We were thrilled when Toyota brought the Supra sport coupe back, and even more ecstatic to find out it truly delivered the high-performance goods. And much like the original, Toyota has been making regular enhancements to keep the good times rolling. So, time now to hit the track in the updated Supra and update ourselves on all the fun.

I was never one of the people hating on this car for its BMW roots, but even so this car has still grown on me as it's evolved. It feels like the Supra is finally where it should have been when it was released. All we need now is an "Aerotop" version with the MK4 Turbo-style wing from the factory.

People who fuss on the MK5 A90/J29 Supra and compare it to the MK4 A80 Supra (Fourth Generation Supra), needs to realize that the MK4 A80 Supra was literally a flop in sales while on the dealership market for over nine years ! Plus criticized by the public for being too different to the MK3 A70 Supra (the Third Generation Supra). And was not all that as a Performer while stock(A C4 "base" Corvette of the 1990s literally gave the Turbocharged version RZ Supra A80 MK4 a run for its money and costed a few thousands less than the MK4 A80 Supra RZ). And for the record, people fuss on Toyota "not using their own engine" or "not making a new JZ engine" when it would've costed Toyota to make a new engine for the Supra from scratch/0. And the JZ engines such as the 2JZ/1JZ didn't start in the Supras....the 2JZ first started in the Toyota JZA147(Aristo)/Lexus GS. Not the Supra MK4 A80. While the 1JZ first started in the Toyota Soarer. Not the Supra MK3 A70. And literally the MK4 Supra A80 started from the Lexus SC 400/300 Coupe(the SC 400 has the V8 1UZ while the SC 300 had the 2JZ series engine LONG before the Supra MK4 A80 existed from the SC 400/300).

@@tommorgan1291 no. Its a BMW engine tho its been around since 2015. Mk5s got the most recent version(they come in multiple variants and go threw almost yearly updates that either increase power or changed parts to prevent issues that the last varient had or changed slightly or majority for emissions in other markets). They're said to be the most reliable BMW engine up yo date, it all comes down to what model/variant of the i6 is what partially matters(they early variants aren't terrible they just have coolant issues which bmw fixed within the next year). Bmw is planning on making another variant with more power and new changes and people are ready to throw power at them once they come around.

Lets face it ,57K buys you an Infiniti Q 400 HP red sport four door performance sedan. No other manufacturer makes inline sixes besides BMW these days (at least from what I can tell at the moment), and Supra fans kept begging for an inline six. This is the result of that. Toyota wasn't going to spend money making another inline six if it's only going to be used in just a single vehicle. They could wait a few years for Mazda to unveil their inline six, but that's probably not going to appear for a long time.

Ummm.. it's worth noting that Toyota didn't do squat for this car. They were only involved in the exterior design, an even then, it was designed for them through multiple sketches supplied by Magna's team. Magna Steyr manufactures these for BMW using 100% BMW parts/components. BMW, in exchange, just wanted full access into Toyota's Hydrogen patents. That was the cost to Toyota. And as greedy as they are, seeing that this would cost them $0, they went ahead and sealed the deal. Absolutely no effort from Toyota on this particular product.
@carboydorifutoparty3976

Wdym? They did the exterior design, they did a major update with the 1st year model by changing the heads when the 21 models came around(US models only)for more power,they did theie own fair share of changes to the interiors, they tune the cars suspension yearly,they have their own factory mounts for aftermarket seats,they have points built within the cars chassis to put roll cages in the car,they have engine mounts to even swap the car if the owner wanted to, and the manual model has its own separate way of feel compared to the M3/M4 trans it shares. Its mostly bmw yes but that doesnt mean they slapped it together like they did with the 86. Even then their a good chunk of differences of what toyos been doing with the mk5 vs the Z4 when it came to updates and what's been done to the mk5 since both came out. And lets not forget your talking about the company that makes the F cars that rarely have seen ANY change since the ISF came out(other than the facelift that the RCF got but even then noting much since and the track edition model just gets embarrassed by cars that are 50-60k cheaper than it and it barely keeping up with the cars in its price range at all)

@@carboydorifutoparty3976 Oh please! If they really wanted to come up with a ninja of their own, they would've! Nissan has kept abreast with the Z, still made in Japan with its own resources. Why couldn't Toyota do the same with the Supra? They have Aisin transmissions at their disposal, a 3.4TT V6 used in the LS500 and the Tundra/Sequoia in their arsenal. Sure, it's a crappy and overly complex engine when compared to the B58 but IT IS THEIR OWN. If they truly took pride in their work and stood behind their products, they would've never even engaged with BMW for anything to begin with! People like to talk trash about the Koreans but they're doing a better job at capturing the essence of Toyota/Honda these days than the Japanese themselves. A travesty I tell you but a fact!

@@philhenderson3516 this is late but the z is still on a 10+year old chassis using a already existing engine along with the fact that it's 2-300lbs heavier than its previous gen with soft suspension and having issues even being brought into the market. Sure,they made it themselves,but it's already in the mk5s price bracket or higher and is lack luster in practically every field with the mk5 and other cars in its price range that even a 86 has a chance on taking it on track. Plus the ZF/B58 combo has already shown to be proven combo at aling with many other brands and other cars that even dodge uses them in their high powered hellacts/demons so there's no point in using any of their parts to do so and the B58 has its advantages over toyos V6 since it already has near the same amount of torque as their TTV6(its underrated from factory),much more tunable,has a closed deck block,and has a easier ecu to tune/much easier to package and reach and swap out parts vs having a TTV6 making parts like bigger turbos and other things harder to put into the cars engine bay making positioning and putting different parts in areas difficult since this is a big issues all around for any rwd V6/V8 toyo in the last decade or so(other than the tundras). The B58 isn't hard to service,sure,it has its issues but they arent anything major and majority already know it's issues since they've had them around since 2015 and being in multiple bmw models even up to now. Their own customer base doesn't even really buy their F cars,let alone the fact that dealers are still asking 50k+ for a RC350 when there's a b c many better choices to get over a slow and dated chassis. Yea,they could've made a new supra themselves, but I ask,how many compromises would they have made? We saw what happened to the Z and it's clearly not looking good at all for Nissan no matter how u put it,so if toyo did the same there's no doubt it'd be much more expensive than the mk5 we have no difference in specs and we'd see the same complaints people are making with the new Integra with it being too expensive for what it is(look directly at their F cars and it says it all).

@@carboydorifutoparty3976 I agree with what you wrote and it does make sense somewhat, but I still think that for a company that usually takes an unduly pride in its products (let's face it, aside from the F products, Land Cruiser, Camry, past Supra, and the LF-A, there's nothing in Toyo's arsenal worth of praise) to let go of their ego by resorting to partner with BMW (out of all companies) is rather indolent and a total slap to their core values. If they had a more active involvement in developing the Supra, like maybe borrowing the B58 from BMW but assembling the rest themselves would've made sense, but in this case, Magna assembles the whole thing using 100% BMW components. I find it comical that for certain maintenance mishaps, the cars have to be sent straight to a BMW dealership under warranty as Toyota won't service them. That's insane! It's like them throwing the middle finger to any customer devoted to the Toyota creed. Just imagine what a nightmare it'd be when these cars are out of warranty!?

While 400 had the 1UZ V8 as the "top engine choice" over the 2JZ). MK3 A70 Supra (`which is the best selling Supra to this day.
