The anatomic precision of Karate is very interesting but I still am to figure to translate it into fight or self defense situation where you don't have time to do the arming and thus the contraction phase. That's why I think there is little to no good block done in competition except for Soto Uke which is easier to do in a fight given the high Kamae used.

Arming is another form of blocking, it's what many refer to as "hidden techniques" Whilst one arm prepares to block or strike, the other will keep the opponent at a distance

As a form of sport, karate is very good, it will quickly produce sweat & movement of the whole body, but as a form of self-defense, try often competing with practical martial arts moves, especially kick boxing, then we will realize how far we have learned the moves. in facing real combat.

You gotta get good with the closer range kata techniques if you wanna use it effectively. Long range is also doable but you can't always maintain the distance needed for these techniques.
