There is a B-29 sitting at Boeing Field in Seattle that is a "rescue" restoration. The aircraft was saved from destruction, rescued from a boneyard at a Navy weapons testing range by a group of dedicated volunteers from Colorado. The plane was originally built in 1944 at Boeing's Wichita plant. She was sent to the Mariana Islands to fly with the 875th Bomb Squadron on Isle Field Saipan. She was a rotational airplane used as a spare when a crew's regular plane was down for repairs. As such she never got any nose art but still flew 37 missions over Japan. I was able to get a picture of this plane dropping a load of bombs.
The airplane survived the war and was re-stationed to March Field in California. In 1949 it was converted to a KB-29 Aerial Tanker and assigned to the 55th Air Refueling Squadron in Ramsey AFB Puerto Rico. Huge tanks were fitted into the bomb bays and a spool with a long hose and basket were installed to transfer fuel. Later the airplane was modified again with a boom under the tail for aerial refuelling.
In 1952 she was re-stationed to Forbes AFB in Kansas.
In 1954 she transferred to Biggs AFB in Texas.
In 1956 she was retired and transferred to the United Staes Navy. She was moved to Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake to be used as a target.
By 1986 she was the most complete of a group of B-29s rotting in the Mojave Desert. A group of volunteers from Lowrey AFB located her and applied with the United States Air Force to obtain the plane. The Air Force took the airplane back onto their register with the National Museum of the United States Air Force. The plane was then loaned to The Lowrey Heritage Foundation who then went to California and retrieved the airplane. They had to take it apart and make ten truckloads during the month of December 1986. Re-assembly and restoration began at Lowrey AFB in Denver Colorado. This went on until 1994 when the AFB closed. The museum volunteers had made huge progress with the help and advice from many veterans that flew and worked on B-29's.
Some how the Seattle Museum of Flight acquired the airplane in 1992 and transferred the plane to Seattle. She got taken apart again and trucked to historic Boeing Plant 2 which had recently been emptied. The airplane began more restorations until finally being transferred to and reassembled at the nearby Seattle Museum of Flight. Like a few hundred yards away. In 2014 the museum built the huge covered area she sits under now and still a team of volunteers continue her restoration. Much of her is polished now. This airframe will be a permanent static display. The motors are as she was parked and the propellers have ben recovered and straightened from wrecks. She is parked between a B-17 and a B-47. A few yards further is the prototype #1 Boeing 747. Facing her from the front is a British Airways Concorde next to an Air Force One Boeing 720. Wow I love this place!
One day the museum intends to enclose this building with glass walls. This is the outside pavilion across the street from the main set of pavilions and cafeteria. This is one of top aviation museums of the world and certainly in the top ten for USA facilities.
Go ahead and hit SUBSCRIBE please. I need the help and if you got this far you know I can spin a good story.
