Mazda is really hitting it out of the ball park with this. The interior is amazing, real buttons and no piano black plastics. Inline six and real wheel drive bias. What's not to love about the direction they're going.. ❤

You ask - What's not to love? They named several things not to love. From transmission to software tuning to clunks to pedals to " something" Additionally the info screen is no touch unless you connect your phone to it. You can explore it yourself and find more things not to love to answer your own question. Were you not listening?

@@keytothegate68 it's subjective. I like it, you may not. Good for you. 🤡 In any case, maybe English isn't your first language, so a bit of reading comprehension might do you some good. "what's not to love about the direction they're going." Does that statement refer to this vehicle alone, or where the company is going with these designs, such as the inline six etc? It's amusing how social media attracts all sorts of negative comments from people who don't even understand the comment they're replying to. And yes, I watched the entire video.

thanks for touching on the transmission issues. a few reviewers have mentioned the lag as well. it's a deal breaker personally... transmission responsiveness is crucial to the driving experience
@lukewalker1051
@lukewalker1051 Жыл бұрын
To anybody with even basic sensibility, its a deal breaker, let alone keen automotive enthusiasts. Reason is, there is an industry precedent for bad auto/manual transmissions dating back to the BMW SMG which BMW could never cure. There is more. After the BMW SMG debacle, BMW released the dual clutch auto/manual which was also panned by enthusiasts inspite of BMW engineers spends thousands of hours to get it shift seamlessly. Result? Just announced BMW is going back to 'torque converter' auto transmission in all their cars including M cars. Mazda, in the case of the in-line 6, albeit directionally correct from a design philosophy standpoint...straight six architecturally is a great engine...however the new engine is completely unvetted. Mazda's first foray with this format. Mazda is reinventing the wheel at the consumer's expense. Nobody knows what kind of durability performance this engine will provide because its unproven. Most brand new engines have design flaws and some are unrecoverable. The transmission issue however is 'blatant' which btw may even be rooted in a design flaw on a conceptual level because Mazda has taken a 'flyer' aka departure from conventional transmission designs, jn particular to satisfy the hybrid motor requirement. Even the best designed dual clutch transmissions without the complication of an electric motor that BMW designed and released, BMW being driveline experts and producing some if not thee very best powertrains in the world had driveability challenges, the worst dating back to BMW's SMG which caused the consumer thousands of dollars in payout and BMW millions due to inability to make it perform properly for any duration. Class action lawsuit. Most older SMG cars have now either been scrapped or converted to manual shift cars...like early M3's.

@@mikekim1854 Apple to apple, if you prefer MDX go for it, Mazda CX90 in top trim offers, a lot more. Almost fast as the MDX S type and a lot cheaper. I6 plus rear drive oriented frame, BMW copied for reason, when comes to huge vehicles called SUV, this type of combination giving best result when comes to driving. I'm not saying about moving from point A to point B but about fun drive. Personal opinion which one is nicer from outside, but plastic fantastic in MDX plus too busy dashboard just eliminates MDX. Great review Guys as usual. The Cx-90 is truly a spectacular SUV for the $$$$$ for sure. I have not driven it, I have a 22 MDX Advance (leased in 8/2021) which I truly enjoy and has been completely Trouble free with only 12K miles on it. Pertaining to your comments about Mazda addressing the "software" issues with the TCM /ECU causing hesitation and /or abrupt shifts, I'll tell a brief story. In 2010, I leased an Infiniti G37X (replaced my 2007 G35X - which to that date was the best car I ever had at 56 years old then). That year Infiniti just came out with their new 7spd Auto Tranny. Although I test drove the car very briefly (same 3.5 Liter engine as the G35X), when I drove it home form the dealership with a smile on my face .....suddenly I said WTF was that!! It was Laggy, and felt like the old OD auto trannys in my Pontiac. I called the Saleslady the next day, and she told me to bring it in the following day. The service Tech and Manager said to me: That 's the way they drive!! There's Nothing Wrong. I learned to play with the throttle a little to minimize that Lagginess. But it was far from the G35X (with a 5 spd AT). I started Blogging on an Infiniti's Owner site and found it was pretty common complaint. I brought that car back to service numerous times and had 2 Techs and a Regional Manager take drives with me where they attached a Laptop to the Car's CPU to try to measure the issues. They couldn't. Then suddenly about two years after griping, Infiniti issues a Software Update to the CPU /TCM - that bad made the ride much better, not perfect, but better. My dealer (pepe Infiniti in White Plains, NY - the largest in the NE USA), complimented me! They said, because my constant griping (and many others too, but I was the most Ardent one), Infiniti responded and issued this Update. This only served to prove how much cars are Computer driven - changing engine Timing, Tranny shifts, etc. PS.. whne that leased ended about a year later, I took a new 2013 Infiniti M37X. All the Tranny Bugs were gone.... That was the best Car I ever had, surpassing the 2007 G35X. It had near Audi handling, Steering responsiveness, comfortable ride, and a decent height for a Sports Sedan - easy to enter and exit the car. It was the Best Value compared to the Audi A6, The BMW, Acura, and MB competitive models , by far, yet I saw very few on the road in my vicinity. I should have Bought that car at lease expiration, but did not and got a SUV. That's another story.

Just tried one and loved it. The ride is just perfect (for such a large vehicle) no body roll and the suspension felt exactly right to me, even on rough roads, so does the steering, frankly I don't understand Zack's attitude about it. However I did feel the "lag" but didn't mind it much, I was told at the dealership that Mazda would eventually provide a software fix to make it better. I drove the GT trim and it felt so much more luxurious than the Honda Pilot Touring I went to see just after, Honda is not even close. This is way cheaper the an MDX yet the interior is just a luxurious (and imo more tasteful) and has better performance. I don't need 3 rows to I will look at the cx70 and I can't wait. Good job Mazda.

I've got this strong impression in a nutshell: Basically, the CX90 is essentially a MDX equivalent @ Pilot's price range. or a Lexus RX/TX equivalent @ Highlander/Grand Highlander price range. Unlike Honda group and Toyota group, Mazda sales volume is too small to maintain a separate premium brand like Acura and Lexus. So when Mazda does a premium product, it has no choice but to invest the budget on the product itself instead of investing in luxury branding/dealership experiences.

Great review. I feel that the transmission issues may be a result of it being a new model and design. Give Mazda time to adjust the settings on the transmission. As for the steering, I'm one of those who likes a heavier feeling steering. One of the first cars I drove, 44 years ago, was my parent's 1977 Peugeot 504 Diesel. I loved how the car went where it was pointed. Mazda is the same. I love the feeling of the steering in the four Mazdas that I've driven (2016 Mazda3 hatchback, 2018 CX-5 AWD, 2020 CX-5 FWD, and 2023 CX-50). As for pronunciation, as far back as I can recall, here in the USA it has always been pronounced "Mahzda." But I'm also one of those in the USA who pronounces the Kia Sportage like a Canadian. Maybe that's because I went to sleep away camp in Algonquin Park (Sportage rhymes with portage).

Agree Stuart. As an automotive engineer since Mazda just invented their version of a dual clutch transmission with no torque converter, you should buy one of these and see if Mazda can develop software patches to make shifting more seamless. If they can't, which is most likely because there is only so much software can do to refine transmission shift quality, you will be a sucker for being an early adopter with a known design flaw all automotive reviewers have reported. Shame on Mazda, who are not transmission experts, to create their own transmission and expect the public to embrace it when it has substandard shift quality. Mazda, wanting to 'be best in class' and failing miserably at the customer's expense. Btw, for the uninitiated, that is called the manufacturer performing beta testing on their consumer base. Generally doesn't go very well....like Microsoft 8 or Vista. A beautifully styled vehicle...Mazda has an excellent design office.

I’m very impressed. Very impressed. At $65,000 this a great deal (Acura MDX A-spec, any German premium SUV or even a loaded Palisade/Telluride). At $45,000! for a stripper (GS) its an even better deal. It’s main, perhaps only competition, might be Toyota’s ever-so-predictable (boring?) Highlander. This new capricious approach by both Mazda’s design and engineering departments might be onto something. And I like it. Thanks for the video.

We drive vechile for 10 years as main driver and then keep it for next 10 as secondary vechile. Almost any normal repair or parts replacement will probably need the in line 6 pulled to do them thus labor costs will be extremely high.

We test drove this a few days ago. Car looked beautiful, is affordable, and drove beautifully, customer service was amazing, with no upselling, and they didn't even ask for our info when sending us off to test drive! BUT the lack of storage options was just so sad. I could see my family making the worst mess simply due to the lack of cubbies. There will be toys strewn everywhere, food packaging on the floor, barely any room for a third water bottle. I just couldn't do it. I couldn't see myself spending this much $$$ and getting frustrated with the lack of space during every drive.

I am not in the market for a CX-90, but may be for the CX-70. But Mazda has to get the issues with the 8-speed/new wet clutch setup sorted before I'd even consider it. Even then I may not consider it. We have a 2023 CX-5 Signature and transmission on it is fabulous. Maybe not the quickest shifting, but it's still pretty quick, smooth, and kind of bullet proof. If you have to go off road with it you don't have the jerkiness the wet-clutch setup has because it has a torque converter. There are only three things we are left wanting for with our CX-5. Better MPG. A bit more passenger/cargo room and more useful/plentiful storage like Toyota's have. The CX-70 will delivery that, but it's this all new 8 speed that scares me.

As a current Mazda CX9 owner, frankly speaking CX90 is comprehensively improved, but only 2 Negatives points stopped my upgrade plan. 1: The second row headroom space is more narrow than CX9. 2: 8AT transmission shifting gears is frustrating than CX9 6AT, especially 1-2-3. Slower gear changes than CX9 6AT as well. Hopefully Mazda could hear about this and improve it.

I agree 100% that I wish we'd get reviews of the volume seller for vehicles, not the top trim fully loaded that only 2% of the market is going to purchase. I will say that I actually don't mind a car that doesn't downshift quickly. I think a car that holds its gears can be smoother and deliver better mpg.

When you guys mentioned the slight delay on acceleration with the transmission, I've run into that same issue with my 2018 Mazda 6 GT, which only has their traditional 6 speed automatic that they've been making for years. A couple of times I had to bury the throttle to get out of the way of a car coming at me when pulling out, and it seemed to take a couple of seconds to downshift and launch forward. Those seconds seemed like an hour and I thought I was going to get nailed. Still love my 6, though. But that is something that definitely is in their transmission design, regardless of whether it is the six or 8 speed, and is concerning to me. It was very observant and astute of you to point that out. I don't think I've ever heard of another review mentioning that.

The best value trim in Canada IMHO is the base trim GS, no moonroof so more headroom and no problems down the road, smaller screen, cloth interior which is more comfortable and easier to look after, manual liftgate at the back which is also avoiding issues down the road. Then you can use the savings on an extended Mazda warranty which looks like it may be needed for this drivetrain.

The CX-90 is an amazing vehicle. However, considering the length of the vehicle, I think Mazda could have packaged this to offer tons of passenger space and cargo space, while keeping the luxury and driving feel. Had they addressed that, this could have easily been the best-seller for Mazda, and in the Top 4 for best selling in the segment. Actually maybe make it as long as a Traverse so both the V6 and those 2 issues could have been addressed.

I understand the larger electric motor in the PHEV CX-90 helps smooth out the shifting so it will be interesting to see if that's true when you get one of those for a longer test. Great review as usual! I don't know guys, the most common US pronunciation (mahzdah or mawzdah) is closest to the Japanese! Matsuda (mahtsoodah or mawtsoodah) Just sayin' 😉 Later edit: such a good discussion--elephant in the room topic not (or only very briefly) touched on by most revuewers--on the missing 2nd row bench on upper trims. I've long suspected the reason you mentioned, at least the maker's claimed reason... but I don't buy it entirely, namely because of your Honda mention. Also, among the few, Pathfinder can be optioned with the bench on the top trim. While it's corporate stablemate QX60 cannot, you can option the next trim down to be very close--missing only the aniline leather and two-tone black roof remaining exclusive to the top trim. Then when you do that box checking, it would appear like it should be the same-or more-as the top trim with just the captains... So what (really) gives, manufacturers? If--from what they're saying anyway-- they're having to parse these towing, Etc, weight targets so closely so as to omit important feature like this, perhaps they need to be addressing it in a different way, I E engineering/design from the get-go. Methinks this is perhaps also the reason, along with "cost-savings," of so many vehicles omitting the spare tire anymore.

Mazda wants a "direct" and responsive transmission feel here, but I keep finding reviews that single out noise or driveline jerk with 1-2 upshifts and 2-1 downshifts under light throttle or light braking. Gorgeous car, but the transmission's lack of a torque converter (resorting to a dual clutch type engine-trans coupling) unfortunately means the driver is going to feel certain pulses, shudders, and shift shock... which might otherwise be subdued or imperceptible with a TQ fluid coupling.

In the video you mention the fuel mileage was less than reported. On the stats it was 23 city and 28 highway mpg. That seems to be pretty close to what the manufacturer lists. Was the actual mileage different? With premium fuel at $5/gal it might make the PHEV version more attractive.

Another great review. While CX-90 remains a great car. I still think Mazda can make it a bit longer, in order to appeal to a more mainstream consumer base. That's a smarter approach as Mazda is a small carmaker, which doesn't have the resources of Honda and Toyota. While Toyota can afford both Highlander and Grand Highlander, Mazda is only for one CX-90, even if its their cash cow. Heavier steering feedback could be a good thing. Does anyone remember those classic "E designation" BMW? I actually like my Civic Sport's slightly heftier steering weight, while remains responsive and have excellent feel/feedback.

The higher trim is still a great bargain! The CX 70 comes with a second-row bench, and it's virtually the same vehicle as the CX90. I have a dog and want the second-row bench with the optional Mazda pet seat sling. Zoom, Zoom, Zoom! The 70 has more storage since it lacks a third row. The Pilot is 5 inches wider, so consider your garage and the other car parked there. It is relatively underpowered for its weight. I like the Atlas but don't like the 4-banger turbo. It seems like a small engine for such a beast, and that spells trouble. Plus, there are no buttons or knobs on the dash. Everything is accessed through the touch screen and that means extra steps which is annoying and unsafe. The Telluride is just a straight V6 sans turbo or hybrid boost. But it is really heavy. Its weight-to-horsepower ratio is rather low, which means poor acceleration. Plus, it's expensive. Wanted to like the Highlander, but, like the Atlas, I can't get past the small turbo 4 hybrid. Like the Telluride, it is underpowered for its weight.
