I tracked 951.655 gallons of fuel used in 16,809 miles in a 2013 2500 Duramax HD. Stock tune = 16.931 mpg, Calculated Industries race tune = 16.98 mpg, Hot Street tune = 17.73 mpg, Heavy tow tune (approximately 5 tons) 11.53 mpg. I got the best milage with the light tow tune, 18.053 mpg. My driving is 70% highway, 20% rural and the balance city. I always add diesel kleen during every fill up. For the most enjoyable driving experience I use the Hot Street tune exclusively now, unless towing, am approaching 200,000 thousand and running well, I purchased the truck brand new.

My 24 3500 HC Duramax has 11,000 miles on it and I tow a few days per week, so each tank of fuel has a mix of highway, towing and city driving. According to my Fuelly, my best MPG tracked was 18.5 which was zero towing. My weekly mix of towing and not towing, I get around 12.9 MPG on average.

For comparison, my 22 Ram 3500 Cumming 68rfe which was leveled on 35s, did about exactly the same, having tracked those numbers as well. Keep in mind the Ram was the same numbers as the chevy, but the ram was leveled on 35s. Stock it would have beaten the Chevy.

Congratulations, Dad bought a sweet truck, I'm glad to see he finally got it. It's funny how the other two are in a torque war while Chevrolet is saying 975 is enough, & in my opinion they're right. People have to remember what ever their truck is able to pull it also have to stop. Thanks for sharing the new purchase.

Not bad, definitely expect it to get a little better once broken in. Have a stock 06 LBZ Duramax, I'd expect it to get a tick over 19 on a similar drive. Really curious about gas with the 10 speed - never thought I'd want a gasser hd, but that combo is appealing to me (simplicity, expect lower cost to own, and powerful enough for 11k pound trailer a few times a year).

I am watching son drive the 3500. He commented the smooth ride and being 3500. Just remember the springs are the same 2500-3500 until you load it and the extra leaves engage. That is when a "stiffer" ride might be noticable. if so only. I have 3500 now (just upgraded from 2500)

I always find it funny people buy a 70-80 HD diesel truck and worry about fuel mileage. IMO if buying fuel is a concern you probably should not be buys one of these trucks in the first place. I have had one over 29 years and actually pull heavy loads with them and never once worried about fuel mileage as I need the truck to do what it does, fuel is just part of what it takes to get the work done.
@TPowell12

I agree. If I'm spending all this money on a truck I don't really care about the fuel consumption. It's a big truck so of course I expect to spend a lot on gas. The difference between brands is minimal anyway so I wouldn't consider it a factor in my purchasing decision.

Many people do care about fuel economy, but of course it’s just one part of an overall consideration into running costs. No one wants something to eat into their bottom line more than they reasonably feel it should.

Money is a secondary consideration, but mileage and fuel capacity determine range, as you know, which is important to me in the vast emptiness of Nevada where fuel can be hard to find. Since I wanted a GM w a 36 gallon tank I chose the diesel to maximize range, could have easily used the gasser other than that.

Great vids BTW: On my 6th D-Max....08, 12, 14, 17, 20, 24 Traded in my 2020 High Country HD for a new 2024 AT4 HD. There was a noticeable power improvement in the Duramax from the 20 to 24 --- that said the new truck mileage is worse, using 2-3 more liters per 100Km. Don't particularly care - just noted its' worse. Revised 2024 DMax motor is a beast tho!

Just got my 2024 Duramax 2500HD and noticed on the highway, not towing, I’m only getting 18 MPG (at 500 odometer miles) whereas on the 2018 (75,000 miles) I just traded in I would be in the 20-21 range. Don’t think the emissions Controls have changed so what do you think is causing the MPG loss unless it’s just not broken yet🤷?

@@chammockutube Noticed the same. Did some research on the changes for 2024 Duramax - which prob explains it... New turbocharger, improved piston design, revised high pressure system, larger injectors. That is prob the answer. Extra power = more fuel consumption.

Pretty impressive fuel economy. Hard to say value and $84,000 lol, BUT Chevrolet definitely has the best value in the HD segment. And also it’s worth mentioning you could spec an LT truck with leather buckets and get the same interior with most of the features for about $8-10,000 less money (US dollars). As far as the interior goes you’d be losing cooled seats, memory seats, power extend mirrors, HUD option and heated rear seats. On the exterior you’re only losing LED headlights and a little bit of chrome trim. Beautiful truck though and for the money vs what you get, the competition can’t touch it in price.

Not bad. I had 4 Rangers in a row. All 4x4s with 3 different engines 2.3, 3.0 and 2 with the 4 litre.. non of them got better than 20 mpg. My Colorado 2.8 litre diesel gets 29-32 depending on how heavy footed I get. So for the size and weight of that 3500 I think 18 is amazing…… Compared to a gas truck.

Still waiting to see how my 2024 3500 Silverado mileage shakes out. At 3500 miles on the clock, I'm still averaging less than 15 MPG with a mix of hills, city and highway. It will get better as she breaks in, I'm sure. My 2017 3500 HD that I traded managed almost 23 MPG on a road trip a few years back. Made it from Sacramento to Portland on a single tank of fuel. That clock was at about 50K miles.

Towing differences between them how does a load feel back there. Yes “no problem for the 3500” but is it worth that for the gas mileage and suspension and overall size. Daily living with them, it’s all fun and games until you have to find parking. Maintenace cost differences/cost to own and operate. Let’s be honest most people aren’t stressing these trucks that often is that value or are cost so similar that you should just go bigger just in case. Are cabs roomier? Is it harder to steer/operate?

A 3900 lb dry weight TC loaded to camp w the wifey, dog, and beer is in dually range. Honestly you'd be better off in a Ford SD 350 SRW which has a significant payload and fuel capacity advantage over GM. Could you make it work on a 3500 w add ons sure, do I prefer GM over Ford absolutely!

@@paulm9047 sir I researched that info. GM reduces total payload by 150 pounds per seat. So the five seat crew is reduced 750 pounds or in this trucks case we are at 3100 pounds after people. A Northern Lite 8 6 camper with all options has a dry weight of 2670 pounds. I added 800 pounds for wet weight and stuff. That puts me at 3470 pounds. Given that we are only two folks I think I will be fine. Ford dealer said they don't subtract for people. 6.6 gasser has none of the silly cylinder stuff. I have one with the 6 speed and it pulls my 5th wheel about 5k miles a year. It’s decent as a daily driver but I choose my motorcycle during the summer months for my commute

Yeah 2” lift with 37” ko2 on stock 4.10 gears. Tires are only 4lb per tire heavier over stock though. Its been a weird trip vs my 22’ mojave vs my previous 20’ sport s. Sport got 12-13L on 35”. Unsure why my Mojave is 3-4L consistently worse.

I have a question which maybe I’m just uninformed about. I know the EPA doesn’t require fuel mileage from vehicles with 10k + GVWRs, but the EPA is an American body. Does Canada just fall in line with the governmental requirements of another country and not mandate those same figures?
@TruckKing
@TruckKing 10 ай бұрын
In this case the MNR and EPA follow the same guidelines as they apply to HD trucks

It should get better as the engine breaks in. You should adjust your headrest, one day you'll be sorry you haven't. Adjust seating position means also ajusting headrest.

Congrats to your dad on his new purchase! No doubt the GM is more capable vs the Ram (3500 vs 2500, leaf suspension, more power) and will tow his trailer far better, but gotta say, for my needs I'd rather own his old Ram, that truck is still stunning.

@TruckKing

I can't say I've ever met anyone that uses Imperial MPG in Canada. In fact, many Canadian automakers got in trouble for advertising Imperial MPG numbers without disclosing that fact. So seems to me it would make things confusing. Plus, Miles Per Gallon is a flawed statistic anyways. It should always be "unit per distance," and never "distance per unit," to make things scale correctly.
@charlesb4267

That is the first thing I do as well, convert either US mpg to Imperial or the funky metric system to Imperial, I am from Alberta and yes I was part way through school before the metric system was shoved down our throats in Canada. My calculators I use even have the litres to US or Imperial conversion, doubt they make them anymore.
