Fun fact - McCarthy attempted only three go balls from the far hash the entire season. Not saying that he can't make the throws, but the eval is just really really really hard because of the offense he was in.

One of my favorite things about combine week is just all the rumors that get started/spread due to all the teams being there and talking to eachother. So a video about what you guys hear just by being there could be fun, whether it be prospects people love/hate more than expected or FA/trade rumors

I have always been interested in the draft, but I've really come to LOVE the draft process over the last 2 years and most of it is because of watching you guys since the 1st pod! I was posting Madden rebuilds and what not on my KZbin channel, then I started making and using draft classes on Madden for the videos, starting with last year's class. Then I was going through the whole draft this year and as time went on I was just really enjoying myself as I was learning more and more about the class! Now I have tape (given, it's very limited) and just trying to dive deeper, do rankings and do the work. I'm currently 17 and never really found what I wanted to do for a living other than content creation. I've done an okay job in my opinion up to this point, but definitely not to the point where I KNOW I can live off of it. GENERALLY, I'm saying I appreciate the 6'4, 240 lbs men you guys are, along with A LOT of other people! Also was curious If you guys know any way to get a hold of tape for your "Average Joe" just trying to put in the work, and any tips or advice that really helped you guys early on? Again, I love watching the pod, there's no one better in the industry and you guys are truly AMAZING!

This comment RULES. First of all, thank you so much for hanging out with us since episode one!! That’s incredible. Second, love how you got into the draft space. Tbh my love for the draft also stemmed from the Madden world. The fascination of “what if” came to life in those 2000-2010 Maddens. As for the tape, I wish I had a better answer for y’all (because so many of you ask bc you have such a passion for it). We get it all through PFF, and college A22 is hard to come by. Unfortunately you kinda have to know someone who has it. For you to be where you are already at such a young age and loving it is so cool to hear. Keep being unique! We’ll always be here to help where we can!

Caleb massively overrated but at same time is a franchise qb. I think Russ Wilson a far better comp than Patrick mahomes though tbh. Not bad considering what Russ was but leaves a bad taste hearing it now. The guy will struggle with turnovers between fumbles and ints first year if I have to guess, only because holds the ball far to long and plays hero ball abit. If I were a bears fan I’d want them to trade back to 3 take mhj and maybe bolster the oline or def later on

Man, that Michael Pratt scouting report sounded really similar to Brock Purdy's coming out ( you mentioned this at the end). I'll be curious to see how he does, maybe more credit needs to be given to players who have lots of experience, play well with anticipation, can scramble a bit and are accurate with touch even if they dont have great physical measurables. Theses throws you need to be able to make to be an elite NFL QB don't seem to come up in practice as much as in theory. As Purdy has shown, anticipation can make up for a big arm a bit to make the outside throws too.

If Pratt didn’t have the drop off in accuracy he did after his injury, I’d be VERY intrigued by him as a Top 50 guy. I am a sucker for guys who can throw with that kind of touch. Jokes aside, I don't think him at QB2 would be that crazy. He 100% would benefit from sitting for a bit to develop, but I could easily see him end up being the second best QB in the class a few years from now. Both Maye and Daniels have decent bust potential. Maye due to pocket awareness and inconsistent accuracy and Daniels...well, we'll have to see how well he can play in structure without an all star team of an offense around him.

Rattler in switching from Air Raid at OU to Pro Style at SC has already experienced the growing pains of that transition and the fact he did it in college means he probably won't have to suffer through them in the NFL. Rattler is as you say versatile, he's played both the Air Raid and the Pro Style, this helps for in game adjustments. He's already played from under center and the fact he's experienced adversity both on and off the field - is a plus moving forward. The fact he made a schematic transition should not be overlooked. Rattler is my QB5 and he goes early day 2.

This is a fascinating case study because, aside from Caleb Williams, it feels like the remainder of the top 6 guys are all very, very close. Here’s how I see it: - Caleb Williams - best pure arm and playmaking talent - Drake Maye - best intangibles - Jayden Daniels - best explosives and rushing - Bo Nix - best accuracy and game management - Michael Penix - best arm strength and pocket passer - JJ McCarthy - jack of all trades, master of none (needs time to develop, as Connor emphasized)
@discostew420
@discostew420 7 ай бұрын
McCarthy is the one with all the intangibles, Drake Maye went 17-9 as a starter. Maye is the Prototype. Size, Arm, pocket presence, physicality. McCarthy is a pure winner. Even in his only loss, he was incredible the last 50 minutes in a shootout game. 27-1 as a starter = intangibles up the wazoo
@timrc417
@timrc417 7 ай бұрын
@@discostew420intangibles have nothing to do with win-loss record, which is a team stat. McCarthy was on one of the most well-rounded teams and had two NFL-caliber runningbacks at his disposal to run his offense, not to mention a stacked offensive line and defense AND two WRs that have shot up the draft boards in the past month. He doesn’t deserve all the credit. Maye was on a far worse team. Both Maye and McCarthy are highly competitive and love the challenge of a tough opponent, but Maye is just bigger and stronger and more of a playmaker from what we’ve seen on tape, hence the better intangibles. He’s the prototypical modern NFL QB of this draft with his size and playstyle. I think they both have a lot of development to be had, but I’m taking Maye over McCarthy any day.
@discostew420
@discostew420 7 ай бұрын
@@timrc417 brother, "bigger and stronger and more of a playmaker" are literally tangible things... Intangibles are the clutch gene, the ability to step up and make plays when your team needs it. Did you watch the Rose Bowl? or Ohio State the last 2 years, or the TCU game after 2 pick 6's, came back and was absolutely spectacular. I don't think McCarthy is the number 1 QB but the narrative on him is wild. He is absolutely a playmaker. Yards per attempt and Air Yards per attempt and turnover rate show he pushes the ball downfield, doesn't make mistakes and does what his team needs to win games. Intangibles. 6'5 230 with a big arm is not intangible.
@Aaron-kj8dv
@Aaron-kj8dv 7 ай бұрын
Drake Maye narrative is a lot like Justin Herbert in college. They nitpicked him to death and then acted shocked when he was pretty good whereas Burrow and Tua they weren't nearly as hard on. Not saying Herbert is better than Burrow because Burrow is top 3 imo but Herbert was under a microscope for some reason.
@timrc417
@timrc417 7 ай бұрын
@discostew420 I apologize for making the argument even remotely about size, as yeah that is very tangible lol. That's on me for the boo-boo. However, I still think Maye stands out more to me as the fiery playmaker of this class. The "win at any cost" guy. Yes, McCarthy took care of the ball much better - which is also a huge deal - but as Connor and Trevor mentioned, Maye didn't really have a choice sometimes. He was forcing throws all year because his offensive line was soup and had to get rid of the ball in an attempt to prevent the play from blowing up. McCarthy had THE best offensive line in football and was able to sit back and cook because of it. I think Maye is the fiery prodigy of this class and McCarthy is his younger brother. McCarthy is absolutely a playmaker, I'm not suggesting otherwise. He deserves some credit, but I don't think it's fair to Michigan to say that he's the reason they won the Natty this year. It's like Brock Purdy on the Niners; he didn't lose them games, but he also didn't win them (I'll give him the Ohio State games from 2022 and last season. He balled out in those games). (For the record, I'm not saying McCarthy = Purdy. They are very different QBs and I think McCarthy will be a better QB if he has some time to develop). Again, he had the best runningback tandem and offensive line in the country and had a defense that stifled opponents and made up for his mistakes when they happened. As far as the narrative goes, I think a lot of people just wished they had seen more. He has fleeting glimpses of his potential because he never had to be "the guy." His sample size for playmaking and eye-popping throws is like a quarter of the size of everyone else in this draft except for like Bo Nix. That's what makes him a tricky eval and ultimately a risky draft choice. He very well could be the best QB in this class, but nobody knows because he hasn't had to show it.

I had Travis at 9. He is a CFB gamer. Type of dude you’d want on a CFB team - evidenced by his success there. But his smaller measurables show up in a lot of ways: full body throws, inconsistent mechanics, on his toes to throw MOF, etc. I actually thought I was going to like him more than my eventual film grade. But that ship has sailed I look forward to seeing what Caleb can do in a Bears uniform with DJ Moore and hopefully Nabers or Odunze. Fun times ahead in Chitown.

He’s just not accurate enough imo. Had the chance to earn staring roles at Michigan and Tennessee and failed to do so (remember Hendon Hooker beat him out for that job). I’m not sure I like him enough as a lateral athlete to say for sure he could make the position switch, but from what we have seen he doesn’t have starting QB finesse

He should've done it when Hooker was the QB. He'd probably be a top 2 round pick at TE. tbh I'd be weary of a guy with that much potential and so many opportunities in college and couldn't really do much with it.

I don't understand how Caleb Williams gets to pick #1 overall, let alone QB1. Mechanics? Sure. Arm strength and accuracy? Sure. But when I look at good-to-great NFL QBs, I see a trend - they are over 6'2", do well under pressure, and can go through their progressions quickly. Or they have athletic, rushing upside. So consider this: Among the top 6 QBs this cycle: McCarthy, Nix, Penix, Maye, Daniels, and Williams. Caleb was the worst under pressure and took the longest time to throw. Where Maye would make a typical 3-step drop out of shotgun, Caleb would take 5-. So I'm left wondering in what system is he going to get 3.2 seconds to throw? On what team is having the worst grade under pressure going to benefit him? On what team will 16 fumbles over a 12-game stretch help him? Among the top-6 QBs, he only surpasses Penix and Nix as a rusher. So how he gets to this unquestionable QB1 rating is beyond me - let alone the first overall pick. There are plenty of doubts for me.

Penix has the best big time throw rate in tight coverage I've ever seen. Including the nicest back shoulder throw I've ever seen. People look at his team and fail to see who's propping who up. Washington had a lot of these guys before Penix and they were a bad team in all fazes... A good statistic to prove Penix mastery is Rome Odunze. Rome has the highest contested catch rate and the lowest separation rate of the big 3 WR, Rome, MHJ, and Nabers. If it wasn't for Penix ability to make those big throws in tight coverage we wouldn't even know who Rome is and I love Odunze. Penix has helped Odunze find an elite niche he makes players around him better. Penix throws about as much difficult NFL throws as anyone in the country and he gets the ball out quick helping his O-line immensely. People point to his overall completion rate and it makes me laugh because it's skewed by the difficulty of his throws as well as how often he throws. He has to be THE team at all times. Manning had a career completion% of 65.3, Brady was 64.3, Mahomes is 66.3, and Penix is 63.3 career and that's with two awful years in Indiana with Rattler SC level talent around him. Alot of these other guys in the high 60's will come back down when put into an NFL offense when forced to adapt to throwing difficult routine NFL throws (Back Shoulder), but Penix will thrive as that's already his game.

I never got the Penix hype, always thought he was more of a early day 3, late day 2 type of guy. Great arm strength, good pocket presence, but a mountain of red flags. He’s old, had several season ending injuries, is inconsistent, has spotty accuracy, poor ball placement, no anticipation or touch throws, never throws over the middle, average athlete with no creation ability. And all of that behind one of the best offensive lines in college football with maybe the best WR core. Maybe he'll prove me wrong and looks like a different player in the league but I wouldn't wanna be the one finding out.

I think for everyone after Williams Maye and Daniels, it's way more about the system. For example, if Nix gets with Sean Payton, it's going to get nasty. Nix's anticipation and mobility could be a pain in the back for teams in that scenario. I don't know what Connor is on about, go watch him rip shots at Troy Franklin, all last year. I think he has a B to B+ arm. Easily in line with Kirk Cousins or Dak.

I love this show and watch it all the time. But come on now, there only two quarterbacks in this draft with Heisman Trophies. That’s because they were not only the most outstanding player in their position in that season, but a paragon of college football. Now, I think Drake Maye is talented, but there’s no possible argument that he’s second best prospect over Daniels. It’s funny, but before the draft season I had no idea who drake maye was. But I know who Daniels is, and that could mean something.

I cannot wait to hear why you guys think Penix and Daniels are not on Maye's level of prospect. I honestly think both are better passers today. Edit: Maybe Trevor can explain why Penix is a worse QB prospect than guys like Malik Willis, I am pretty sure you had Willis as a lock to Pitt at 20 and as a top 50 player on your big board. Trevor saying Penix is maybe a 3rd rounder is wild to me, especially when he says accuracy is the issue. He is the best outside thrower in the country and his adjusted completion % is better than both guys at the top of this list. Maybe his accuracy 'issue' is because his ADoT is way further than the rest? Is the concern with Daniels just a weight and durability issue? Are you maybe underselling the value of your QB getting 700+ rushing yards? I am not worried about adequate arm strength like you guys seem to be as it does not prevent you from being a great NFL passer, Burrow has a weaker arm and is a top 3 passer. Not hating btw, love your pod.
