During the winter it didn't rain in Tokyo. There were no more than 5cm in this small river and fish was nowhere to be seen. Then last week, it snowed a lot during 24h. Suddenly the river started flowing fast and many birds came back, with the aim of feeding on anything they could find. A Japanese wagtail there is good at catching small fishes, an other small birds at extracting food from the tall grass stems. It is also the residence of kingfishers so fish is definitely back at least for a while. Azure-winged magpies are seen on its banks and birds started their courtship display in their own way.

Thank you very much for your kind words. The river hadn’t been flowing properly for months and the birds ate most of the fish since the water was so shallow. We had 24 hours of snow: and that video was filmed a day later. In the mountains the roads are still impassable due to the accumulation of snow. Now it’s very dry again unfortunately. I wish you a pleasant week with lots of flying visitors.

Hello 👋 ! How are you ? Thank you for your kind words. The birds came because the river started to flow again. We have had no rain in Tokyo since last June. I hope your area keeps you busy with many birds ! I have watched your reports on lakes and on birds in the fields. It seems you have a lot of 🌧️ ! I hope it’s not too much. Very best wishes and very good luck 🤞 🍀 !

Good morning (logically your day is starting !)!It is awfully kind of you to watch and write ✍️. Thank you very very much. The pair of kingfishers lives in this river. They are tiny and very fast flying: amazing little birds . Many cameramen in Japan are keen on kingfishers because of their colors and their fishing skills. For the moment they are more common in Japan than in Europe because many parks have ponds with fish. It may change of course. I sure hope you can film them. Best of luck in this February month which is often nasty in Europe.

Hello friend. You have met a great many birds near this river. They are really beautiful. You can clearly see that, nature is already waking up from its winter sleep😃 The imminent arrival of spring was announced by the Crow😅No and the flowering Apricot. A very beautiful Video👍 Warm regards!

Hello and thank you very much. It’s really kind of you to watch the video and give me your thoughts. Thank you for the big large-billed crow: they normally stay in woods but the snowfall attracted birds. That time I saw 25 species of birds in 3h which was all due to the snowfall and river flowing again. I wish you a good end of winter too and many birds and mammals too. Best wishes!

A really beautiful video as always Patricia with some spectacular videography, the Kingfisher was a living jewel! Very jealous of your Daurian Redstarts, such a handsome bird, just one of many that I wish we had here - Azure Magpie and Dusky Thrush to name two more. You are very lucky to have had such limited precipitation, it's barely stopped here and much of the ground is soggy. I slid down a bank that was unexpectedly muddy when chasing Waxwings on Wednesday and twisted my knee. Worth it for the footage as there were about 140 there. Wishing you another successful birding week.

Hello John! Thank you very much. That was no luck for your knee. You didn’t need that. But at least you saw waxwings again ! Here the mistletoe has berries in spite of the drought but waxwings for the moment aren’t coming this way. I have just been to a location with lakes where the water had become rather shallow. Good ducks but the whooper swans were gone : not enough water and too warm. There is always something to hope with the tree blossoms and nectar feeders. I wished you could feel less pain in your knee. And that it were less muddy in your birding area. You need good light for filming. Plenty of good luck and getting better soon.🍀🍀🍀👋👋😊😊‼️

It is interesting that there is no rainfall in Tokyo just like here. We have had only one rain event since the last winter rains and our water reserves are beginning to be a concern. Although our vegetation is used to moderate drought conditions it is starting to looked stressed. Great Audio of the Large billed Crow. Fantastic close up too😎👍

Hello 👋! Yes indeed both our countries seem to dry out while at the other side of the Pacific Ocean California now has flooding. It’s probably both global warming and El Niño put together. The west side of Japan which is under the influence of Siberia or Eastern China weather pattern does receive water or snow but not enough to pass the higher mountains that block the snow/rain clouds.Australia being so wide must have a more complicated weather system but yes both are left dry😢. I thought the big crow deserved to be shown as it is rather impressive. Excellent weekend.I wish us both rain but it doesn’t look like it will soon.😢.

For us this has been a very strange year. On the north and eastern parts of Australia there is flooding but the south west where we live is dry. Every time the rain starts to creep south west towards us there is a High or hot front from the south which pushes it away. We are hoping that as our winter approaches those hot fronts from the south will weaken, then we should get some rain. Best wishes and good luck! @@Nature_Watching_Japan
