It looks good in my opinion, except I wouldn't know its a Lotus unless I looked at the badge. And I would make the front look a bit lower to the ground and not so bulky and "crossover"-esque.

For me, I think that’s is a seriously good looking car that ticks all the boxes. Comparing a life style 4 doors car to a small 2 seats sports car is absurd. By the way, for me the rear does look like a Lotus, and it’s more inviting than an ICE in the interior.

The reason for low sales figures is that the factory was retooling. FYI: The Eletra is selling well. 2 months ago ~500 were sold in Netherlands alone.

I personally don’t really mind the design. Sure I could be better. However I’m happy to see Lotus making a move to be more prominent.

0:10 I can answer that question: the Lotus sports cars are still designed and built in Hethel. The consumer cars on the other hand are being built in China. They claim that they’re still being designed and engineered in Hethel, but I find that to be a dubious statement Edit: and they’re being designed for the Chinese market while maintaining some key players at Lotus who would have never let this happen. But at the same time, it seems like Volvo and Polestar enjoy lots of freedom from Geely to just do whatever they please, so maybe it is just a Lotus thing. I don’t fucking know. All I know is that Lotus’s push upmarket, while a great thing that I applaud them for, should never have come at the expense of their soul and their standards, even if it’s only being felt in their consumer cars. I get the feeling that Lotus is trying to be a Porsche competitor (which is amazing, and they should do that if they’re pushing upmarket), and if they’re doing that, they need to figure out a direction to go in and push hard in that direction. The Evija and Emira, as well as Lotus’s marketing, all agree on that direction: being pure drivers’ cars. And if that is the direction they choose, then they may still continue with bringing the quality of their cars up, and it would be a welcome change, but the design language and the engineering need to reflect that driver centralism. It needs to be clear that Lotus puts the driver first in everything that they do, even in their consumer cars. They’ll lose out on a few sales from those who aren’t super hardcore, and that’s okay. But it gives them direction and a reason to buy them over over cars in their segment. Bring LiDAR to other EVs, and leave the massive touch screens to them too. It does not belong in a Lotus. Let other cars get cameras in place of mirrors. They have no place in a Lotus. Electrically assisted steering can go into any other EV, *but not into no damn Lotus*

The reason for all of this is simple: Geely buys brands for brand identity/recognition, no other reason. They bought Lotus so that they can have a brand name that carries some weight and has the potential to be effectively marketed as "European Luxury Brand" in China. And since it's China where the new money is all about the show, not interested in a brand's values/tradition as long as it communicates the message "expensive" these cars will sell like hotcakes over there.

@@barbarusbloodshed6347 if that is the case, then explain Volvo and Polestar. Volvo has a reputation among ppl for not being desirable and generally being seen as not good cars, AND Polestar has been their performance division that’s really only been known within the realm of motorsport, yet Geely still bought them out. And on top of that, as I think about it, Volvo and Polestar don’t conform to Chinese design standards. They’re very strong in their design language, maintaining that Scandinavian design from since before they were acquired. Lotus on the other hand IS confirming to those Chinese standards, and even within that realm, it’s only for the consumer cars. The sports cars are still being designed and built in Hethel, including the Evija and potentially the type 135, and it shows. The Emira and Evija still maintain that quintessential Lotus feeling. It’s only the consumer vehicles that are generic. It would suggest to me that it’s an intentional design decision to attempt to sell more vehicles, and they’re damn good vehicles at that, even if they’re the farthest thing from Lotuses (yes, I can say that those cars are good cars but not Lotuses; no, you cannot tell me otherwise), which as much as I hate it, if it can keep Lotus making cool sports cars, then I can accept it. After all, something like this that’s a bit more conservative and luxurious will be guaranteed to rake in the sales. I just hope that in the future, as Lotus’s future becomes secured, their consumer cars will veer more closely to their core design ethos than veer so far away from it like they’re doing right now

How to completely miss the point, Lotus have never built cars like these before, for a first attempt the results are pretty decent, on the other hand look at how awful Porsche's first attempt to build an SUV with 911 styling was, you can also say the same with the Panamerica.

An EV doesn't have to look bulky at all. To the contrary. Look at the bulky Panamera vs. the sleek and beautiful Taycan. It's a very low sedan/estate!

I personally think this is one of the best looking cars this year. It makes a difference seeing it in person. The only problem with design/beauty/symmetry are those double daytime running lights

I think the engineering part is the reason why it’s design that way. Quite sure it’s the limitation and constriction from the shared platform and that platform is already built. But the headlight sucks, why two ?? Are there 2 eyebrow creature out there?

Those hidden headlights need to sit at a minimum height, higher in the US than in EU. Probably what makes the front look heavy and awkward.

It looks good and bad at the same time. Front and back are not connected in their design language but do look beautiful to me. The issue is the side profile and it feels like a KIA or something which ruins the magic of a Lotus

I think the Emeya looks good, even if it doesn't meet the textbook standards of great car design and line flow. I do agree about the bulk. But is it EV design? Or is it increasing safety regulations? Seems like it could be the latter. And with the amount of people making TikToks while driving these days... 🤷

If they made the front lights look softer and calmer, lowered the splitter a bit and made the rear more dramatic it would be great, but hey, electric SUVs don't look good with softness and aggressiveness. because there are no ventilation lines for the engine and the interior is boring

This is an amazing looking car. I think you just want an excuse to use your photoshop and your s pen or whatever to make lines on the car and have something to talk about. That's a trash take, sir. Besides, this is 4-door sedan, and comparing it to the 2 door Emira is just not right.

If you look at it from the perspective of Lotus having a traditional signature design language then yes, this is pretty bad but really, Lotus has never really had a design language that's considered a signature for them, Lotus has always just built whatever they think looks cool and purposeful and I think they're still doing that now, with this, except, I think this is more being designed to sell to a market, specially China, rather than speak to enthusiasts. Personally, I think it looks cool but it doesn't speak to me, it feels very kit car like, very designed by an AI without feeling. It could be anything by anyone, nothing about it says Lotus, but it's not being sold to me so what do I care.

Remember who own Lotus nowadays Geely and who also own Volvo + Polestar and more. The only way Lotus can survive in the supercar/ hypercar niche is through the ownership of a larger player in the automotive industry. So officially the Emira is the last model with a combustion engine. Hopefully someone at Geely will understand that not every Lotus fan prefers the coming electric vehicles. Hopefully they'll recognize in the future that there's still a market for both combustion and electric vehicles and maybe there's a chance that we'll be some models with the choice between combustion or electric powered cars. But i personally don't find their new electric suv's ugly compared to many other electric vehicles on the market. I hope the brand can thrive under Geely!

You mentioned Mercedes at the end, whilst talking about EV interiors. The new CLE concept interior looks amazing. Then again, I like the look of the Emeya and don't like the Emira, although admittedly, I don't like the area below the bonnet at the front of the Emeya, but I don't like the rear quarter window on the Emira and the side intake looks disproportionately large, especially because of the side ground detail which makes the side look really short.

Honestly, after seeing the BMW Neue Klasse concept's interior, it basically acted as the last straw when it came to how automakers are approaching interior car design for me. Why do auto manufacturers feel the need to minimize every single detail in the interior of EVs all of a sudden? Why take out buttons and switch, something that functioned just as good, if not better than having nothing but a touchscreen cheaply placed in the middle of the dashboard (in most applications). I don't see the reason for this shift other than to make car interiors look "futuristic" even though it completely strips away all of the personality. It's just a lazy move in my opinion.

The Emeya interior is waaaaay better than the Emira what are you on about. Way more depth and detail. The ambient lighting is built into the forms of the interior as well which os a nice touch. Ive been an early subscriber of yours but this boomer mentality you have with evs is concerning. You have way to much bias against them and you need to do some reflecting.

The Eletra and Emeya are Chinese. The platform is provided by parent company Geely and that's why they don't look like true Lotus designs.

I like the Emeya's interior way more. But I am totally with you reharding the exterior design. It's just off. Fugly even. I do find the Eletre to be a Handsome vehicle however, so this truly feels like a letdown.

I personally think for an EV it's a nice design. Only thing I don't like are the headlights and taillights. The headlights shouldn't be doubled because the top one makes the front too tall. Also I would prefer a continuous LED line instead of these dots. In the back, the taillights are simply too bland and banal. Other than that it's not a bad design, but it's not the Lotus I'd like to see.

This feels more like a transitional period for cars, non of the OEMs know what they're doing so they just copy Tesla. The problem is that Tesla is trying to make as cheap of a car as possible, they are Prius level cars and that just makes every expensive new car look like a Prius from inside. Everyone is cramming as much tech as possible, but I believe that more advanced tech gets, more of it becomes unnoticeable. My thought is that this will all pass in like 5 to 10 years and interiors will return back to organic cozy feeling as pices of EVs come down and OEMs can actually put decent stuff in while tech gets inplemented with some sort of AI that controls most of it and/or is deleted because literally who needs tik tok on a car screen ....

i totally agree with tou dude.this Lotus is no more a european car. chinease lines are screaming loud. you know......this is too sad to see a such important english brand looses it s identity because of commercial issues. but Lotus Brand remains SO BRITISH. AND WE LOVE THIS BRAND.

Beautiful car! Doesn't matter that it doesn't look like a Lotus. These new EVs are all about getting into new segments of affluent buyers. The majority of these couldn't care less about hard core tiny sports cars. Especially not in China. So it works perfectly.

The biggest potential mistake with this car and the Eletra are their price. Lotus doesn't have a strong enough brand in the SUV or sedan market to think they can sell these cars at Porsche prices. If these cars were 35 percent cheaper, this might be the cash cow Lotus needs. However, as it stands, the price is too high for an arguably un-Lotus-like Chinese product. Clearly these EVs are being sold mainly on style, because the same substance can be found elsewhere, such as Polestar, their lower priced sister company. And in the subjective game of design, this may not be a winning strategy, because it takes too many risks, just as the professional opinion in this video has proven. My prediction is that unless Lotus reduces the price of these EVs (due to the fact that so many lower priced EVs with the same substance exist and also because these Lotus EV designs thus far have been polarizing), the brand will be gone in 5 years.

Totally disagree! Nothing seriously wrong with the design of the Emeya. You just don't like EVs. That's it. You will never become a great designer if you don't embrace the future.
