Kia is “THE BRAND”!, when it comes to Automotive design. Now! If they can make this SUV in an American assembly plant, and get it to market in 2024, they may have a hit on their hands. Contingencies like price, EV mileage, and updates are in this mix as well.

Should be getting built at the new hyundai/Kia metaplant in Savannah Georgia. But not likely until 2025 or 2026. They might just follow volvo and gms examples by importing the Chinese built one's to capture early market share. While legally offsetting some of those 27% tariff loses by exporting the us built evs to other countries. 🤔

When it comes to futuristic design, but not GOOD design. They are trying something inteeresting but need a lot more to refine it, and finalize the design. I like the Gundam mecha style they go towards, but they are stopping halfway, like there is a designer that likes that , and makes these crazy concepts and then the moron chief of design bureau tell him to make something that looks like old cars and puts "his pet" junior designer "to work" on that and ruin it applying old cars elements that don't fit with the Gundam style or don't fit the body itself On this ev5, the bottom part of the front bumper doesn't belong, it looks like copied from other older cars and pasted here, is complete opposite to the top part and no design connection between them. The tail lights are from a completely different vehicle and not mix with this body shape at all. The wheels, they look like they were taken from concept cars from late 80s, early 90s, and made a knockoff off those designs

For what I like Kia/Hyundai very much is that they offer a 230V AC power supply with 3,6kW max. output in there cars and the V2device adapter. Therefore I bought an EV6 instead of a MY, PS2, or Volvo C40. I am using this feature minimum 4 times a week. Only with this possibility a BEV is a REAL BEV in my eyes. A BEV MUST offer the huge enery für external use cases. I changed from a boxy SUV (Volvo XC90) to a Kia EV6. Therefore the EV5 is not an option for me, but I am sure for others.

The model Y has such a sloped back you can't haul much in it. The KIA on the other hand seems much more practical.

My model year 2023 77kWh Ioniq 5 has an SK Innovation battery, not one from LG Chem, and the correct discription for its chemistry is NMC-LiPo, not Turnery. NMC and LFP chemistries both have advantages and disadvantages. Currently all high performance EVs, including Teslas, use NMC chemistry, because NMC can charge (and discharge, but discharging power isn't usually the issue) faster than LFP. Since eGMP is the fastest charging and thus highest performance platform on the market today, it obviously requires NMC batteries. This is important in any market with a somewhat developped and reliable DC fast charging network, since fast charging trumps range every time. The Chinese market is different tho, because over there price trumps everything, LFP is cheaper and the chinese accept its slower charging rate in return. The Koreans aknowledge that and the eGMP platform can deal with it, so they do a Chinese version. I'm pretty sure they also have dedicated chinese software and they cut more corners than just the battery for the China version.

@@eleetgroupvideo The Tesla Model Y is the number one selling car in the world. Not electric car, car period. The Tesla Model Y standard range has LFP chemistry, the long range and performance models NMC.

Agree on LG Chem - recoiled when you mentioned them. Chevy Bolt, iPace even recently and those hyundai/kia issues - they can't seem to get reliable build quality

OTOH, sticking with LG Chem probably means that this will actually be built as well in the US and use US built LG Chem batteries. So qualify for all those incentives. Just maybe, for the rest of the world, and especially rhd markets, they copy Tesla and export those EV5s from China and keep the lfp batteries.

If it's on E-GMP then does that mean 800v fast charging? A smaller SUV that is affordable and can charge decently well in under 20 minutes seems like it would be a great seller.

Charge point in the wrong place for any position charger, mid panel on the side is always wrong. Either front centre or in the very corner edge. Everything else will cause issue.

Because the Koreans started the egmp platform development back in 2017. Around the same time as gm per barra and reuss approve 8 ultium ev platforms for production. Except the Koreans had pouch cells built by their own companies lined up. Gm meanwhile has struggled to get any meaningful reliable locally built ultium pouch cells to put in their big heavy inefficient mostly evs. Ford's farley said much the same he said we know how to build the cars, we know how to build the plants to make them in. But we don't really do software and none of us legacy oems have that in house capability. Plus he said building reliable cells at high run rates is extremely difficult. As they are finding out with the sk innovation plant tie up. I'm surprised he still has a job tbh. 😀 he's dropped more truth bombs on fomoco as a whole than diess did for vag. 👍🏻

if i could use a bev in this format, as a still-eSoul driver, i would prefer a MY. I don't find the EV5 tank visually attractive and I bet it is considerably less efficient than a MY. For my needs now, though, the question is whether an M2, the ZeekrX or the EV3/EV4 will be more readily available and what the prices will be then.

Electric cars in US are about 3% of total units on the road. Worldwide it's estimated to be only 2.3% of total vehicles. Maybe one day they'll be more cost effective and will have an infrastructure to support charging.

It's built by their joint venture with the Jiangsu Yueda Group in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. Dongfeng were originally part of the venture but they pulled out in December 2021. It would make sense to use mostly Chinese made components.

Definitely if they also sell at a good ‚Chinese‘ price here in Europe. Ford‘s Explorer with outdated Volkswagen platform is dead on release and others like BMW, Audi, Skoda, Seat and the ID.4/5, Mercedes EQA and EQB look old against the stylish Kia and certainly a Hyunday in that class. Think for Kia that’s a good move to ramp up high end while producing like other legacy brands the lower segments elsewhere. The capacities are there and Korea is quite near the place for close relationship and communication. China on the other hands desperately needs that business with brands that are already global players and have QC and a reputation for reliable cars😂 Own since May 2022 after lots of mostly German Premium my first EV6 AWD and so far never had any issue and just changed wheels and filled water for windows cleaning. Never ever had any new car that was NOT back to service center after delivery for some problems. So never I regretted my choice and also the whole mix that makes a good car is fabulous including TCO. No joke and see Sandy Munros tear down of the Ioniq 5 to understand why they are near to Tesla as nobody else at the moment. Even Mercedes starts to copy and Porsche is seemingly on board also with the ties around Mate Rimac of Rimac-Bugatti. All that used 800 Volt and high quality SiC, sports cars suspension and many more they even don’t speak so much about.🤔🤓🇨🇭

Interesting Sam but you should know that Kia have never used LG batteries. The battery in my e-Niro and the Soul are from SK. Since the EGMP platform came out (Ioniq 5, 6 and Kia EV6) the HMG group have gone with SK for all their batteries. SK claim that they have not had one single fire in the 2 million EV batteries they have supplied. This they say is because of their Z-fold technology which greatly reduces the risk of thermal runaway. I have tried to check these claims and have found no reason to doubt them. LFP surely has a big advantage in terms of lower cost and even lower fire risk but to all intents and purposes an NMC battery will outlive the car it is in.

The EV5 AWD will be our second Kia besides the somewhat bigger EV6 AWD. The EV9 is too big for two persons and a dog most of the time. We also like that there is some Volvo in, but just a bit fancier - we like the design very much and the tech specs sound interesting! Let’s see how it comes to Europe.

If everything was comparatively equal in the EV world and exterior and interior were the final determination, I would never own a Tesla. When I first saw the EV6, I was like now that is a good looking EV inside and out. So yes, based on looks I would own this over a Tesla Model Y. As a matter of fact this is the hot suv shape/look right now. Kia Tellurides are hot sellers for being ICE only vehicles.

Come on Sam, stop harping on the LG battery thing. I have not heard of any recalls in the last 1.5 years. Have you? I used to own a Hyundai Kona which had the LG battery recalled, but that did not stop me from buying a Hyundai Ioniq 5, even if it would have had an LG Chem battery. I don't care if i does as long as it is safe. That said once a company has had a recall and fires don't you think they'd double down on QA & QC. Keep it in mind the batteries of the Bolt and the Kona and possibly the Jags were made in China at the Nanjing factory. They had discovered a robot problem that was not programmed correctly resulting in an incorrectly folded tab on the Anodes. Please don't slam a whole companies efforts with bias because of a local fires. I think you nee to offer a bit more research before condemning recent LG batteries.

The Niro EV was just not enough of a change to warrant the upgrade. Just looking for faster charging, improve battery chem, VTG capability and improved styling and ride. Don’t need a the space of a wheeled living room. Not much really I suppose ! 😂😂😂

Kia doesn’t use lg chem. hyundai does. For korea it will equip the ev5 with a li-ion battery pack from Sk inno as it has always done. For china and the rest of the world: byd blade battery.

if the fundamentals aren't good i.e. doesn't have a LFP battery than it's not worth buying for such an expensive price, and also the worry that the Colbalt might not come from ethical sources e.g. could involve child labor.

Recharging Li-Ion batteries to 100% SOC will not hurt them if you're going to use that top 20% within a few hours. What really damages them is leaving them fully recharged for days before travelling. The very worst regime would be to keep recharging to 100% and only going down to 80%. Dr. Euan McTurk, a battery expert, talks about this in several videos on KZbin. The best routine, and the greatest cumulative range endurance for the battery is running from 80% to 20% regularly, with occasional excursions to 100%, which helps to keep the battery balanced, and lower than 20% when necessary. There is no doubt that LFP cells are significantly more robust than Li-Ion cells, but be careful of adopting the misconception that ternary batteries give you a shorter range than LFP. For the same available capacity, both deliver roughly similar ranges, and if anything, the LFP gives a slightly shorter range because of the additional weight of the cells, at present.

Also, 100% on the dash is usually 96-98% on the actual battery. They do that to increase longevity and decrease warranty claims.

Bit of a shame the car is so big. Kia definitely needs a hatchback about 4.4m long as a successor to the Niro EV in order to compete against things like the ID.3, whatever BYD decides to get serious about internationally and an upcoming Model 2. The Niro EV is a reasonable and perfectly nice somewhat boring car but is built using a compromised platform also suitable for ICE and PHEV. Charging is slow compared to the EV6. The Infotainment system is showing its age and don‘t get me started ranting about the pedestrian styling.

Only reason Kia and Hyundai are using batteries from China is that they could not buy them from LG, SK and Samsung. The Sale records for kia ev9 so sucks that you can get this car after 5~7 days if you want to buy. Now Hyundai will get LG battery around 2yrs later.

☝️😏.. electric cars show great promise,, but the infrastructure across the country doesn't exist. Yet. Also battery technology is advancing so fast that what you buy today will be junk in the future. I like Hyundai and Kia. My next EV will have LFP or M3P or equivalent battery chem. My 2013 MYLR (Perl) has NCA, I think, and because I trust Tesla’s battery management software (BMS) I’m fine with it and plan to keep it forever, though the wife is less happy, I think she’ll eventually come ‘round, but Perl will forever be banned from parking in an attached garage.

lg chem has the worst batteries and has high thermal runaway, in Indian market most of the ev using LG batteries had burned up and now they have decided to ditch the battery.

Hit or miss... miss or hit... none of them. It will sell reasonably but not fantastically. To me, its design has nothing outstanding. I prefer the volvo ex30

Meh I don't like it - it looks like big, chinese, boxy thing... why we can just take ICE family hatchback look and just insert electric motors and battery with 500 km distance and quick charge? Like 2012-15 i30 which look great. Kia ceed 2012-2018, Honda jazz, VW golf... why lidars, why electric boot opening - keep it simple.

Looks a bit alike Japanese k-car - boxy. In Japan small boxy k-car makes sense because of low parking space and used for a short range low speed drives. I doubt that this car will be a success worldwide - it seems not efficient (looks heavy, waste of resources and energy?). But that's just my opinion 👍 Time will tell ⏲
