It's funny how Ford is shocked that people might actually want a truck that doesn't cost $50,000+. Fleets have been eating this up as well. I think I've seen more fleet Mavericks out in the wild than privately owned ones.

I ordered a 2023 maverick XLT hybrid on sept 19 2022, when the order banks were open. I ordered the rear hitch, rear sliding window, engine block heater and co-pilot 360. Got it in July 2023. As of now I have 800 miles on. I love the truck and especially the gas mileage. After I got the maverick, I decided to sell my F150 4x4 with 47,000 miles on, and like new. I am retired now and didn't need such a big truck anymore. The maverick is so much easier to park, set things in the bed, zip around in, etc. and I don't have to get a step ladder to check the oil level , like I did in the F150.

My thoughts exactly. As I get older, I really don't need my F-150 FX4 anymore. It's difficult to find a parking spot it'll fit in, and it just guzzles gas. 🤠

Coming from a full sized truck owner, I had one of these as a rental for work, and really enjoyed it. It was the 2.0t and was actually pretty quick. Also used the awd a lot driving up fairly steep hills for the work I do. Perfect size also. It was refreshing driving a “truck” that doesn’t feel like piloting a boat. Wish more people were buying these than the stupid full sized and heavy duty’s they definitely don’t need, clogging our roads up…

Great review! Got my XLT Hybrid back in early '22 and after 30k miles, I have absolutely no regrets. Mainly used as a downtown commuter, with weekend DIY jobs, mountain trips, and occasional long road trips, it's averaged just over 42mpg lifetime. Not bad for $25k! Also have yet to get stranded in Colorado winters thanks for some proper snow tires. I would trade in for a new compact pickup with AWD and/or PHEV drivetrain, however. Whether, that's another Ford, or a Toyota, or one of the other brands, is TBD.

So many of the so-c called automotive KZbinrs that claim to be "automotive journalists" are nothing but shills for the manufacturers. They are comped for attending car shows and for attending the new car reveals so they can't be unbiased or they will get moved down the list. Another KZbin channel recently got a Ranger Raptor for MSRP from a dealership in Colorado but that same dealership has a "market adjustment" on the price if the general public wants to buy one.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. An eCVT in a hybrid is a completely different beast than a traditional CVT. Most eCVT's have no belt, no clutch, no hydraulics or solenoids to make noise or fail. Yet reviewers always seem surprised when an eCVT does not have "that droning noise"... Other than that I absolutely love your reviews!
@jacquesw3086
@jacquesw3086 8 ай бұрын
It is worth saying, though, that I think marketing teams can be fired solely on the grounds of calling an eCVT an eCVT. Names like "virtual CVT", "electric transaxle" or "beltless CVT" give a better idea to consumers that the same technology found in a CVT is not used in an eCVT - only function is similar.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 8 ай бұрын
I was not surprised at all, because I also understand the difference between the technologies. What I was trying to say, is that a lot of people expect a CVT type of dynamic. Maverick doesn’t really have that.
@readtherealanthonyfaucibyr6444
@readtherealanthonyfaucibyr6444 7 ай бұрын
I thought "that droning noise" referred to the fact that the engine stays revved during acceleration for a long constant period with an eCVT rather than the traditional highs and lows of traditional shifting transmissions. I don't like how some reviewers complain about it because the point is that the engine stays in the optimum power band. It's how the engine and trans work best.

My XLT turned two in March. Hybrid and it has been back to the dealer many times for a parasitic draw/low battery situation. I only have 10,000 miles on my Maverick because the dealer has giving me loaners for up to six months now. The Parasitic draw seems to have started a year ago when I bought a separate car to drive around and left the Maverick in the garage to preserve it. So not driving the hybrid every day is an issue or only using eco mode.

We got the hybrid XLT. Only concern was snow performance and, equipped with good winter tires, happy to report it did just fine. As strong as our Subaru we use to go to the mountain? No, but better than other pickups I’ve seen relying on 4WD and all-seasons, and plenty good enough for my daily driving. Averaging 37 mpg with half and half city/freeway. Shop around for MSRP: I saved $5k “market adjustment” by driving 90 minutes to a smaller town.

"They can always take an Uber" Love it! So true. I deal with this all the time with my Camry Hybrid that I bought for my retirement so I can afford to go places without breaking the bank. Friends complain often about my car being too low making it more difficult to get up out of. You know, 30 years ago before the SUV and Pickup craze, ALL cars were sedans and station wagons that were ALL low to the ground just like my Camry. We managed somehow and were healthier and more agile for it. Sorry this is off topic for the vehicle tested. It just struck a chord with me and gave me a new saying for all the "whiners" getting in and out of my car, "Well, you can always take an Uber!" Lol! 😄 Very nice review by the way. 👍👌

The hybrid which was the standard engine when I ordered had become a $1500 option plus there had been price increases by Ford. Even with the "private offer" by Ford of $3000 it was still $2400 more than when I ordered. So I told them to keep it. We genuinely wanted to pick one of these up this fall. The dealer addendums and the overall experience left us fairly disappointed. Both the dealers we went to denigrated the Maverick and tried to put us into full size trucks. The other issue was the nearly five thousand dollar addendum. We bought a Honda Ridgeline instead. Hate to say it but the Dealer network is killing Ford. I refuse to pay a "market adjustment" just for the privilege of driving their vehicles. Makes me wish Honda made a full size diesel so when I am ready to replace our F350 we would have another option.

The door keypad is one of the best inventions ever and I don't know why other car companies don't implement it. Nissan used to...As for how it works with keyless entry - you can only lock the car with the keys inside using the keypad. Tom, for those wanting to bash the Maverick as it's a unibody pickup are forgetting, or completely ignorant of the fact that Ford once had a unibody F-series in the 1960s. My 2.0L AWD has managed 34 mpg highway and I'm receiving 23 mpg with my daily commuting with winter conditions. I'd say the biggest changes I'd consider making would be the ride could be made a touch less truck-like, sound system could have better door speakers(though they're not the worst), and why doesn't the luxury package on the XLT include push button start. Sure, I could pick at a few other things, but none of these things would be a deal breaker on a vehicle of this price. For what it is at the price I paid it's a great little vehicle. It's economical, quick, fun to drive, versatile, and maneuverable.

4 months ago I bought my '22 xl hybrid used with 50K miles on it. I absolutely LOVE this vehicle. My only regret is no cruise control, although I will likely swap the steering wheel button clusters and reprogram the computer to give me that. What a beast this thing is. I get about 37 mpg average. Stellar. And... I can flat tow it behind my (future) RV purchase when I retire in a couple of years.

Great review, Tom, as always. I waited a year and 20 days to get my 2022 XLT Hybrid, and after a year and a half could not be happier. My last truck was a 1998 Tacoma, and I couldn't go more than two hours without getting a backache. The Mav (as you rightly observed in your initial vid) is a great long-hauler -- smooth, quiet and comfortable. Mine has the brake-grab issue at very low speed that seems to plague some Mavs, but I haven't noticed it for a while. Also could use an audio upgrade -- its system is mediocre. Thinking of getting a PHEV version when available? I'd suggest staying with the regular hybrid to keep the weight down and help keep the gas engine (and 12V battery) in shape, especially if you're a mostly city driver like me. I would consider trading for an AWD hybrid Mav, but other than that expect to continue happily motoring in my '22 Mav for years.

I had 2 Fords for a decade and loved the keypad. It's handy at work, I could leave my purse (and key) at my desk and put things in or out of the car. Keyed or keyless you can't start it w/o the key. Now I drive a Nissan and miss the combo pad, but it's my 1st car that you just unlock by touching the door handle with the key on you, which i really like.

I've had an 08 Escape Hybrid for ~8 years. I think it has a similar drivetrain to the Maverick. The thought of "pickupizing" it crossed my mind a few years back but I got an old Ranger instead. I much prefer the Escape for urban use. 0-60 acceleration isn't bad but highway passing (50-80mph.) is excellent. I'm cheap when it comes to cars and haven't bought a new car for 40 years. I'm looking forward to picking up an old Maverick for a few grand some time down the road.

I get the idea you save money on fuel with hybrid, but truck owners are usually keeping their trucks for a decade or longer. Some of the hybrid power package type of vehicles have costly issues when it comes to repairs. I think it makes sense to save money upfront, deal with higher fuel costs, to avoid hybrid service/repair issues. I especially fear Ford products, which as a brand has lead the recall charts three years in a row. Maybe Maverick is better when it comes to other Ford products.

You must have wealthy people in your area, because no one I know is trading their $45,000 and up trucks just a few years after getting it. I met someone early the pandemic that got $5,000 from the dealer on top of what they had paid a year earlier to sell their truck to the dealer, but those were strange times. Where I live, most trucks are over five years old. I still see those classic two door 11980's Toyota trucks cruising around, usually with gardening equipment. :) @@Lq32332

I haven’t sat in the back of the new Tacoma but I heard the Maverick has more rear and front leg room plus this little truck delivers more payload than most Tacomas as well. The industry needs to take note, there is a huge demand for a well packaged, versatile, efficient, and value conscious small truck, or any size truck fur that matter. Living on a rural farm this little hybrid is super attractive vehicles most of the errands and trips to town that don’t necessitate the full size truck.

I was looking at a Maverick and I went with the most basic XL model. They wanted an $8,000 markup along with 1500 of transportation fees. At that point it was stepping on Lexus territory. On top of that the Ford dealership would not give me a deal unless I went with their financing options. The cheapest financing option was 16%. My credit score was well into the 800s and this is just completely unacceptable...

My local Ford Dealer in Reno NV also had a ridiculous markup...so I bought my 2023 Tremor Maverick at a different Nevada dealer that had no dealer markup but it did have a "destination & delivery" fee of $1595 that was on Ford's "window sticker" which seems to be the cost of buying a Ford vehicle shipped from Mexico. I had no trade-in and did not finance the Maverick. My impression is the bigger the city any brand of vehicle dealership is in the more mark-ups they tack on.

@@tri3pleagent Ok, so my guess is it would likely sell for $32k then (I assume it would be about the same price as a RAV4 hybrid since it would likely share most of its platform/powertrain/parts). While that is $6k more than the Ford, you get AWD, quite a bit more power, and likely better fuel economy, reliability, resale value and warranty (I am not sure what Ford offers for hybrid warranties though). Also, if Ford dealers are slapping on extra money to the MSRP, maybe that narrows the gap (assuming Toyota doesn't do that). I can't speak on the "over MSRP" part as that is not allowed where I live (it's illegal). Even without the extra fees, it would just give another great option in the segment and I would imagine many people would spend the bit more to get the Toyota version since it offers a bit more to those who want it.

I have a 2024 Maverick XL. I waited 18 months to get the truck. The price of the XL has gone from $21,490 to $25,410. So an increase of $3,920 over the two years. I have the 2.0 Ecoboost engine and really like it. It is averaging around 29 mpg so far. The truck is fun to drive and handles very good. The XLT is $2,500 more than the XL. One thing to remember is the more options you get, the higher chance of something breaking or wearing out. I think Ford has too many things now that are computer controlled. Got locked out of my truck a few days ago by the computer. That is the first time that has ever happened to me in about 56 years of driving. I originally ordered a hybrid on 09/20/22, but Ford came out with a memo in Dec. of 2022, saying you had a better chance of getting a Maverick if you changed to Ecoboost. I changed the order and still waited 18 months. It's a great little truck, but I will never wait that long on a new vehicle again.
