Whether it be the October blues or November stripers, I was never able to hook up into more than 1 fish in a row. Schools were small and moving fast, as they'd get into quick frenzies instead of 5+ minute blitzes. I had a few days when small schools of stripers would be in close for a short period, but wouldn't hit topwater, metal, or soft plastics. Gulls never even got together in swarms nor did they stay active feeding like they normally would during the fall run. Ospreys left early this year too seeing we never had any reasonable amounts of adult bunker around in the harbors and around the shore, sandbars, and jetties. Even though the local waters are still at temperatures from 56-58, I decided to call it quits and concentrate mostly on freshwater. Looking forward to the traditional April run.

At the end, did you try a big plug to imitate those mackerel? Maybe there were a few decent bass keyed on grabbing the mackerel and so ignoring a small bucktail.

That's a really good question because I think we have a mix of Hudson and Chesapeake area fish here. I'm pretty sure these head for Montauk.

I don't carry a knife. If I was wading in the Montauk rocks I'd consider it. 9'2'' rod.

Thanks for the video! I was wondering what kind of technique or tips to use when casting into birds like that? I’m new to shore fishing this year and have caught about as many gulls as fish…is it common to snag birds?

Try not to cast into the most dense birds and keep your cast angle low. It will help.
