The Bay of Ise is more than 1700km2 wide and is shallow and sandy. It is an ideal place for seabirds that shelter from the strong wind of winter. It is situated about 350km South West of Tokyo. Ducks gather in winter alongside its coast feeding on seaweed for some and on fish for the red-breasted merganser for example. Seaweed is grown on its shore for human (and birds !) consumption.

Thank you so much! Yes indeed those ducks and waders do exist in the Northern Hemisphere. The bay of Ise is just a very good spot for to film them. It’s harbors and fishing places and sea birds don’t seem to be bothered by that. It’s just not a place for landscape photography ! Ducks remain incredibly numerous far away in the sea but even with a Coolpix it’s nearly impossible to film. Very good luck to your birdwatching : we are many who appreciate all the birds you show us.🙏🙏🍀🍀😊😊‼️

@@camnature1147 You are too kind. Thank you really ! Shore birds are easier to film because they are grouped on a narrow band along the sea. Forest birds are just so difficult ! Best wishes always in your daily work and life!👋👋😊😊‼️

I wonder why the males all congregate together. A good clip of the Ospray in flight. This is an interesting film of a day in the Bay of Ise👍

Thank you really. It’s kind of you to write. Males compete for the female and the right to mate: she is the chooser. Ducks are funny this way. Other birds also display but I have never seen them (like the birds of paradise ). I hope you have a bit of rain? Nothing doing in Tokyo. It’s parched. Very best wishes for the weekend.☘️☘️☘️💦💦💦

Hello!Thank you so much for your kind words. Indeed the bay of Ise was very famous for both fish and water birds but now it is very much built and only in some places can the sea birds gather and find food. At the moment it’s the season for ducks courtship display and winter birds. Awaiting your next video. Good luck and good birding ! Thank you again.

Thank you Patricia for uploading another excellent video. Scaups are rare in the U.K. as you know so amazing to see such a large flock. Blue Rock Thrushes are incredibly rare here too, I have only seen one and that was a vagrant on a hillside in Abergavenny a few years ago. It’s interesting to see the large ‘rafts’ of similar duck species, it’s true what they say ‘birds of a feather stick together’! Also interesting seeing the Red Breasted Merganser’s display and the way the gull approaches opening the shell. Just trying to extract the mollusc as the shell slid around made me really appreciate having two hands and opposable thumbs! Hope you have a nice weekend!

Hello John! How very kind of you to write. I didn’t know greater scaups were so rare in Europe : I don’t get the chance to go near the sea when I go home. Yes indeed I felt that sometimes birds need hands even though they generally manage ok with bill and feet. Even here where it is resident the blue rock thrush is not easy to find. You either see the female or the male and never both at the same time. They like the seaside and tall rocky places. In Spain I had a glimpse of them but they had no red belly. I agree it’s puzzling to see the way ducks of a feather stick together. One place at a time and you get different ducks in sheltered spots. But they all stick together except maybe teals and mallards who don’t seem to mind so much. Sorry my answer is too long. Thank you again and I am as usual awaiting for your amazing and sometimes very surprising videos ! Best of luck and careful with the foot.
