Huge kudos to you guys for explaining this in understandable language. Way too many big truck and big rv reviewers don't understand the registration limitations and how those affect that door sticker. If you want to go even further into the weeds you can look at US DOT classifications and begin to realize why some owners want full capability with (on paper) a low GVWR.

So from what I can understand The 2500 w/max tow, can actually handle the 3500 payload, except on paper they have to classified it in a different category? " so the only difference is on paper "

Appreciated this video. It confirmed all my suspicions over the years of purchasing trucks for myself and my business. I always go just 2500. I had an older knowledgeable sales man years ago explain the very minor difference. He told me “kid, get whatever has what you want. Great video. Just bought a 2024 2500HD and was curious how many differences there were. The number differences when it comes to towing and payload capacities are all over the place lol. I was comparing mine with the 2500 in your video. For our current RV purpose and future plans, the 2500HD is more than enough truck. We went from 2011 F150 working at about 80% capacity to 2500HD at 35%. Can't wait till camping season. Again, great videos and thanks from fellow Ontarian.

They are loaded down from day one and normally see anywhere from 25000 to 40000 per year until they reach 275000 miles. This is minimal preventative maint, extended oil changes 10000 to 15000 miles no transmission maint and no rear axle maint. We stopped buying Dodge trucks for a while except for half tons.

Without a doubt, best video I’ve ever seen if you want to know about truck differences, but also what the different weight ratings mean, especially when it comes to licensing and registration. Nice work gentlemen. I’ve been in that boat where I bought a Ram 2500, didn’t pay attention to the fact that it only had 1900 lbs of payload, sold it after 3 years to specifically get a 3500 dually to get the payload I needed to tow a big 5th wheel. Have since stepped down to a SRW 3500 Chevy. Also nice to see that the steering column trim on your truck is crooked as well…..

I went with a 2024 3500HD and traded in my 2020 2500HD to get the added payload. I tow a fairly heavy 5th wheel from NY State to Florida and back each year and I was right up against the max weights with the 2500HD. The 2500HD was more than capable but if I was ever in a wreck and an attorney decided to weigh my truck and trailer and I was over weight at all, I would be in trouble so I opted for the 3500HD. I went with the LT instead of the LTZ 3500HD because all I cared about that the LTZ offered over the LT was the LED Headlights. So I saved $3,500 U.S. on the MSRP and then bought LED bulbs for $250 and installed them myself.

I am sold on 3500 because I want a truck camper and I want to stay below legal payload. My big question is long bed versus 7 foot bed. I prefer a short bed but how the vehicle handles when loaded can be impacted by wheelbase and where the center of gravity is relative to the rear axle. Can you do a video with max payload in each truck and see how each handles?

Remember there are big differences between years as well. In the early 2000’s the 1500hd and the 2500 were identical, you didn’t get a diesel option in those because it was saved for the 2500hd as well as the full float rear axle and frame. Also If you compare a 2500hd from the early 2000’s to a single wheel 3500hd they are identical aside from more leafs on the 3500.

According to GM specs with the 2500hd, the GVRW IS 11,350 LBS. When you add the Max Tow pkg, it increases the GVRW to 11,750 lbs. Then of course, the 3500hd has the 12,100 lb GVRW. Just to clarify. I looked at all of these before ordering my 3500. I really enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work.

Great review on the differences, thank you so much for that!! One interesting thing here - In British Columbia Canada we pay a PST based luxury tax (additional 3%) on the 2500 series, which is not applicable on the 3500 series due to the fact that the 3500 series (at least here in BC) is considered in a commercial class, thus the luxury tax does not apply, even though it may be more luxury equipped. This tax applies to almost any passenger type gas/diesel vehicle in BC that are valued over $55,000

I didn’t know it was a max tow when I bought it but figured it out when I decided to buy a 39 ft travel trailer. Some benefits I accidentally got was a higher payload because my trim and options packages were on the basic side as a work truck. I can load a bit more than a one ton because of it. I still have all the muscle, breaks, suspension, better mirrors, and so on but it’s not fancy on the inside. Just my style. Oh and much much cheaper!!

I don’t have a need for either actually but I like to learn, even though I sold Chevy for a year and some change. The main thing that I don’t like about the LTZ vs the HC outside of price is that I can’t stand big chrome bumpers. But if I had to pick a Chevy HD truck 🛻 I would just get the ZR2 trim.

They had 3 LTZ trucks with every option but sun roof and 5th wheel prep and z71 for the same sticker price as the HC. Orders weren't getting filled during the pandemic and I really needed a new truck when I finally went looking. With back and neck problems I didn't want a harsher ride and there were mixed opinions on the ride of the 3500 plus komnifornia would have just charged me more for tags and my needs were easily met with the 2500. I love mine and added the banks pedal monster which makes even more difference than the derringer tuner. It can get 20 mpg on the freeway at 85 mpg and tows 12-14k pounds with ease.

Good video guys. One thing worth mentioning is how much your payload can be affected depending on the trim. Case in point, that high country 2500 has a 2,890lb payload because it’s loaded up with lots of lipstick and shiny bits. My 22 2500 WT CCSB Z71 has 3,520lb payload because it doesn’t have all the fancy stuff but 600 pounds of payload more is significant. Also any difference in height of about an inch can be attributed to heavier spring packs with the camper and snow plow prep packs. My 2500 has both so the springs are heavier. 5600/6600 so that’s where the inch can come in.

I'm not sure if current trucks are like this but historically 3500's came with the heaviest duty rear AND front axles. The 2500's with the heaviest tow package came with the same frame, rear axle and rear suspension but the front axle was lighter duty by about 1000lb load capacity. This was true for many years, all the way into at least the early 2000's. Even my 1977 K30 vs my 1976 heavy K20 (it was a special order chassis cab for use as a tow truck) is this way. Both have the same full floating HD 14-bolt rear end but the K20 has a Dana 44 front axle (or GM equivalent) and the K30 has a Dana 60 front axle. What is the difference regarding the front axle and front suspension in 2024 2500HD vs 3500's?

It's a great point that you're bringing up the commercial legal compliance guidelines around the gvwr/axle ratings between the 2500/3500 models. It's very true re commercial regulations between the 2500/3500 models - I do wonder how much is jurisdiction based. I'm a fellow Canadian, but presumably you will have numerous American followers. The 3500 models typically have a much lower margin of rating difference between their respective GAWR Front/Rear and the total GVWRs vs the 2500 models. The thing you brought up about the Rams is correct (presumably with some GM/Ford models too) - there could be upwards of a 2000+lb difference between the rated axle limits and the GVWR limit; however on the 3500 models the difference is typically much lower seemingly suggesting that the commercial weight classes have more to do with that difference than the actual capability of the respective trucks

One thing that most people don't know is the 2500s are Torque limited in 1st gear, which GM originally admitted to but has worked to destroy the evidence of that admission. Their original marketing said something like "with a 12 inch ring gear 3500s get full torque in 1st gear" or something like that, so it was implied in their marketing and confirmed by one of their engineers. Also of note, the 12" ring gear is only available on Duramax powered trucks, 3500 Gas trucks still have the smaller 11.5" ring gear axle

With General Motors, another difference is if you want the max tow in the three-quarter ton it only comes with the diesel. If you want the gas motor and the higher towing, you gotta go with the 1 ton truck.

Glad to hear you bring this to light , my personal feelings are that we should either stay at the 10 k hard cap or the government should raise the weight classifications to reflect modern heavy picks so as a business owner you can still drive your 2500 diesel a few states away to pickup something without having to do a log book and in service times dates and stop at weigh stations. FYI any 2600 at 10,001 gvwr or higher is a class 3 1 ton truck as defined by the us dot ,and fir insurance purposes. That 2500 emblem is a lie

I recently purchased a 2024 Silverado 2500HD LTZ, and I can frankly say that the Max Tow Package came as quite a surprise. The window sticker explicitly says the Max Tow Pkg comes with "3500HD frame, leaf springs, 12" rear axle, HD shock package". Literally the only difference I can tell between my truck and an identical 3500HD SRW are the badges on the outside. This is my third 2500HD truck in a row from Chevy (2004 and 2013 prior to this one), and I can say that the evolution of these trucks has been remarkable.

My truck is a 22 High Country 3500 LWB.I think if you are going to tow, especially 5th wheel, or Gooseneck, you should choose the long bed instead of the short bed. The short bed, whether you choose the factory Puck system or go after market install, you will have a hitch point that is about four or five inches behind the axle. This because the factory has placed a crossmember on the bed where the hitch needs to be. The long box does not have said crossmember at the axle centerline. With the hitch behind the axle, the heavier the hitch weight, the more weight you take from the front axle, granted it is not a great amount, but you need to add a little weight instead of removing from the front. The factory don't seem concerned with this, as a conventional trailer Max rating of 20,000 lbs, you have a hitch weight of 2,000 lbs, that is going to take weight off of the front axle.

Exactly. It’s a pain in the ass. See a feature you like in a presented option, and it undoes several choice made earlier and/or dumps a $6000 package you picked earlier. Terrible implementation IMHO.

My 24 LTZ 2500 has heads up display and rearview camera. It has everything the high country does except z71 and power running boards. Payload is 3100. Pulls my 40’ fifth wheel with ease. It doesn’t have the max trailering but that would have been nice to know about when I bought it in April of 2023.

I believe the LTZ is better value and deal compared to the high country. my truck rides great and numbers are 21,600 gooseneck, 20,000 bumper and 3789 max pay. my truck is 12,100 gvwr

I have a 2024 2500 duramax in midnight edition. I don’t tow heavy often but I like having the capability. I will tow a pallet of lime with 1000 lbs of fertilizer for my property. Perhaps while the Ram is still in your (dads) possession, you could do a comparative of the GVWR that would be possible by engineering rather than that of legality. Seems like a worthy follow up to this video and would be helpful to many, specifically Ram owners, who are curious what can be done safely with their truck, rather than the neutered numbers on the door post.
