The Bay of Ise is more than 1700km2 wide and is shallow and sandy. It is an ideal place for seabirds that shelter from the strong wind of winter. It is situated about 350km South West of Tokyo. Ducks gather in winter alongside its coast feeding on seaweed for some and on fish for the red-breasted merganser for example. Seaweed is grown on its shore for human (and birds !) consumption.
