Engineer: How complicated do you want this drivetrain? Volvo: Yes

I’ll second that the 2023 is no longer twin-charged, a change that I’m happy with, less complex. As for the charging, don’t waste the money on a home charger. 120v charging is horribly slow, but it comes with a 220v adapter as well and when you use that the charging time is 5-6hrs from dead to full charge, which is as fast as it is capable of charging. I wired in a 220 outlet for about $100. Pure electric range is about 35mi IF you don’t use anything while driving (climate, heated seats/steering wheel, radio, etc) AND you use B mode (regen) and you drive in the city. I drive 50/50 city/highway miles, use pure mode for the city, hybrid for my 170mi trip to work, and after 3mo of ownership I’m averaging 60mpg.

I'm not the biggest fan of new Volvos but i think the XC90 is a cool car but i would never sell my old V70 Brick.

*CORRECTION* This Engine IS NOT Twin-charged. It is only turbocharged. I mixed up my notes with an older model. Thanks!
@BrianFraser Жыл бұрын
Great overview - one thing - if this is the facelift then there is no supercharger just a turbo (hence its not called twin-charge anymore)

Lovely car, but the drivetrain complexity will be a nightmare to fix as the car gets older. I'm holding on to my naturally aspirated inline six until more EV options are available. The upcoming EX90 looks promising.
@appledolphin8157 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be too worried about it. They have been doing about the same drivetrain since 2016 and those are doing just fine.

Nope. Through this experience I learned my house doesn’t even have 220, even for the dryer. Strange…

The hump in the 2nd row is actually part of the batteries for the car's hybrid system.

12:06 - You don't have to go through the menus to change the drive mode. Just press the roller button near the gear knob. At least that is how it is in my 2016 XC90 - the first in this series. I don't believe they would have taken away this convenient way of changing drive modes.

Yeah in the facelift it gone ☹ - Dont know if the voice control works with it

Volvo makes good looking but not overstyled vehicles. The Thor's hammer lights are distinctive. The interior has some nice touches like the crystal shifter but it doesn't take minimalism too far like Tesla. It's a shame that the engines and electricals are too complicated. For $85k you could get a nicer car but Volvos fly under the radar. Volvos are old money cars because they're not flashy. Wool seats are the best. I don't see why leather became the luxury seat. Leather is burning hot in the summer, freezing cold in the winter, doesn't breathe and makes your back sweaty, and requires conditioning. Wool is the opposite. There's a reason why the Toyota Century comes with wool seats. Volvo got that part right.

I really don't like how car manufacturers are removing hard buttons. It's technically a computer, and like all your computers, the performance deteriorates and it slows down over time. Not to mention how it's extremely dangerous to look at the screen just to find a button to make a simple change.
@zzoinks Жыл бұрын
It would be interesting if they made the center controls modular. And you could take out the big screen and put a smaller screen and add a panel with buttons underneath. And there would be different panels for climate control, radio etc. Or even performance buttons. But that would probably be too complex to engineer.

This is a great car but if I'm going to pay 85k on a car, I need it to wow me and everyone who sees me driving it. I need it to make a bold statement that yes I have made it!

We just lost our 2019 XC60 to a driver who Tboned the wife (no one hurt) and just put down a deposit on a 23 XC90 recharge Ultimate. It’s the most practical luxury mom mobile ever and I like how Volvo don’t change an arm and a leg for extra features that should be standard the way Audi, MB and BMW do. Yeah it’s an expensive car but you get a lot for your money IMO.
@craiglittle90432 ай бұрын
You can voice command the car to activate most of the controls.
@aitee65062 ай бұрын
As a former xc90 owner, you’re better off fumbling around with the screen rather than trying to talk to it.

I think that luxury cars today are so complex they will be very bad used cars in the future. Well have to see. Meanwhile 10 or 20 year old luxury cars may be okay unless you choose the super technologically advanced ones like BMW 7 series or some Mercedes. Then those might be really broken due to their untested technology.
