Indeed. I’d pick a bulletproof rumbling I4 diesel over some city-boy V6 that’s “quieter” any day. The proof is in the pudding, and that engine and brand works in commercial vehicles like almost nothing else. So given the classic simpler design of the vehicle and inherent reliability of a well founded, Japanese, commercial vehicle diesel engine, and the fact that compared to the utes of yore these modern ones are luxury, I’d pick an Isuzu any day. Besides, the sound is part of the fun with diesels. That’s how you know the engine is working.

@@CharlesLeyton-eh5ex What is your tow rating on your Hilux? We have to be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 in 30 seconds (35 seconds for DRWs) at maximum tow rating, so most pickups sold here in North America are much quicker when empty and not towing. My F450 (9,200 lbs empty) does 0 to 100km/62mph somewhere between 6 and 6.5 seconds. The lighter F250 with the same engine is under 6s.

Go the DMAX! On the engine, I think sometimes there's too much emphasis put on 'the number'.. imo sure you could wind up the 4jj3 (plenty of high power examples after market) but reliability and longevity will ultimately suffer. I've had mine at GVM on some big trips (inc Cape York) and have never thought sheesh and extra 50nm would be nice.. I'm taking reliability every day of the week. 👍

And in practice, the torque is a fair bit higher than on paper, which makes sense given the inherent design of the engine, and it being of a more classically simple design of vehicle, as well as Japanese, it’s bloody bulletproof in reliability, which I’ve seen firsthand. If the donk works for Isuzu commercial vehicles, it most certainly works for a ute. TLDR; in a mad-max sort of world, a D-Max would be the dual cab Ute to go for, I reckon.

Post covid inflation on raw materials has gone through the roof. Australian government takes a fair whack through stamp duty and taxes. I’ve just clocked 4000kms with the new Dmax, and very happy with it overall. One issue I’ve had is the steering wheel has been slightly off centred within a couple of days of getting the vehicle, and hadn’t done any off-roading. Got a wheel alignment but issue still resides. In saying that, Dealership has been very helpful and will take it back in to get another look. Secondly, the emergency breaking can be very frustrating as it activates randomly at times even when you slow down behind other vehicles safely. But understand it’s essential for all new vehicles in achieving the five star ANCAP rating. Overall, very satisfied. My personal highlights is that it’s a very comfortable drive, its and newly added software features and quick response time.

An interesting test you should consider adding is a repeated brake test to see how brake fade affects the performance. A vehicle that brakes well once may not continue to brake well after repeated hard brake applications in short succession, such as when coming down a mountain range

@rich7447
@rich7447 4 ай бұрын
If you are towing much weight down a mountain range you really should have something with an exhaust brake or retarder. You really want to be able to set your speed and not have to touch the brakes. That being said, it is a good idea to know how much fade you get from multiple brake applications. I lost trailer brakes (about 14,000 lb trailer at the time - was on I-68 in Western Maryland) due to a broken wire and didn't realize until I was already on a long down grade. The exhaust brake did most of the heavy lifting and the low speed limit kept me from getting in deep before realizing that my trailer brakes were out. Had minimal brake fade even though the trailer was pushing me and I could smell the brakes by the time I got stopped. This was the closest that I have come to having to use an escape ramp and I no longer go above 80% of the manufacturers advertised tow rating. At the time I was at about 87.5% of the rated towing capacity, and I realized that I needed a bigger truck.

Ive an early 2024 Dmax (pre upgrade). Hate the piano black, it’s just a dust attracter. Have they upgraded rear camera resolution? Also the front collision alert? It’s so sensitive! Bluetooth phone is also pretty poor, one of the worst qualities I’ve had. They also need to “up tune” it, I had to add a throttle controller as it was so lazy. Makes a world of difference. However, I tow 2000 kegs regularly and do about 70,000ks a year (done 54,000 so far) and tows without effort and very comfortable. Just seems they have so much more potential in the tune.

I’ve got the new one. The new interior is better but does attract dust to some extent. The whole driver aid stuff is not only a total pain in the ass, it’s still a genuine hazard and Isuzu don’t care. It’s a box ticking exercise for ANCAP and nothing else. The throttle is fine now but the transmission shift and lock up strategy is worse IMO. There’s a couple of tuners in the eastern states now offering a TCM remap though. Hope that helps 😊

Just putting it out there. Hopefully the new model has changed, but the centre console under the aircon controls, has a gap at the edge closest to gear shift lever, which in our case we almost lost a wedding ring, due to a usual "swipe up" motion with hand when grabbing something like a card for example. The ring was pushed through this gap, somehow ended up sitting jammed between a piece of carpet and a wire. Was a "last chance before giving up" decision to pry open the console plastics, and with a torch, found it deep back toward the engine bay. Coins or anything that has a thing flatl surface will disappear easily.

Personally, I like the old-school design of the D-MAX. It’s a design that’s tried and true, reliable, and strong. It may be a bit too utilitarian for people born in big cities who drive luxury cars, but that doesn’t matter, as that’s not the kind of people utes are for. I’ll take the simple, sturdy, dependable ute over a luxury model with electronic diddles that short out of you so much as breathe on them, any day. Ockham was right; the simplest approach is often the best.

I personally think all Utes are about $20k over priced. We choose an X Terrain as Toyota stopped selling the Rouge when we went to order. We liked the D Max wireless Apple carplay but as soon as you plug the phone in, it stops working after you unplug, so it’s no better than a Hilux. I’m glad they put a volume knob back in, digital buttons are horrible. I hope they fixed the sun visors, had both replaced under warranty and the drivers side is starting to get loose again. Not enough tie down points in the tray. The engine could do with a little more power but it’s ok. Some plastic surfaces scratch. Reverse camera works well, parking sensors are great, autonomous emergency braking needs refinement as it can aggressively brake when you are not expecting it to. Speed sign camera needs refinement. Last, our gearbox was knocty moving between park and neutral, was told it was how I park, but after the last service, it now works ok and as I expect it too🤷🏼. Overall, I don’t mind the Ute, it’s doing the job and looks great when it’s clean.

3-4 month waiting list though.. I ordered mine a month ago and still no updates. The remote start is what won me over after getting out of a 10 year old VF Ute that had that option.. its a godsend in Summer and Winter one cant go back to 40+ or 0 degree temps in the cabin ... ;) The wireless charging pad is actually available as an option but I'm not a fan as I had one on a hire car in the states and it basically cooked my phone as its always on and charging... And how is 130Kph the max ? Isn't there unlimited roads in the NT ?

Here in Europe it comes with a 1.9L Turbo. The Navara and L200 (Triton) aren't available, the Ranger and Amarok come with a 2L engine with a wet belt. Huge pass. Would stick with the ancient Hilux, with the 2.4L engine.

Replace the tub “sports bar” with something useful. I’ve a 2023 XT and the Sports Bar and side steps are visual and for city people. Just purchased another DMax but mid level with a canopy (wife has the XT) went with another 2023 as dealers are making room for the 2024 models, so saved a few $k. My biggest issue with new vehicles is their “safety” technology. It literally makes them LESS safe! Automatic braking because the vehicle “thinks” you’re going to have a collision? How about I make that decision. When my new DMax arrives, I’ll be removing most of the “safety” features.

I have the MUX but I dont remember trying both at the same time. If you can turn on both at the same time in the 2024 Dmax....thats a new feature! Amazing updates and also being a great competitor against other Utes . My dad bought an 2023 3.0 td Isuzu d max v cross . And we managed to stage 1 tune it too 223hp and 514nm of torque . I personally like the exterior on the older models more but the electronical aswell as the new features are better . Since my dad did not get a 4x4 option we wont experience much heavy off roading . But we went on a offroading track Test recently and it performed really well compared to 4x4s . But I would love to hear your opinion on my take.
