The kid can surf. He's had a few articles written about him. He's a darkhorse, an underdog. I just can't talk about him in the same breath as some of the top pros who a lot more experience and are solid competitive performers at Teahupoo. The Olympics often has upsets, but I wouldn't bet money on Tim Elter. (Wow, this sounds like someone should bet money on Tim Elter Lol)

JJF is one of four favorites I picked. He was runner up in the recent Tahiti Pro and is currently number one in the world. So, yeh, definitely a favorite along with Gabriel Medina, Jack Robinson and Kauli Vaast.

If Surfing wants to be in the Olympics, and if the host city is not on the coast, just why the f--- dont they build a surf pool?! Its ridiculous, with all the sponsorship money involved. The pool in Paris would be a win win situation, now and in the future. A surf pool would mean equal conditions for everyone in the comp, major audiences, safety for the surfers (Teahupoo is not a gentle wave...), the possibility for athletes to be a part of the event in the Olympic Village, an audience at the venue... Just imagine if a long jump athlete had to run on an uneven surface, while his opponent ran on a smooth track. Thats what happens with the random factor of a surf comp in the ocean. This way, you can call it the Olympics, but its just another contest. Ridiculous.

@@OldSurfDad I am not defending that ALL surf comps should be held in wave pools, just that the Olympic spirit is one of equal chances for everyone, just think of gymnastics, the only differential factor is the performance of the athlete. It's all in his hands, or feet in this case... The canvas is exactly similar for everyone.

@@pteronadon I agree. I made the comparison to snowboarding and how the half pipe is carved into the mountain and allows a consistent playing field for all athletes. I think the future of Olympic sports will be wave pools and the professional tours will eventually develop around them with natural waves being more show up during a swell Nathan Florence style. How cool would that be? A little spice for eveyone.

Not a fan of this site for an Olympics surfing competition. After all it’s just a big drop, a turn and tube….which you either make or don’t. Doesn’t cover all the surfing skills which I thought might be a prerequisite for a medal.
