Watch Before You Buy: 2024 Subaru Solterra EV Tested On-Road and Off-Road

The Subaru Solterra enters its second year with a few welcome improvements, and without a price hike. Co-developed with Toyota, the Solterra’s all-wheel drive system and road manners are all Subaru, giving the compact five-seat SUV impressive capabilities on moderate off-road trails, as well as outstanding handling in rain and snow.
There are a number of competitors in the segment, including the Solterra’s Toyota bZ4X twin, the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Volkswagen ID.4, Audi Q4 e-tron, and lower trims of the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Some are bigger or more powerful, most have more driving range, but none have more off-road capability.

The Solterra offers a roomy cabin for four, but adding another passenger in the bench-style back seat makes things very tight. The quiet EV has a slew of standard features, including Subaru's low-speed hands-free driving system, and provides more cargo space than most of its rivals. However, it is not rated for towing, while most competitors can pull a small trailer.
Rated at 228 miles of driving range, the Solterra isn’t the electric SUV for everyone. But for those wanting an EV that can handle weekend adventure, it is certainly worth a look.
What's New for 2024: Introduced last year, the Subaru Solterra gets a short list of improvements for 2024. The biggest change is to battery management that cuts DC fast-charging time in half under normal conditions. All trims debut an updated version of Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist system with hands-free driving at low speeds, automated lane-changing assist, and front cross-traffic alert. Additional updates include roof rails on all trims, a driver distraction mitigation system, and a redesigned steering wheel with paddles that control one-pedal regenerative braking and can launch the X-Mode system for off-road driving.

I like mine so far. I got it in October. My first EV from Subaru and my 5th Subaru over the past 15 yrs. 3 Outbacks and 1 Ascent. Not any problems with any of them. But on the Soltera I don't expect to take thsi one to Canada or Idaho.

Lots of useless comments which do not at all describe the car........Like....OOPS, that was noisy and a few others which told Me nothing..............I have heard that the car is very quiet and comfortable which is all I care, plus ground clearance.....I appreciate being able to park nose-in to curbs without pulling off the air dam.......Too many Folks think You must need an off-roader when all You want is the kind of ground clearance We had in 1920.........We are NOT all race car drivers and also do not need or want race car tires...IE...40 series.........Just give Me the excellent tires of the 60's--70's and the ground clearance I have enjoyed for 81 Years.....Paul

Overall I liked the video since by putting this vehicle to its paces, so to speak, allowed me to see that it can handle itself under the guidance of a proper and careful driver. Not going to mince words here, the range is NOT good for a vehicle of this category, not terrible either but Subaru should strive to increase that range to at least 260 miles on a full charge.. and NO, 0-60 don't mean much at all to me, just want a comfortable and safe ride. I've seen enough to satisfy me that I may end up picking up a lease for one of these. Thanks!

Do not ever think of buying a Solterra. I had leased a Solterra two months ago and was utterly disappointed. Charging from 5% to 100% took me 2 DAYS and 3 HOURS. No rear window wiper w/c made visual hard during heavy rain. what more during Winter. Dont try Solterra.

Just curious about your charging experience….were you using the level one plug to charge your car?

Not even that are you really serious, I get the rear wiper but you're driving forward... Or do you need the rear wiper because u find driving in reverse easier.. or maybe just maybe, you were never the customer for this car.. there are so many and u chose Subaru.. it didn't choose you... That's why there are 50 + cars brands.. shop around.. I have no problem with mines

I've had this car for about 2 years now, and I am close to hit 100000 km. I live about 30 km into the wild, with poor road conditions all year. Lots of snow during winter season, and bumpy gravel roads from may to october. During winter we've had long periods of temperatures from -25 to -35 °C. So far I've had NO trouble with this car. Reliable, solid and very nice to handle. Charges from 5%to 100% in about 8 hours at home. Range is 420-ish km in summer, 300-ish in winter (-10 °C dry weather, less when colder or deep snow)

Why 0- 60 matters in hybrids or electric cars will always bafgle be.. very few if any enthusiast purchase this car or any hybrid or electric car especially not for there speed... Why the test matters???
