If I was going to keep long-term manual, if I was a sell after a few years guy DCT maybe. Automatic will always require more maintenance long term and potential for failures. Short term should have no problems. The 87 fuel is helpful for travel.

Man has convinced a soon to be new rider to go from lusting after a Hayabusa to wanting an AT 😂…I remember them doing the Dakar back in the day, but as with most kids, I always fancied the crotch rockets and seeing as my hero Sheene rode Suzukis, I always wanted one from that stable. Almost turning 50 soon and want to get a full license before then …and thanks to guys like this, I’m completely confused in terms of what I want…is it bad that I want one of every type of bike in the shed 😂

@@friktionrc I have had every genre of bike possible. I brought a new Ninja 400 as it will do everything i need it to including 3000km tours. Im 58 and not a small guy and its awesome. It does gravel roads etc easily as its so light. Dont care if i crash or drop it is liberating as it doesnt matter. Thats my end result after being confused as well. Main reason i hate adventure bikes is because they have no proper fairings like a road bike. This causes so much hassle and buffeting.

I bought a 2018 AT with DCT and, not gonna lie, I was skeptical. But it didn’t take long to realize that shifting isn’t as central to the riding experience as you might think. In fact, I found that I can enjoy the nature around me on twisty mountain roads more, focus better and navigate difficult terrain when off-road, and pay more attention to traffic in urban areas. All of this allows me to get more out of every ride and be safer. Automatic transmission on a motorcycle is an absolute game changer.

I recently sold 2 Africa Twins, a 2017 CRF 1000 and a 2021 Africa Twin Adventure Sport CRF 1100 and purchased a BMW R 1300 GS. Rode both ATs on-road and off-road extensively. I had no idea how much I would miss DCT. I wouldn’t say I have buyers remorse, but the AT with DCT is a fantastic bike.

I bought the 2024 Standard for many reasons related to my riding and life style. People do rave about the DCT - but I am not ready to give up the clutch. Shifting is part of the fun for me. Though i did add the quick shifter when I feeling like kicking in sport bike mode. It's butter smooth. Overall I really like the bike. It's a great allrounder except for the really hairy stuff as you've shown. I don't notice any engine heat at all so I found that comment curious. I wear both long and short boots and always riding jeans. Never felt any warmth at all.

Re: Ian's comment stating that he wouldn't buy an Africa Twin because he'd rather have a mostly road focused adv bike and have a second mostly off road biased machine..... I personally find having one bike that covers both secondary/gravel roads and highways more satisfying than have separate bikes. There's just something inherently rewarding with having one bike and being able to cover multiple surfaces with it. I think it's a mastery issue, where you spend all of your time on one bike and become very familiar with how it behaves/responds to your inputs. This "one bike" philosophy works really well with the Africa Twin, where it's highway abilities are really quite exceptional, yet it still feels balanced and stable on gravel. Had a 2020 ATAS and loved it for touring.

This hit for me the exact same way. Ian's point, given his broad experience riding all these bikes as often as he does, is that they are all great machines but the AT sits sort of in the middle. What do I hear? It is a perfect machine for me. I love riding resource roads and twisty highways in the mountains around where I live. My little 390ADV (first bike ever) is great, but it has very limited highway power and sure don't like carrying much luagge or the wife. I'm dreaming hard about an AT AS as my perfect machine and I just can't seem to find anything that would be more suited to me. Wife wants to go for a rip? Push button. Loading up luggage and heading out for 2 days? Push button. Huge fuel tank, Android Auto, Cruise control? Yes please! It is like a poor-man's BMW GS and it sure don't seem 'cheap', just crazy practical. My dream trips include heading up to the 'End of the Road' in the Artic circle, crossing Canada and back, etc., but I also love hitting some gravel and getting into a nice lake or creek campsite. Want to rip around a couple of 'were-once-roads' that maybe have a couple of steep deactivations to deal with? Push a few buttons, drop the windscreen and hit it. On top of that it is a Honda. I like to buy and own things forever and I don't see that low-compression Honda engine giving you any issues pushing well over 100,000 km like some of the old ones did (and still do).

The Africa Twin of either stripe is the Labrador retriever of adventure bikes. Not the best at anything, but really competent at everything. When you consider the relative light weight, the prodigious torque, baked in Honda reliability, and high resale value, it becomes very easy to love. I’ve enjoyed my 2017 standard model since new and have no intention to replace it with any new bike.

Hey Ian, longtime subscriber on my personal YT account. I’ve been drooling over the ATAS for over 5 years. They just don’t come to my area. Like at all. I’ve only ever seen two in person: the one I almost bought 5 years ago when I was a new-ish rider, and the 2024 ATAS that I’m literally going to be picking up in an hour or so. I also own a HD Low Rider ST (loved your review!), so it’s weird to hear people complaining about a 525-550 pound bike. My LRST is pushing 800 pounds, so even 550 is like a revelation to me. 😂 That said, I completely respect and appreciate the difficulty that off-road riding brings. As far as the DCT/Clutch argument goes, it’s a no-brainer for me. I’m a Persian Gulf veteran who has arthritis in both wrists and hands. While I operate my LRST without issue, watching you navigate the standard AT on the Enduro portion of the test ride, I’m fully aware that the DCT is the better choice for me, and I’ll likely be sticking to fire roads and gravel, let alone any single track. I’m interested to see if Honda implements the E-Clutch with the AT. I think it could be the sweet spot: giving us complete manual control, but allowing us to slow speed maneuver without fear of stalling the engine. I’m just so pumped I FINALLY have my dream bike. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some HD, but I love Big Red’s reliability, attention to detail, and TECH! I’m considering getting the foot shifter for my AT though, so I don’t always have to keep it in Drive or be forced to always use the paddle shifters. I’m not faking the funk, this bike will be a much more road/touring focused steed. But I’m retired and have plenty of time to ride as much as I want to get acquainted with it and git gud at some light off road riding. I’m 52, BTW, so I’m old enough to know better, but young enough to disregard those fears. 😂 Thanks again for one of my favorite motorcycle channels on YT. Been watching for years and looking forward to finally getting to research products for real through your videos. I’ll plan on using links in your videos as a way to give back. Stay shiny side up! 😎 Derek aka Throttle Fiend

As a long-experienced rider with strong motor-memory for using a clutch (as "one with my body"), I will, still, opt for the DCT because it helps the rider in so many situations, both on and off road. I could definitely identify with your Adventure Sport model "wishing for the clutch" on the rocky, steep, single-track trail. I believe, there is no DCT substitute for the interplay that one gets by feathering the clutch in concert with working the throttle while in first or second gear. However, for me, the DCT still wins out in 95 percent of my riding situations. Great comparison of models and in-depth review - in typical Big Rock Moto fashion!!!

I cross shopped the ATAS DCT against the Tiger 900 GT Pro. My riding is 99% on road and found the Tiger to be the better road bike. Much more nimble and fun to ride and is about 70 lbs less weight. With the quick shifter on the Tiger, it's as close to a DCT as you can get. I know, I've had the DCT on a Goldwing. Out the door price was also about $2k less on the Tiger with more features. Finally, I'm 6'3" and found the Tiger ergos more comfortable.

That’s interesting for me, I’m cross-shopping the same two bikes and I’m 6’4”. I’d prefer the Honda for the CarPlay, electric suspension and Honda reliability and spares. Looks is also in the Hondas favour. The Tiger I’d prefer for the price and the fact that Triumph really threw everything at the model as standard. How are your finding engine heat on the Tiger?

I would never have opted for a DCT in my youth, but as I'm hitting 60 soon I can see its benefits. My strength is not what it used to be and coming to a stop with both feet down would definitely help with the weight of a fully loaded bike. The only thing that stops sealing the deal is that rediculous 15 button cluster on the left hand side. I'm also a fan of simplicity and that's why the Suzuki 1050 is still in the running for me. Hopefully I'll make my mind up over the winter and will decide in spring '25 which one to lay my money down on. Thanks again Ian for your superb presentation. I know that a lot of people will complain about the weight of these bikes. Before, completely ignoring a bike because of its weight, ride it first and take it to a few trails if possible. Be mindful of your age of course. for a few years, I was in the “lightest bike” band wagon and last year finally bought a vstrom 800 de. For my riding, trails, highway, forest road etcetera, it is a wonderful bike regardless of its weight. I am sure many will have the same experience with the Africa Twin.

I believe most people would be surprised on how these bigs bike behave off road while doing great onroad, plus most people don’t really need all the capability of a dual sport or truly off-road oriented bike. If I need an off road more capable bike, I rather buy one and trail it to the site.

Well Ian, you have done it again. Outstanding review as always and conscious of your delivery, which i personally consider very professional. Well i just bought today a NEW 23 Africa Twin Adventure Sports DCT ES, i was seriously considering the 24 model but i was offered a huge reduction in price over the 24 model and that was just a to good of a deal to knock back. $16,000 Australian dollars, which is about $10,500 US. The money saved will kit this bike out. I have been holding back on buying as I wanted to see your review as I trust your judgement and experience. Thank you Ian for helping me make my decision-making much easier. Throttle on and be safe.

2024 is not that much different compared to 2023. There is no real new mechanical tech of any kind, same engine, same transmission etc. Really only minor software tweaks and bit of fairings redisign. Actually, maybe some detriment to AS version, depends how you look at it, smaller front tire, less suspension travel, more road bias etc... I love my $$ discounted 2023 LOL

Very nice work Ian, I really appreciate your work for this community! I had a DCT for 5 years and now bought a manual. The DCT saved my a$$ a couple times when I was fatigued and stranded off-road, so def loved it. But in everyday situations it felt too controlling in slow speeds, and the manual is more confident inspiring for me. I disagree with your analysis of who the bike is for. I agree that "primarily off road" and "primarily on road" will find other bikes better, but there's a wide range of riders who are neither. Just want a solid bike that feels natural on and off the road and runs on regular fuel. And the AT, in my opinion, is exactly the best as this :)

This is an amazing review! No BS whatsoever. I ride a 2022 Africa Twin AS (manual) and as someone who prefers to have one bike, and is vertically challenged (5' 7"), the AT does the job for me both on highway riding as well as bad roads to gravel (plenty of which we have in India). I wish it was lighter though, and the Outback Motortek full protection kit makes it even more heavier.

I bought the DCT because of friends who have the GL DCT. I was mostly curious, and have been surprisingly pleased. Just finished a 11K ride, and was a big labor saver. I thought slow speed maneuvers would be a problem but not so. I have heard so many, including Big Rock Moto say they were thinking it lugs. I found the Urban ride mode fixes that in town where starting/stopping is more often. My only complaint is how it eats rear tires. Probably because of the engine braking (which sounds awesome). The fuel range was only 20 miles less than my friend on a GSA. The chain was cleaned after one thousand miles and only needed adjustment two times over the course of the 11k miles. Great motorcycle for what I use it for. No single tracks, but plenty of gravel. I broke the hand guard also, cheap repair. The apple car play I found hard to use, so I added a garmin XT.

The only thing i dont like is that there is no upper winddeflectors for the 2024. But the dct is so much better and the 2024 dont have the same jumping issues i had on the 2020.Thanks for all the good reviews and the indepth technical content, keep up the good work! from an Afriva Twin bloodfan for life.

Fantastic head to head review Ian. I have Africa Twin fever. I am looking hard at them. Eye opening take on the 19 inch front tire and how well it handles off road riding. I had written it off as a non-option. After watching that review I feel much more informed about my decision. Grateful you have the opportunity for extended testing and are such a technical minded reviewer. Thanks for the info

I can tell you as an owner of the 24 standard that the suspension factory stock is very soft and road bias. I end up finding a PDF file for multiple settings for the bike and tuned it to sport or off-road and it’s 100 times better so when you’re riding your adventure sports and you’re switching to different modes, of course it’s gonna feel better in the off-road Because nobody spent the time to dial it in on the standard model, but it’s not bad for real. That pdf is a game changer for me.

Hi, after 4 years of happiness with a Tiger 900 GT, one month ago, trade it for an Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES 2024 manuel. I am really happy of my change. I think it’s an upgrade! The more i ride her, the more i love her. I am surprised of your comment about engine heat on the legs. On my Tiger 900 2020, the engine heat was a really big con when i was in trafic not moving or riding really slowly in hot summers days. I really dont feel as much heat on my legs on my new love, my 2024 AF AS ES.

@@oldtimer3824 Both are great bikes; no doubt. For me the Africa Twin always have been and is still the most beautiful adventure bike. But the Africa Twin always have been inaccessible for me as it always have been a very tall bike. It have changed in 2024. The Africa Twin Adventure Sports now have a 19 inches front wheel and a lower seat height. With the low seat in option the height is only 795 mm. It’s very accessible now. I can easily get my both feet flat on the ground. It’s like Honda made this change for me 🤗. Yes, the Tiger 900 GT is lighter, but when we look at both bikes side to side, we understand why the Africa Twin AS is heavier. It’s not only because she have a bigger gaz tank, it’s because the Africa Twin is build rock solid like an army tank! The weight is very well distributed on the Africa Twin so i dont feel it much. On asphalted twisted roads, the Africa Twin feel more agile. On gravel roads, the Africa Twin feel more stable. The engine on the Africa Twin is a peach. The Tiger 900 GT is also a fantastic bike & better than ever since 2024 model. But, i felt in love with the new Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES 2024.

I had a 2017 model AT, it was a 'good' bike but it wasn't what I was searching for at the time, I loved the exhaust note with aftermarket exhaust. I now have a 1250 GSA which I love for more sport touring oriented adventure travel with the occasional dirt/gravel thrown in. If I were to sell it or be in the market for a new bike I'd have to take a serious look at the new '24 AT AS with DCT. At nearly $10K less loaded out than a new 1300 GS I'd be hard pressed to justify the difference for the German steed and the difference left over would buy me a new 300 smoker haha. Thanks for the always detailed and honest review, you never fail us.

I have a standard Africa Twin with the standard transmission and I choose that because I knew that I was going to take the bike down the Baja Peninsula of Mexico and wanted to make sure that if I fell I didn't want to damage something I couldn't repair in Baja. You can use vice grips and wire to get a manual clutch bike going but if you broke the DCT shift mechanism in Mexico you might end up trailering the bike home.

I really want the 2024 AS DCT, it seems to be the perfect machine for crappy pavement (common in my area), patches of start/stop/hectic traffic (don't need to be constantly on the clutch) and the occasional off-pavement adventure (mostly just dirt and gravel, no hard enduro like that hill in the review). Not to mention it's easily the most handsome of the adventure bikes right now.

Exactly that’s what this bike is for. It’s definitely not for any kind of road that even like moderate off-road. You might like the sport version better it still can handle those rough roads and it still can easily handle the road so I mean it’s only an inch lower.

DCT or not: I'd opt for DCT. It's nice to be the 1st guy off the line when the light turns green. There's no comparison to manual clutch when it comes to this. DCT is like Porsche Launch Ctrl but on a bike. No matter how skillful you may be with a manual clutch, you will not be able to match a DCT launch from rest because the gears are perfectly engaged 100% of the time --- there're no misses, EVER.

Both are beautiful looking bikes . Thanks for an honest and thorough review . I think any rider would love one of these as a second bike after learning on something a little more forgiving as in weight etc . With a pair of 60/40 or 70/30 tires that more knarly single track stuff would be even easier . Love the engine sound too . Take care now and see you on the next one .

I’ve got the previous version ATAS with DCT. I wouldn’t go back. If your touring and have to ride through towns or cities, it’s one less thing to think about and no risk of stalling at busy junctions. As you pointed out, the 0 to 60 just puts a big grin on my face and to me, it’s pretty good off road. The drive setting is rubbish - Sport mode ii is where the fun is.

I really hope Honda brings the E clutch technology to the Africa twin. Having written a bike with the clutch, it has all of those benefits of DCT and all of the benefits of a manual transmission for a bike like this Only feature you are omitting with an E clutch is automatic shifting, which many of us don’t really need much anyway. On the CBR 650 it only weighs around 4 pounds so it’s also much lighter than DCT

After being anti-DCT, after a year and half owning one, I’m now a DCT guy. My hate of DCT was born from first impressions via demo-rides and a one full day loner. For reasons beyond this comment, I bought a DCT version and soon learned to hate it more. However . . . after a few months, I learned how to use the thing (I have other bikes) and soon it became my go-to ride. My advice is not to approach it as an “automatic” - after fifty years of riding, my manual shifting muscle memory is plenty automatic and initially got in the way of using the DCT. The other thing I had to learn was that the expertise of Honda’s research and development engineers knew better than I about how DCT works with the rest of the package - no one feature independently operates on its own. Bottom line? If I was going to buy another Africa Twin it’ll be a 2025 Adventure Sports - black - with a 19” front wheel equipped with DCT.
