2024 F1 Belgian GP Friday analysis by Peter Windsor

There's a very different look to this round of the 2024 FIA F1 World Championship because Red Bull's Max Verstappen goes into the race with a ten-place grid penalty - the result of the team's fifth ICE (internal combustion engine) change since the start of the year. Because it's relatively easy to overtake at Spa, this is a logical circuit on which to take a hit like this. Two factors, however, will make life very difficult for Max come Sunday: one, rain is predicted for qualifying and, two, the McLaren-Mercedes of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri again look Red Bull-quick. They finished one-two in FP2 at Spa - and they were very strong on the fuel runs, too. Peter Windsor in this video looks at how Red Bull approaching the weekend and at the relative speeds of the major runners.

Say that they don't take a penalty in Singapore. without the Penalty they would score like ... 10 points or something. and in spa they prob will finish top 4 If they take a penalty in Singapore they'll score none and there is a chance that they don't get the win in Spa with McLaren that quick. so it'll be a double loss. to me it seems RBR are trying to maximize the number of wins without relying on their car's supreme speed like the seasons before. Slowly edging away from the competition while McLaren and Ferrari are having a mental breakdown.

All teams will be using more than the 4 allotted engines. It’s not enough, but the penalties are specifically there to minimize how many they do use. Timing has more to do with this being a good track for recovering from the penalties. RB has done it at this track before because of that reason, it’s just earlier in the season than previously.

It isn't as clear as Max taking his 5th engine this week and therefore expecting that engine to finish the season. Engines 1-4 are allowed to be reused (Max's 4th from Canada just never did anything). This being round 14 the actual mileage of each engine could vary by quite a bit. Example for Max could be #1- 5 GP #2 - 4 GP #3- 4 #4 - dead #5 -1 You will want the new engines at Spa and Monza, because they are fairly "easy" circuits to overtake. You can put engine 1 (pick any old number you like) at a track like Singapore, where the engine power just isn't needed. I think RB did something similar last year of the year before, taking engines at both Spa and Monza. So, if RB are expecting a close battle, they very well could take #6 at Monza to make life easy on themselves to finish the season.

The jury is still out if Mclaren has mad progress or if they still have a ton of downforce but it's horribly inefficient, and all they did was make a flexy wing to give them a respectable top speed. If the FIA clamps down on whatever trick they are using they fall back to 3-4th next day.

you know as a RBR fan (and somewhat a Ferrari fan cuz i'm a masochist) I honestly think that if F1 teams can cheat their way into victory ... then good for them. cuz cheating and playing dirty and taking advantage of the rules is part of F1 as it should be. and it's always been like that. that's why I don't mind Max's insane driving style (in terms of overtakes and defense) or Multi-21 doesn't bother me. Neither does crashgate. the sport isn't fair it's just the nature of it.

1. Every teams number 1 goal is to win the drivers championship. 2. Only one driver wins the championship. 3. In the standings, theres only one driver close enough to max to have a chance at winning the championship. Neither is Oscar. Use your brain. it's not a ban. it's common sense. Having drivers in the same team taking points off of each other is dumb. It's why most experienced teams will avoid having two drivers with the same driving style and why they will always choose one driver as the lead. They then build the car for that drivers style. If you want to see what happens when you have two drivers that have similar styles in team. Watch nico v hamilton and how many problems it caused. That is the reality of this sport.

A lot would depend on who Alonso’s teammate is. Fernando has never been an ace qualifier; but a maestro in races, but qualifying is half the battle and Fernando does have a self destructive streak when he’s not in absolute control.

The best drivers in f1 are able to consistently extract all of the performance out of their car. Lap after lap. You give them a car that has more performance than the rest of the grid they will extract that performance. The top drivers are all close to each other in terms of talent and consistency the car is what gives them the biggest advantage on the rest. Everybody thought max was so much more talented than the rest of the grid but now that other cars have caught up to Red Bulls performance you see that max isn’t so superior as one might’ve thought previously

honestly I don't think that's going to happen cuz despite having the fastest car they're nothing like RBR in terms of reliability, strategy, and other operational tasks. they're sort of like ferrari. a fast car + a fast driver but a lacking team in terms of management. so ... i don't think Lando will be able to dominate (at least not like Max and RBR did). So it's gonna be interesting anyways. a slower car with an absolutely smooth team, or a faster car with a clueless team. which one will come out on top

Plus you also have to consider the fact that McLaren finished 4th last year and hence got a lot more allocated CFD time compared RB. Rob Wilson moved to McLaren with a couple of others from Redbull as well. Cost cap might also be hindering Redbull's development cause Checo keeps crashing the car and that money could be well used for research. Either way, McLaren is doing a stellar job.
