the Solterra. These are two different vehicles. One being gas, the other being electric. The electric vehicle gives you 105ish mpg, while the Impreza gives you 30ish mpg. The Soltera does start at 45k, but the fed gives you 7k for buying it. So it's realistically 38k starting price for an EV that gets 105 mpg. Now it's starting to look pretty good. The Solterra also gives you more space. The Impreza is 176.2 inches long. The Solterra is 184.6 inches long. The Solterra is 73.2 inches wide, and the Impreza is 70 inches wide. Furthermore, the Solterra also offers more ground clearance. The difference is the Soltera is 8.3 inches while the Impreza is 5.1. The engine on the Soltera is bigger too. The Solteras horsepower figure is 215. The Impreza horsepower figure is 152. I think that the extra 20-ish price tag on the Solterra is justified since it's faster, bigger, and more fuel-efficient. It's more comparable to the Forester than the Impreza.

It was great that our reviewer did tell right up the bat the differences between the Solterra and the bZ4x, but they're still NOT ENOUGH to really differentiate between them. Worse, the use of a smaller infotainment screen on the lower level, which you can have standard on any bZ4x, even the FWD ones. Another deceiving issue is the lack of extra ground clearance (0.2" / 5mm is not enough) considering how Subaru has been selling all their crossovers from Crosstrek to Ascent on their "slightly better off road capability". Even the FWD bZ4x has the same 8.3" / 211mm of the AWD versions. The regular Forester, Outback and Ascent have 8.7" / 221mm, so the Toyota (even the FWD's) went to the Subaru's league. The ONLY issue that may sway someone into buying a Solterra is the INCENTIVE AVAILABILITY if the customer can benefit from those. Toyota will only have U$3750 in US Federal Credits at the start of the bZ4x delivery and will even fall into 0 in future months, while the Solterra will retain their U$7500 for at least a year, much likely much more. This credit will more than pay for the price difference between the FWD bZ4x and the AWD-only Solterra (counting that the dealer may not be "hunting wabbits"). Another problem on Subaru's side is that while the bZ4x is EXACTLY what people expected from a Toyota this Solterra is BELOW what people expect from a Subaru, particularly the way their management have tried to sell the brand as "more upscale than mainstream", which this Solterra is NOT. Even the bZ4x, compared to a similarly sized Rav4, needs ~ +30hp from their electric motor to just match the base Rav4 performance (battery pack is the culprit, as it + ~ 800lb. over an ICE equivalent) the AWD bZ4X and all the Solterras need + 5-10hp from their electric motorS to compensate for the + 200lb. of the AWD system. Before Toyota keeps making another JV car or truck look of how Hyundai and Kia try to differentiate themselves, even using most of the same components (they do a better job, IMHO). PS: Figure that this is a pure BS review done from Manufacturer-provided roads; I'd ♥to see this reviewer climb THAT HILL on 5:52 rather than what he'd shown... 😞😞😞 (wait until Sarah N Tuned or TFL get their hands on one)

Back in my day charging my transportation involved feeding the horses. They even require sleep, if you want to complain about slow charge times. Get out of here

Can't consider an electric car without a frunk. When other electric cars offer it, not having it makes you look not as good.

Ground clearance, standard AWD and a Lower Price (for awd). People need to quit gate keeping electric vehicles and acting like they are Jesus among men with their opinions, people love Subarus and maybe they have been waiting for an EV offering and don’t need massive range or super fast charging. I personally have an Ariya on order, but I sure hope all the new EVs hitting the market get more people into them and makes people with this dumb idea that you have to “buy the best” for whatever contrived reason you have in mind slowly fade away into the background so we can quit listening to elitist bs. Whoever gets this, the BZ4X, leaf, bolt, mini electric, etc all enjoy them and love how they handle and drive

@@Wasssup3232 you have a point. But "range" and "fast charging" are two crucial factors for EVs. It's no longer the taste of the consumer, but the practicality of the product.

I agree there is absolutely no reason to buy one of these cars. They have nothing going for them, and the Koreans beat them in every way. The only reason I could see people buying these is if they are brand loyal to those companies. Honestly, for their first EVs, there not that bad, but hopefully they will refine there upcoming ones

@@mstfici2685 But for who this car is for it wont be an issue, Subarus for the most part are 100% mall hoppers where charging will be done at home or when they go to Trader Joe’s or local co-ops who have level 2 chargers. For roadtripping sure I can see the point but when i had my model 3 i used the superchargers once and that was a 200 mile drive to go pick up our dog, and we still had such a long wait any car would have gotten fully charged while we waited for the breeder to make it to town. With good planning you would theoretically never actually need a DC fast charger, especially with them going up in cost per KW more and more (still cheaper than gas though) this would do especially well in urban environments with stop and go traffic or where all you do is commute to and from work with a trip to town or a friends/families once every few weeks. For myself I charged at work for free and home on my days off, and will do the same thing once my Ariya gets in, luckily as long as you aren’t in cali or china the chargers currently don’t have lines or wait times unless you get unlucky so even with a slower charging vehicle you wont really be slowing anyone down but yourself (and even then a few extra minutes here and there honestly isn’t terrible and the battery will hopefully hold up as well as Toyota claims)

Subaru, Toyota and Kia seem to be in a competition as to which car company can build the ugliest cars.
@marianaramirez7822 жыл бұрын
Why it needs to be so ugly? It is so ugly that it feels like it is by-design. Why are they making a vehicle intentionally ugly?
@b-radsadventures68462 жыл бұрын
As the saying goes, it looks like it fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch. Aside fron the seats and painted body color, this is one of the least visually appealing vehicles I've seen in my lfe.

when you find out it takes 5000lbs of material to make one battery cell you realize how bad this is for the environment.
