90% of the time these “ colours of the year” really don’t take off too quickly. I work in cabinetry, you really get to see which colours designers are loving and working with IRL. It’s more like “ colours of the decade” VS “of the year”

My friends' new base cabinets are in a custom color very similar to Blue Nova. It was mixed to match the backsplash tile. The counters are white quartz and the upper cabinets are stark white. Very modern coastal - there is a water view from the great room. I'll let them know that they are ahead of the curve :)

To me, color drenching looks like the "Landlord Special", where the owner just indiscriminately paints over everything in sight with one bucket, from ceiling to baseboards... light switches and outlets included! 😅

When using a light color in a small space I think it makes sense. I painted one small bathroom sort of a ballerina pink (with glitter added because I think it is fun), I painted the walls and ceiling. It looks very nice. I painted the baseboards white, though they do need to be repainted, I made a mistake with the type of caulk I used. You were ahead of your time!

I need to paint a small wall in a tiny toilet under the stairs (removed a radiator and patched the wall and love the colour that’s in there) and it occurred to me that the ceiling is already the colour of the walls and I ought to go ahead and paint the baseboards the same… it would help with the small space.

When I saw the colour of the year I was so disappointed. I am not a fan of blue (green lover!) and I really don’t like Blue Nova, so I dismissed the entire palette. But seeing you break it down, and introduce the colours on their own, completely changed my opinion. I love the pink tones, the deep oranges and the green. Thank you for another great video, and for helping me understand the thinking behind the way the palette was conceived!

I just refreshed all my rooms, after 22 years of living with what I did when we moved in, for $$$, and I watch HGtV and a very few good channels like this. I do not do trendy-trends. Nevertheless, I have decided that home fashions are a huge contributor to trashing the planet, as well as getting us to part with our money. Love that Nick said at the top, if you like your colors, keep them. But the ripping out of floors, one example, to put in gray (a few years ago) and now putting in light floors, after before the gray, dark floors. Well, hardwood floors used to be more of a mid-range color, and were “in fashion” in color and width, for decades. I am now boycotting hgtv.

Remember that these channels, magazines, and shows have large staff developing more projects and "to do's that people could ever start and complete. Then, they rinse/repeat the process daily, monthly, and weekly, etc. The net result is that their business model can not allow one to have more than a brief interval of equilibrium before they work on making people dissatisfied. Oscar Wilde said, "Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable we are forced to change it every six months." The turnaround time since then has been reduced considerably!

There is a funny scene in the 1948 movie Mr Blandings Builds His Dreamhouse, where Myrna Loy is giving specific examples for each shade of paint for the interior rooms (Robins EggBlue, Butter Yellow, etc.). On purple, my husband picked a really pale purple for our bedroom (called Globe Thistle) and a brighter warmer purple for his office (called Lavish Lavender) and they are magnificent. Purple is such an inspiring, magical color (in the right shades), and it's perked up these spaces so nicely. Would absolutely recommend. This is my kind of palette. I love soft, desaturated colors, and always warm neutrals. I’m always and forever a soft ivory girl. That’s been my indoor color for over 20 years…so yeah…I’m either dedicated or boring, but I love it. My shade now is less warm/buttery than it was in 2000, so it’s more creamy white…that’s updated for me! Dove White’s always popular. I just change up decor with pops of seasonal color. I will never, ever, ever…live in anything cool, and gray, especially on my walls! You’re right, Nick…this year’s palette is soft, balanced, cohesive…last year was so disjointed & jarring! Only color I liked on it was the Tofino Sunset. That might have been pretty and an interesting “color neutral” in a room…though I’d still just be admiring it from afar, in my warm ivory room. :)
@ambsat
@ambsat 11 ай бұрын
**oops correction, meant “White Dove” above. “Dove White” was actually my color in 2000/ California paints. I wish I’d done White Dove when I repainted in 2019, somehow I only discovered it after we painted, and after I painstakingly perused every ivory! I think I saw it and when it wasn’t like my old Dove White, went over it. I got close with Mountain Peak White, Benjamin Moore, but White Dove does seem softer, a tad warmer.

Years ago when wallpaper was prominent , I did outlet covers & switch plates in the wallpaper ( again , to blend in ) even to the point of lining up the patterns , then a matching color on the actual outlet if needed . The best $300 I ever spent was for a color consultant for my townhouse. She picked a light golden yellow for my living and dining rooms when she saw my MCM tourquoise pottery collection and artwork and teak and similar color furniture, and the way the light shifts over the day. I would never have figured it out by myself, but I haved loved her choice every day. Picking paint based at least partly on the things you love and will keep, and how it will look in different parts of a room in different light makes sense to me, based on how well it turned out for me.

I have large chunky white trim lots of windows and a big white fireplace and a couple of big white bookshelves. I have accented with black leather and wood furniture (leaning towards the topaz warm brown) and lots of plants. So to say I am a fan of the blue and the topaz would be an understatement. I like these colors! I actually really like Honeybee. I feel like it could look really cool in a more retro space. I also like Pristine. I think peachy off whites don’t get enough love. Especially since n north-facing rooms or rooms with fewer windows, an off white with a slightly peach undertone in an eggshell finish can give the illusion of more sunlight bouncing around the room. Whereas if you painted the same room a cool-toned color or even a stark white it could look cold or sterile and a more brown toned off white could make it look dirty. (I’m also a fan of Sherwin Williams Ibis White for this reason. Painted a north-facing room this once and it immediately brightened it up.)

It least they're peaking out of the muddy, downer colors. You might have thought that the colors of the past few years were warm, but to me, they were full of downer basic color. Greyish or brownish red isn't really red - it's grey or brown with red overtones. Greyish or brownish green isn't really green, it's grey or brown with green over tones .. I don't need everything in jewel tones, but they were really downers to me.

I didn't know there were colors of the year, lol. Yellow is my favorite. For wall paint, I prefer a calm yellow, I don't want to have to wear sunglasses around my home. I don't get tired of it, mainly because lots of other colors go with it. :)

If you’re a designer, it doesn’t matter what you like/dislike, it’s up to your client. Of course, you can guide them… I really liked how he talked about Topaz + White Dove working with wood flooring/furnishings. Taking flooring into consideration is HUGE. Also, doing a video on what color of flooring is best for your room, lighting, etc., would be a great video, so many choices these days! I’m new to the channel, will look back to see if he’s already done that.

I like mixing cool and warm colors together. My new scheme after this reno is done will be warm beige and greys( imagine softer tones of Honybee and Gray together on white fabric for curtains and throw rugs) natural maple cabinets, dark granite counters, honey bamboo floors. Some family antiques in dark wood.

At first when I saw the Blue Nova come through in their announcement of Color of the Year I was disappointed. But, seeing the whole palette together has me much more excited about the possibilities. Certainly as you painted out it feels more balanced than last year’s palette and opens up a lot of possibilities.

It's such a shame to see grey and pastels come back again. It seems that these colours are used in all the redecorating shows. There are soooo many colours to choose from and the paint companies/tv shows keep coming back to grey. I, also, have never been a big fan of pastels. I miss the earth tones and jewel colours. You can really decorate a room so beautifully with these colours, wood furniture and a lot of nature light.

Maybe because I'm old- and I am old-- I find painting your ceiling and baseboards and walls all the same color reads cheap apartment. It's like someone either doesn't have the money or the energy or the skill to paint the ceiling a nice crisp ceiling paint white and then go ahead and edge and do the walls etc. Particularly when the ceiling and the walls are the same white. Just me, " cheap apartment " decorating. 😵‍💫

Blue topaz is ordinary amber colored topaz that has been irradiated ... I don't know the details of the process. My father's retirement hobby was gem cutting ... I have a huge blue topaz pendant he cut for me, and told me how topaz (which I think of as a smoky brownish yellow) became a clear sky blue.

I really don’t understand the hate against orange. I used to have a bright orange room, and it always looked like I had my lights on! It’s such a joyous beautiful colour, and whenever I see an orange today I’m immediately drawn to it. I would paint my room in Topaz in A HEARTBEAT! You shouldn’t need courage to use beautiful colours! I would combine it with a dark green, some burgundy and dark purple hues… Maybe an nice maroon - it me be bc of my student accommodation but I’m just so sick of white walls.

I never realized that there are colour palettes for every year in interior design Only in Christmas decorations which change every year so that you have to buy everything again and again and again....😉 I think the colours of 2024 work very nicely together and are looking good. Not my cup of tea though, I have not a home in which everything is bought at the same time. There are thrifted pieces, few antique ones, few new ones, all in all lots of colours except for blue and black.

Love your videos! I don't generally care about trends, most of the stuff in my house was my parents. That said, I really dislike grey and I am so happy to see the colors finally warm up. I do like both last years colors and this years, I think you could mix the two. I bought my house in2008 and the owners had remodeled it, while they did a great job the paint colors had a grey tinge, which I didn't like. This is the first time I've found colors that I want to use to repaint.
