Happy Friday! We're kicking it off with the Canadair CL-13 Sabre! Find out about the many hats our RCAF CL-13 has worn. It's quite a story... Eh!

Canada also operated the CF 100 at the same time. This was a Canadian fighter designed and built by Avro Canada. It was the first all-weather fighter interceptor. The Saber and the Canuck were the primary fighters of the RCAF for much of the 1950s.

I have read that this team did demonstrations not only in Canada but also the US. So the following is possible. I was a school boy in the Galesburg, IL about the time this team was active. I was out in the schoolyard, probably recess, when three maybe four jet fighters came over at low level. They had a paint scheme very similar in color to the Golden Hawks. Mostly yellow as I remember with some red stripes. Definitely a fighter with swept back wings. I thought I had probably mistaken the yellow color as I never found any demonstration teams with those colors until watching this video.

Perfect chase plane for the 747 being a (mostly) subsonic yet very high performance jet.

Loved the episode, this is my favorite RCAF fast mover. Thanks foe showcasing her. Pst.... little niggle tho. It's Defence, not Defense in the Dept of National.... we spell it differently up here.

RCAF flew a sabre in air demos in 2010. Painted gold. It was pretty cool.

The CA-27 or CAC Sabre was the Australian version of the F-86F with 4 canons instead of the 6 machine guns and a rolls Royce Avon engine instead it had better acceleration and is probably one of the best Sabre variants

The Canadair Sabres were the best of all the Sabres it has been argued. The Orenda engines were pretty much the most powerful engines used in a Sabre. Orenda went on to be developing the Iroquois which would have been in the Arrow had it ever made it to production. They were well over 25000 lbs of thrust with AB. The J79s in the prototypes made it fast and the Iroquois would have been 30 or 40% more

I sat for quite a while in one of the Golden Hawks one weekend when my dad came in to catch up on paperwork at RCAF Station Winnipeg. I imagine my mom had said "You can go to work but you take this one!". Would have happily sat there all day. And in fact I sit in airplanes all day now although I can't say I'm as wild about it as I was then.

South Africa got the Cl-13 Mk6 to help fight in the Korean War, my great uncle supposedly flew one in the bold SAAF livery, so my mother has told me.

There is a Golden Hawk CL-13 mounted on the water front of my town on the waterfront of the St Lawrence River. It is still one of the prettiest plane ever IMO.

Actually. There use to be a Chatham NB and it had an RCAF station. (later CFB Chatham). The town of Chatham was merged with the town of Bathurst and is now known as Miramachi NB. The military base was closed in The 80’s
