I’m so glad you watched this video. Basically, 250 students and about a dozen or so teachers, about 75 people were on the ferry to go to this beautiful island called JeJu. JeJu island belongs to S Korea and a popular vacation spot. Shortly after leaving the ferry started listing to one side due the the over weight by the amount of cargo they were illegally carrying. They were carrying 3x the weight than supposed to. While it was listing there were opportunities get off the ferry because the locals were coming with boats to rescue. The captain the told everyone to stay where they are because if they move it will make the listing worse. They kept repeating this to everyone. The Korean society is deeply structured in hierarchy so if an official tells you to not move, they won’t challenge the order. Meanwhile, as the ferry further listing and the coast guards came on their small ship they were instructed to not intervene in rescuing the passengers but they were also preventing locals from rescuing them. Local divers volunteered to dive and look at the situation but all attempts were were stopped by the coast guards. The news media was told to lie about the situation and so they we’re reporting that everything was ok and people were being rescued. Lies! At first the parents and family thought their loved one were being rescued however by the time they realized what really was happening it was too late, the ferry started sinking. The coast guard crew watch it sink and doing nothing. All of theses orders were coming from the president of S Korea. She was more interested in protecting herself and the owners of the ferry. The crew of the ferry were rescued and some students and other passengers survived. The crew of the ferry were prosecuted but I’m not sure about the owners. Money buys almost everything. There is so much more that goes into it but I already wrote a short essay.

The tragedy happened in 2014. The song was released in 2017, so that is the reason why it has a hopeful connotation. RM wanted to give comfort to the families of the tragedy and to reiterate that they will "never forget" it happened. They never came out of their mouths and said "this song is about the sewol tragedy" the closest they've ever said is its about a tragic event and missing someone. Because of the way S.Korea is, they can't openly talk about these things like we can in America, but still they went the extra mile to make SURE those who know about the issue KNOW what it's really about. Since the release of this song, artists often use the word "spring" in reference to the tragedy so they dont have to face any backlash from the government. This was wayyyyy before BTS were big or there company even had money, and they donated so much to the cause, which they never revealed until it was in the news that they did so they confirmed it. This song is still the highest charting song in S.Korea after 6 years.

The song itself was not written about the tragedy. RM and Suga have said many times what the song was based on, their personal experiences with losing/missing friends. But then they were able to take their personal stories and dedicate the MV to the tragedy. It has been confirmed to be dedicated to the tragedy by Pdogg, but that doesn't mean to ignore the original story or pretend it was made-up. People could VERY openly speak about the tragedy in 2017. In fact, thousands on thousands were, and that is why the president was impeached. This song came out after the impeachment, BTS could speak about it if they wanted to.

Park was let go by the current leadership - so a claim today may also not be a good idea. With the rest you are right. Empathy turned one idea into a simlar/bigger one. @@ruthfischer7615 That is simply not true. BTS have no problem speaking against politics all the time and you will not find a single Korean here in Seoul that doesn't get angry about the tragedy. They would get nothing but praise for speaking about it. And they have directly called out that government in Am I Wrong, DIRECTLY. How could they do that years ago, but not speak on it today? I'm not sure what you mean by "humility forbids it". Just because we come from Asia does not mean we cannot speak the truth or tell our thoughts and opinions. Maybe we just do it in a more respectful way than Americans do. Something BTS has always done and inspires others to do. That being said, why do you not believe what they are saying? Pdogg has spoken about it many times and RM and Suga have spoken about their point-of-view of it many times. Believe them, not fans who exaggerate the politics of South Korea.

It makes no sense to become loud now about it's intention. You either know or you don't/refuse to. They will not be explicit about it as it would defeat the idea in which the MV/choreo was made: it is supposed to heal not to hurt when no healing is possible. And it is not made to earn some kind of cred but to help. I'm sorry that I spoke over you. That wasn't right. One thing that I applaud BTS for is because of this song, so many people around the world now know and are getting to know about this tragedy. What was a constant theme in the protests? "Don't Forget" and BTS has not only kept their memory alive BUT they also showed the world the power of the Korean people who stood up collectibly against an unjust system. As an ARMY, we have front row seats to all the walls put in front of BTS by various archaic and unjust systems and power groups. Like in the song UGH, aren't you reminded of the anger that can cause change for the good? That's literally what BTS have become, a force that has been steadily knocking down walls that have been placed in front of them. It been a joke in the Fandom that coming into BTS we thought we were stanning a boy band but now we're literally constantly fighting for justice because the world decided to show just how ugly it is again. I guess this is just another example of how inspiring they are and how they have helped people to stand up for themselves and others. This is why we say if you want to learn more about BTS, listen to their music, read the lyrics especially, consider the timing the songs came out because it's literally a diary of their growth as people. One of the charms of the Spring Day mv is that it really shows the riscs they've been willing to take (despite having to be subtle about it) to avoid being blacklisted. A lot of people only look at the very western influenced k-pop and forget that South Korea is in fact a very new democracy (1987) with a lot of cultural boundaries and conservative views, and corruption and powerful "old-boys-connections" are a real issue. I have to say that the riscs they took with the Spring Day mv elevated my respect for them immensely. And during the pandemic it also became an anthem of the bond between BTS and ARMY and the pain of separation felt by both. 💜

The ark was a group that debuted in 2014 ( pretty recent from the accident ) with a song about it called “the light “ and the MV is really explicit that’s about the accident , so they got banned or something happened , that affected their company , later out of nowhere they disbanded cuz they said their main vocal needed surgery for her laringe , so they needed a new member while she rest. And they couldn’t get one so they disbanded. Actually adora ( the ex big hit producer that helped to make spring day ) was suppose to debut in that group, but she left to be a producer. Also an ex member is friends with jhope and BTS reacted to their cover of boy in love ( they were so talented ). Also BTS promoting the group better than their company lol.

Spring Day is considered their biggest/best song even if it isn't. The song has been charting in Korea's biggest streaming platform (Melon) since release, 7 years ago. It's the longest charting and most streamed song in the platform. Would be like a song charting on Spotify Global 100 for 7 years and being the most streamed song in the platform. Koreans say it's one of the best songs that represent the feeling of "Han" (The feeling of great sadness, mourning, but still feeling some kind of hope

A few years ago I watched a documentary about the tragedy after learning about the context of Spring Day mv and the most heartbreaking part for me was this part where a mom said she talked to her daughter as the ferry was sinking and she told her daughter to listen to the elders (in this case the captain who had told everyone to stay put and then bailed, which ended up costing so many lives). I think it might've hit a lot of people extra hard in the sense that if those kids had gone against the extreme "listen to your elders" culture, they could've saved themselves. I was also very impacted by one of the divers who tried to rescue kids ended up eventually taking his own life bc of the pain of what he saw down there. It's not in the video bc we only found out this around 2020 and this video is from years before, but an article came out where the families of the victims finally confessed that BTS had actually visited and donated to them first in 2014 (aka their second year of career and when they were broke af. Bang pd even went with them.) The thing is the tragedy happened in 2014, but president park was only impeached in 2017, the year spring day came out. You saw in the video it was revealed the government had a blacklist of artists that dared to speak about the tragedy (and a lot of cultural things receive subsidies from the goverment on SK. I remember them even cutting the funds of a important cultural festival in Busan just for exhibiting a video or movie aknowledging the ferry), so the fact the boys visited the families and donated the very year the tragedy happened could've killed their carreer, like they'd have no power to defend themselves if they were blacklisted back then. And the way that the families kept quiet about this and protected the boys for years until they were big enough that no government could take them down, they must've felt it was finally safe to admit what bts had done for them. I have a lot of respect for the way the tannies stand up for what they believe it's right even when it's dificult and risky. As surely other people said Spring Day is still charting on Melon to this day (korea's biggest streaming platform) and literally has never left that chart (imagine a song not leaving the top 100 for almost 6 years, it's crazy, we call her "the queen" and bts refered to her as a zombie bc she refuses to die lol). @@yasminesb7947 Same, that was a ton of money for them back then, like they were still finantially struggling. What they did was really brave, but I think it makes sense for them bc bts started their career already speaking up for the youth and telling young people to stand up for themselves and fight for their dreams, so it must've hit them pretty hard to see so many kids losing their lives in such a senseless way, bc they trusted grown-ups (like they were told to) that didn't protect them. Also seeing all the greed and corruption that led to that situation in the first place... it's hard to ignore the anger it generates, it might make you more willing to take risks and I can really feel that in the lyrics of Am I Wrong. And then they went and performed that on tv. It makes me think of rapline performing Cypher 3 in Busan, a concert organized by the governement so basically screaming it to their faces "you can't control my sht", then announcing their enlistment 2 days later, all that after the goverment dragged the exemption issue like 4 years. People sometimes mistake BTS being nice, with them being punch bags and they're most certainly not. I love and respect them so much, they're really special people.

@@camilesouzaa Omg yes... People think they were the ones postponing their enlistment when they never filed any postponement request. It's the government that passed the BTS postponing law, that made things drag on so that the group would bring in a lot of money and that it would be exploited diplomatically - remember that Dynamite alone generated 8000 jobs in SK in the first month -... BTS wanted to enlist after their MOTS tour but the pandemic disrupted everything, and I guess even the government didn't want them to enlist for fear of something happening to them because of Covid, so they made themselves useful by releasing BE. And you're right, their very first video released on their Bangtan TV channel in 2012, was a verse from RM sampling Kanye West's "power" to encourage young people to go vote if they want to change things, telling them "Vote is yours, Future is ours. Vote or just shut up". ... They hadn't even debuted yet... I don't know of any other group or idol that was so invested with their own artistic identity long before they debuted.

And the song isn't specifically about the tragedy. The lyrics were written about friends they lost (due to fame or just growing apart as they get older). It can be interpreted as loved ones who passed away. The MV was making a statement. The song is sad, but it tries to bring comfort and hope as well. I don't remember the exact wording/idea and I can't find the source at the moment, but there is a Korean word that refers to the struggle of those who aren't in power but fight for the truth and hope for a better future. Something along those lines... But the song has been said to embody this idea of anger, sadness, struggle, and hope even against the odds. So maybe that is what you are feeling? So the song is sad and happy but it's not happy... If I find the word and the correct phrasing, I'll come back and edit this.

I remember years ago when this came out and I went down the rabbit hole for this tragedy. loved ones who were given the items back instead of their kids even uploaded recordings from their phones of the kids last conversations. It's so sad.... To give more context. There is a good documentary that shows how really dark this tragedy. Even the US military who have troops stationed here were told to back off, they were told to wait because they had things handled. They told the kids to wait but the crew and captain abandoned ship. The president was mia in critical moments with missing time logs of where she was (supposedly doing her hair). Which is why they called for impeachment and resignation and prison because the coast guard was told they needed to wait for her offices and her instructions. The civilian divers and rescue volunteers who showed up we're physically stopped. Some who went to rescue bodies after and those who were stopped from going where they were alive, unali*ed themselves because this was so traumatic. Theres so many moving parts and things that failed for this... I'm usually not one to cry but listening to what happened and the last moments and even some of the survivers... Like they were really just sentenced to die....

When i first heard this song with the MV it gave me the feeling of melancholy. I got the sense it was about loss but not a recent loss. Like remembering the good times while still feeling the weight of grief that you hope will lesson as time passes. When I watched an analysis vid about the song and MV it made more sense but even without knowing the back story they were able to present the tone and message that there's still hope for better days even after a great loss.

Spring Day pretty much shows all the stages of grief. It’s a reassurance that, even though right now one may not be there yet, and that’s fine, but spring will come. They performed the queen a lot during the pandemic, since it served the same purpose of giving hope when it seems there’s none.

In 2020 we found out that back in 2014 after the tragedy bts had secretly visited the victims' families and comforted them as well as helped them out personally. No one said anything until 2020 to protect bts since it was openly known the government was pushing back on people who even just sympathized with the victims, and at this point bts were barely surviving about to disband from lack of funds, getting censored by the government would have been the end of their careers. While they visited the families in 2014 they also donated 80K together with bighit, another thing that shows how seriously they took it. This was at the time when bts were near disbandment, they had a 5$ per person budget for food, literal mushrooms growing in their practice studio which flooded every time it rained to the point that they had to scoop out the water and move the recording equipment somewhere safe etc. Like that 80K wasn't just pocket money from them.

I believe the song Spring Day is still on the Korean Music charts to this day. Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, it was a very bold, courageous move for BTS to do this song and video. It could have brought them strife and could have blacklisted them (once again please correct me if I'm wrong.) Thank you for always being honest in your reactions. Your feelings about the song itself are completely valid. The music video and the song are different entities. The song itself is not about the tragedy as it was written before the tragedy occurred. The song was about the grief and loss felt from no longer being able to hang out with their old friends. Spring Day's themes provided the perfect sentiment for the video, which is dedicated to the Sewol tragedy. Unfortunately because of how powerful the video is, many have conflated it with the song's original meaning.

Sorry buh the Sewol incident happened in 2014 , Spring day came out in 2017 .The music video is the relation to it with also the feeling of 'Han' Koreans use to express the emotions (can't really explain it buh it's a known things in SK that Spring day embodies the feeling) that's why it's trends every year especially during Spring as ' better things will come around' The government that was responsible for the Sewol incident was impeached in 2017 (another reason a correlation might be), BTS visited the families of the victim in 2014 to donate which was risky for their lives and career and also in the same album of Spring day is the song Am I wrong which is more a direct statement to the impeached bad government ( Suga even included a statement of one of the politicians in his rap verse so it was very visible to know they recipient)

There are good documentaries on KZbin about the tragedy if you want a deeper dive into the events. The one by Brick Immorter is 2 parts and very in-depth. I personally really like the Bulletproof Vibes explanation video of the MV. Th Italian ARMY one is good, too, but the Bulletproof Vibes video has slightly different interpretations of certain moments (both valid), and I think that it presents the interpretation with much more clarity. Also, there are many meanings to this song. Originally, they wrote it about friendships they had lost, but the music video is definitely about the Sewol tragedy so it holds that meaning, too. Over time it’s become a song that BTS sings when they’re trying to express a sense of longing missing loved ones (and ARMY), but want to express hope knowing that eventually time will pass and they will be reunited (for instance they sang it during the pandemic and their Tiny Desk concert which was before live performances were allowed again. They also sang it during their Yet To Come concert in Busan, knowing it was the last time they’d perform together before their military service. It’s always beautiful but bittersweet to hear it.

A heartbreaking but incredible documentary on the tragedy is called 'Diving Bell: The Truth Shall Not Sink with Sewol'. Here is a link to it and it goes into great detail about what happened and even shows footage and audio from some of the cell phones of the kids while the ferry was sinking and how the crew told them to stay put to save themselves. It's pretty raw to watch as you can see/hear the moment some of the students realised they were going to die. I believe there is a documentary video by the New York Times that is still available on KZbin. If I remember it right I think it's about 50+ minutes long. It's well done but hard to watch due to the live videos from the students inside the ferry. I can't forget them and know as a parent myself that it's a pain their friends and family must find unbearable at times. I remember RM saying he was sitting on a bench in the park and starting thinking..."Leaves are falling....Leave are falling" and thus started the songwriting process for this song...

When BTS wrote "Spring Day" the whole of Korea was in an uproar over the tragedy. The Korean government though was in a hurry to try and cover up if they could any culpability that they had. Because of that they were cracking down on anyone that put out "Propaganda" that put the government in a bad light. So BTS had to use simbolism and and a happy tune to get over the censors that were not letting music go thru that was to politically charged during that time. I love your videos and your great mind and how strong you feel about things. I was watching a show the other day about Dionne Warwick and how she used to go on a bus to do night club shows with a bus full of singers and muscians from the New York area and even though most of them were careful not to do things so the white folk don't get mad at them Dionne would say "what Im not suppose to turn my back to the white folk" watch me or "what you don't want me to sing these lyrics" watch me "what Im not suppose to sit on the chairs" but you want me to buy this food "stick it up your ..." . The bus was always afraid of what Dionne would do, not because she wasn't right but because those governments in that day and age were not willing to change. That is where Korea is today between that time period where they know they should and are used to having all the power. BTS is Korea's Dionne Warwick but they have to walk a fine line between letting other know what they feel must change and not overstepping the censors that constantly listen to music to make sure that no one steps out of the norms. It's hard for us in todays no bounds music industry, just look at the grammys winners for pop duo/group, the performance was beyond the strictures of normal society but that is what plays in todays society and BTS has to walk a path between that music industry and their government. So I know it is odd to you but just wanted you to think about where they are situated they don't play to the US market alone they also live within the Korean system.

I think it's important to note that while BTS were being very brave, thousands on thousands of Koreans were going out and talking about it then. This song came out AFTER the president had been impeached, so yes BTS could have faced backlash, but they weren't at serious risk by that time.

RM and Suga have said that many times, what the song was based on. Snowpiercer was a metaphor to loneness and isolation in the song, and the idea of a "Spring Day" coming to save someone, like in Snowpiercer. It wasn't necessarily political.

Thank you...what you probably still don't know.....the President at the time was convicted and sentenced to 22 years in prison. Unfortunately, the President that took her place, President Moon, actually PARDONED her after serving only 4 years! Coincidentally, President Moon is also the President who appointed BTS as cultural ambassadors and bestowed them with diplomatic passports. To this day, I have never heard BTS mention what Moon did pardoning the former president and how it affected the victims' families and the citizens of Korea The corruption continues and unfortunately the government continues to, IMO, mistreat and use BTS (i.e., cowardly 'jacking' them around on exemption from mililtary service as well as billing them for the cost of the Busan concert at which they 'volunteered' to perform.) Even though this is an excellent mini-documentary on the tragedy, it does leave out a few things. First, and this is what got a lot of ppl. The captain and crew, while it was capsizing told everyone to stay in place, not to move, and then all of them changed their clothes to civilian clothes and were the first to be rescued from the Ferry. The video shows the guy dressed in a black shirt and black shorts being helped into another boat, that was the piece of shit captain. Now the other piece of shit in the situation was the president of the country. When the situation started happening and the mayday was received, the president's house was informed immediately. Her aide told the courts that she had a headache and she was going to pie down for an hour or two and that she would see to it when she got up. When all of this came out in the press, some even believed she is the one that made the cops stop the divers from going down and saving more, I don't know about that one, but the public demanding action, damn near the whole of South Korea protested and was able to get her removed from office as well as charges brought against her and the captain and crew. Now the song wasn't made for the incident. RM said that he was walking one day down by the Han River, thinking of loved ones and family and friends. The song wrote itself. And at first, they didn't want to say it, they wanted the focus on the victims, but they did admit a couple of years later that yes the video was made in memory of that day. This documentary was amazing, but there is another explanation video that will go scene by scene and give you explanations for damn near everything, I hope you see that one as well. Both of the videos will give you a better understanding of what and why they did what they did. This song has helped Korean ppl so much, that even though it was released in 2017, and the event of the Sewol Ferry happened in 2014, the song has never left the Korean music charts. Besides "Run" and "I Need You," "Spring Day," in my opinion these we're the three songs that solidified BTS, and these songs opened them up to the west... Please watch the other explanation video. Even if u don't do a reaction, please watch it. I apologize for such a long post, and if I repeated anything that someone else said, I apologize for that as well. Spring Day song is a very sad song. For me to understand it l had to pull up the actual story of the ship accident about the kids drowning. The ship was calling for help but nobody wanted to wake up the president to tell what was really happening. I felt like if the gov't would had reached out to surrounding cities when this happened or even other military base to help them get those kids off the boat a lot could have been saved. They had one coast guard boat the coast guard said they was never trained to swim that deep so they couldn't go down to help save the kids. Only 2 citizens was trying to bring the case up from the ship, Then the government called off the search very shortly and left the boat under water trying to cover it up.
