So I wanted to get out and enjoy some time in the Mountains and do a short thank you to our nations Vets. And get this Crosstrek Wilderness..out in the Wilderness. But I ended up taking a road less traveled. And learned some things about my new little mountain goat. Love this little beast.

Thank you for your service! Yes, that button is a neat feature and also is the re lock button like I showed in one of my KZbin shorts. Pretty slick feature they did there. I have to say, this Subaru has exceeded my expectations quite a bit. Which makes for a very happy owner. Thank you for viewing and leaving a comment. Truly helps push my channel out there.

More so if you like getting out of the city and want to have the security of being able to truly get off the beaten path. In this car, you absolutely can have the best of both worlds. Daily driver and weekend goat runs. Again, thanks for watching and commenting. Subarus are amazing cars for snow, and the Wilderness models are even more so. Excellent video with some absolutely gorgeous scenery. I was envious of those views and of course of the snowy weather. Subies make driving in the stuff pretty much effortless. You really get a lot of car for the money with the brand. Thanks so much for making and sharing this video. I totally loved following you on this adventure in your new CrossTrek Wilderness. I live in Clarksville, about 15 miles from Ft Campbell, home of the 101st-I have much respect for that outfit! Thank you for your service to our nation! Now let’s get ‘er back! I am a 24-year Air Force veteran myself, but my contributions no doubt pale in comparison to yours and the 101st. I had my eye on a 2024/25 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. While I think we are still in the infant stage of battery power, I have been intrigued by the hybrid (electric car on training wheels). So when I went to actually buy the RAV4 in late September, there were no 2024s yet in stock. But of course, I could put a deposit down and it would be a crap shoot for me to get the one I wanted-EVENTUALLY. But they had a 2024 Outback Limited XT (turbo version) outfitted perfectly according to my wishlist. While I considered the Wilderness edition, the 26 mpg didn’t call out to me, as I intended to make a few longer-distance roadtrips. While my new Outback is actually the first Subaru I have ever been in, when I was stationed in northern CA, I noticed that Subarus were EVERYWHERE, especially in the higher elevations where they tackle adverse weather conditions with ease. AFTER I brought home my Outback, I watched a video comparison of small AWD vehicles, and the Subaru slayed them all. Made me feel even better about my purchase. What a high-quality, well-made vehicle! So glad now that they didn’t have any 2024 RAV4s in stock-I think I am a Subaru man for life now! Thanks again for your very interesting video-but especially for your service to our great nation!

Wow, thank you! And thank you so much for your service as well. I'm always thrilled to hear from a fellow Veteran. I too looked at the Rav 4 as that was kinda my main focus coming from a life of flawless driving Toyotas. I literally have no idea how many I've had ranging from a 1967 Corona up to the 2022 Corolla, trucks, SUV's and even a station wagon. But, like you, when stacking up the rav 4 against the wilderness, I had to step back and have a closer look. Clearly came to the same conclusion. My Mother has a Prius which I drove for a long time when she was not needing it, and boy, that fuel milage is impossible to beat. So to compare any car against that was just not fair. The failing for the rav 4 for me was the rear motor and bias, not to mention the price difference. I'm not gonna ever trash talk a Toyota unless it's earned though. And with nothing but good from them, I just can't. With that said, for the type of car I needed for daily driving as well as adventures I go on, I think this Subaru was the better choice. Hard pill to swallow, but facts are facts. And, yes, Subaru is king up here in the Northwest. I live and often are up in the mountains. But I'm not gonna lie, when I read your post that your from Clarksville, my heart jumped a bit. I miss home badly. While I'm from Oregon, Ft. Campbell will forever be where my heart lives for obvious reasons. Perhaps someday when I retire I can make a trip back there, have a look round, maybe get on base to HQ and salute the flag there again as I had done so many times years ago. Maybe a visit to land between the lakes early in the morning again too. Not sure what type of content you enjoy, but perhaps some of my videos on clear lake or others may intrest you. There are a few that truly stand out to me personally. And I enjoy making the videos. I hope this Subaru can be an asset to my film work alongside my Tacoma Truck which has been at the heart of my channel as well. Different tool for different jobs. And should we ever meet, the first drink of choice is on me for a toast to our fallen brothers, and to those serving now and in the past. You can get the next toast to those who answer the call to serve this nation with pride and honor in the future. Thank you for watching, and the amazing comment left for me and the channel. Adventure awaits, life is to short to enjoy a recliner too early. Hope to see ya out there. And agree, LETS GET HER BACK!

Thank you! And I'll be sure to tell my son you said thanks! If ya get a crosstrek in any form, I'd be sure to at least get a version with the 2.5L engine. Add in some all terrain tires and go play with confidence. The only reason I got the wilderness package is due to the places I like to go film. I've ended up in places with my old car that things didn't go well or could not get there to scout the area to film, or just to film. This car should fix that issue for me and still be a great daily driver for work and normal use. I feel it's the best fit for me. Thanks for watching! Every view, comment and sub has really helped move my channel. I do appreciate every single view, like, comment and subscriber. Thank you! Yes, this Crosstrek Wilderness will be used and in some of my videos for sure. One of the main reasons I have it now is this last filming season I was using my 2022 Corolla hatchback as my scouting rig and quick runs. But that soon turned out to be not a great idea. I did a video at Davis Lake that really drove it home that I needed to figure out a better option. And I think I found it for sure. Thanks again for watching, and I hope you find some of my other videos worth your time as well. Many are long, but more for the experience than just touching a topic.

Thank you. I do love the natural beauty of this area. My videos are all shot in the pacific northwest. Most in Oregon so far. But I've got some plans for the future. Most of my rather long videos are shot on lakes in this area from land air and underwater. Several videos from Clear lake and Waldo lake are some of the most breathtaking underwater videos I've captured. This video was taken up on Mt. Hood Oregon up near Timberline Lodge on a random forrest road I just happen to take that day on the way to where I ended up actually going at the end of it. I had not planned on what it turned into, but happy it did. It's said this road is one of the mountain ridge roads from way back in the logging days. Lots around for sure that have been forgotten to time. Thank you for watching and the kind comment. Happy Veterans Day, and what an excellent review ! It's very smart for Subaru to 'Wilderness' option their entire line, and thus provide that extra off-road capability across the line. I just took my '22 Outback Touring on a country trip, and it provided such a comfortable, safe and luxurious driving experience with all the mod cons of advanced cruise control, lane keep assist etc. It's my 4th Subaru, and I'm very impressed to find that the Outback (2.5L NA) is 10-15% more fuel efficient than my previous 2004 Subaru Liberty sedan (same 2.5L NA).

Thank you! Watching the Zion videos early on, some had mentioned being upset this didn't come with a turbo. While that might be a good option down the road, as a mechanic I'm glad I had the option on this car to have a non turbo. I'd rather have a longer life engine than extra hp I'd seldom need. This has plenty for my needs, and with the 4.11 gearing on the wilderness. It feels great. Thanks for watching and commenting too!

Thank you for sharing your experience and for your family's service. When I moved to a big city in a mountain state I wanted something that would make sense both in the city and for what I call off-pavement (rather than offroad) exploration, to replace my great-for-the-city Toyota. I discovered Subarus and was thrilled when friends sold me their 2000 Outback. LOVE it and still have it but have been reluctant to explore too far from help as it has gotten so old. Needs a major repair now so have a new Crosstrek Premium on order. Sad to see the old one go but like you getting into the mountains brings me a lot of peace and joy and I have not been able to do that for too long. Too bad budget does not extend to a Wilderness but as I do not plan to be quite as adventurous as you I think the Premium still has enough of the same features for my needs. Your video confirms how I feel about "what makes a Subaru a Subaru". And now you know why "fan boys/girls" exist. 😁

That is great! What a wonderful comment you have left here. Thanks for the vet hat tip. I'll be sure to Pass it onto my Son. I do feel that your new car will serve you very well. About the only thing I'd suggest is some tires that can get out out of some slick mud as the premium and sport stock tires are really good on pavement, but that's about it even with AWD. So, perhaps something with a slightly more aggressive all season tread when you need new tires will do you just great. Until then, maybe think about rubber floor mats and maybe a recovery board and your gold! Thanks again for watching and being a part of my journey.

Thank you!! I had held off looking at Subaru cars for decades due to the well known head gasket issues. But, when I ran across the Crosstrek Wilderness that was coming out, I loved the offering so much I had to look into it again to see if they had ever finally addressed that well known issue. And it turned out that yes, they finally did. And that it's been awhile now. So with that handled, off to the Subaru dealer I went and ended up getting the 1st one in the area when it arrived. Really loving it. At the same time, I do think that for 99% of normal users, the non Wilderness versions are more than fine with the 2.5 engine. I wanted the Wilderness due to my video channel and areas I seem to find myself in. Did I need this much ability?..no idea, but I've got it if I need it, or get stupid like I nearly did in my Davis Lake video with my car I sold to get this one. First of all, Thank you for your service. I just traded in a very capable, but failing, vehicle on a Crosstrek Wilderness. I thought that I had settled. I bought it because the salesman didn't say "no" when I asked him if we could go down the Forest Service roads that I wouldn't have even attempted in anything else in this price range. .But, he did ask me not to tell his boss. I'm an old hiker on disabilty, and my last truck took me to all the places that I could no longer get to myself. After watching your video, I'm kind of excited to explore some new places. Thank you.

Great video! I have an '23 Outback Wilderness, obviously not the same vehicle, but maybe some of the observations I've had over my first ~3,500 miles will make sense to you and your Crosstrek. 1. My fuel economy for the first 1,000 miles or so was terrible. It improved pretty substantially after that. 2. City fuel economy on the Wilderness trims is known to be bad (due to the higher ride, shorter final drive ratio, and tires), and mine has been no different. Even after the MPG improvement I tend to get only 20-22 city. I expected this going in, so this isn't a huge deal to me, personally. I know others have picked different vehicles based on that, though. 3. Highway fuel economy has been much better after the break-in period. I tend to get in the 28-32 range, which astounds me, given the Outback Wilderness is a 3,900lbs vehicle with a 260hp turbo motor and 9.5" of ground clearance. Obviously the Outback Wilderness and Crosstrek Wilderness are different vehicles, but I think the differences they each have vs. their respective stock models are actually pretty similar: higher ride, AT tires, shorter final drive ratio, different transmission programming, etc., so maybe maybe this information will be useful to you or other Wilderness trim owners or people considering getting one. Even if not, thanks again for the video and I'm glad you're loving your vehicle!

All true info here. I expected milage to get better as it all broke in and that's already showing up as I track it. And like you, I knew this going in, but the advantages the wilderness packages give, surpasses the slight loss of mileage. Roof weight, towing abilities, trans program and all the other goodies we get with this package. I have no regrets at all, but sure am glad I got the wilderness package over a standard version. Now if I was just going to keep it in the city on hard top roads, then a sport would have been just fine. But that's not me or my lifestyle. The wilderness is. And I'm grateful they finally gave us this package on the Crosstrek. Thank you for watching and commenting too!

Thank you so much. How you describe it happens to be how I love to do my normal videos that I do. The core of my videos are the experience. I've always said when asked why my nature or lake videos are so long. It's because you can't compress nature into a tictoc or short or you have missed the point of it all. And that it's an experience. Thank you so much for watching my video and for the wonderful comment! Really made my day!

I got the Thule extended version, so the longer of the 2. I wanted to be sure I'd be ok with a tent if I can land one. Kinda keeping an eye out for a nice used one as they are crazy expensive. But for my normal filming work, I can also haul several of Mt filming kayaks up there. My 2 largest filming kayaks I'll just use the trailer even though weight wise the roof can handle them, but I can't safely get them up there. But that's why I had the low profile hitch put on. My big filming kayak is a very heavy pedal drive kayak that is the Big Fish 103 pedal that's shown and used in several videos now. More to come using that craft for sure. Thank you for your service and your son's service. Another thank you for the great review. We own a '22 Forester Wilderness, and no issues whatsoever in almost 2 years of ownership. We're getting 30 mpg driving in the Houston suburban area, mix of freeways and suburban roads. This week we bought our 2nd Subaru, a Crosstrek Wilderness just like yours (sapphire blue), but it doesn't include the moon roof package. So far, we're loving it. The one thing I do miss that the Forester Wilderness has, is the front view camera, but I'm getting used to it. My wife likes the convenience of the power lift gate and space of the Forester, so she's keeping it; I'll "sacrifice" driving the Crosstrek. You made a great purchase, you won't regret it!

I feel pretty safe saying your fuel mileage will definitely improve quite a bit. My 2021 routinely gets low 30's with the 2.5 liter. For whatever reason it takes a few weeks for it to get locked in, but I think you'll see it steadily get better and better. Mine obviously is not the Wilderness, it's the Sport trim with both X-Modes, and now has about 25k on it. I do think I've heard the Wilderness doesn't get quite the mileage that the standard Crosstrek gets, but I'm sure you'll end up at least in the upper 20's. Enjoy, they're great little cars. I thought the same as well compared to how I normally drive hugging the right more. But, when I noted that out on an open road. I held the wheel straight, stopped the car, put in park and actually got out to see where on the road the car ACTUALLY sits. And much to my surprise it was dead centered in the lane. Guess I've just gotten used to being far right. The disadvantage to that is that I've had less time to react to animals jumping out from the right side. Deer, elk, cats, squirrels, coyote, possum, dogs and such over the years. Only ever had 1 hit though sooooo....

Thank you for viewing! I was set on the crosstrek from the word go given my needs for daily driving and my needs for filmwork and scouting locations. So for me this was a match made in heaven. The camera used for this video was a DJI pocket 2 content creator package. It's a fantastic do it all camera with a wireless mic as well. I did not have it mounted on anything actually, I just held it. If you look up that camera you can see that it's an easy match. However, with this said, had I known that day how it would turn out, I'd have also mounted a gopro or a 360 camera for better angles. But this little gimble camera is amazing and has tracking as well so for a solo creator, it's great. Hope that answer helps ya. If you would like any further info, feel free to ask. And thanks again for watching! It's exciting as I'm near a huge benchmark of 600 subs! Incredible to me anyways. Either car you pick, your gonna be happy. But if you plan on going off road, get a wilderness in any of the 3 versions. Outback, Forrester or now the crosstrek.

Great video - wish we could get the Wilderness models in Australia. My experience, with my 2021 Australian 2 liter XV (aka Crosstrek) Limited, is that at steady highway speeds (here our better roads have 110 kmh = about 68 mph speed limit) AND after resetting the trip meter to clear out the average, the car gets better than 39 miles/US gallon (in our terms, around 6.2 liters per 100 kilometers). I have driven a day's worth of highway driving, varying between 60 and 68 mph (100-110 kmh) and consumption will almost always stay above 36 mpg. In contrast, my city driving experience is that *on average*, the 39 mpg slowly drops to about 20 mpg (around 12 liters per 100 km). My previous XV was an early 2012 model with 2 liter engine, just after their release in Australia, and it only ever returned about 7 liters/100km = 34 mpg. I've read that the Wilderness model has slightly poorer fuel consumption than standard models, something to do with final drive ratio??

Regarding the self steering, it is not the weight or touch of your hand, it is measuring the electical inductive field of your hand. (EDIT: This is Incorrect!) In other words, it knows your hand is there on the wheel because the electro-magnetic value of the steering wheel has changed because it has met the electro-magnetic field of your body. Pretty cool stuff, and very sensitive. I thought there were inside the cab cameras or sensors at first and I was testing different tricks, but this method was smarter than all of them. Bottom line, Im not sorry I can't trick it. I SHOULD have at least one hand on the steering wheel. The auto drive is great, and it can seem Tesla Quality, but.. it's not actually, so you better be paying attention with hands and feet on the controls. Regarding the MPG, I have had to go manual quite a bit and ensure that the car was in top gear as soon as I knew that it was ready for it. Of course we know what's coming up and the car doesn't. But I have taken to the habit of switching to manual once I am up to cruising speed, and just spamming the paddles to keep in top gear, maybe do a manual downshift for upcoming inclines etc. This initially dod NOT add any MPG because I was terrible at it, and even forgot I was in manual sometimes which is not good (be careful), but now it is a semi'automatic habit for me to think and shift ahead, and it has increased my MPG's up by 4-7 MPG depending on driving conditions. Your car is geared a bit lower, so it is even more important to get it in that top cruising gear sooner, and keep it in that top gear longer. Your car is playing it save a lot of times on city streets and winding hills, but you know what's coming up, and you know you can go higher, and take it easy. That is the OTHER thing I do. I try to take it easy, drive slower, enjoy the scenery, and get 70 more miles out of a tank. I have an OBW. As I've said on many channels and many threads, NORMAL Mode IS an XMode. Subaru has marketed it is a "special" situation offroad mode, but the truth is, that you are always in a smart AWD mode and that Snow and Dirt, and Deep snow and dirt, are actually extremes on both sides of the "Normal" mode. Once is more baised towards NO SLIP, and the other is baised towards More Spin and Momentum, and "Normal is in between. Think of it like Dirt and snow as Xmode1, Normal is Xmode 2, and Deep Snow and Mud is Xmode 3, each progressively with more slippage allowed. This is an over simplification, but it is a far better rule of thumb to understand the system than most people, including a lot of sakes people and dealers, understand. When you go offroad, I recommend to people to STAY in Normal mode unless they reach conditions where that is no longer working for them. Xmode1 will wear breaks and ruin MPG, Xmode 3 is rarely an improvement for the vast majority of situations. The Normal mode is going to be the best mode for 99% of the offroad situations you find yourself in real life. It is the compromise between two extremes while preserving advantages of both. I have an Outback Wilderness and I've taken in in snow, deep soft sand, Ice, and mud, and I have only used Xmode twice in several years, and it DID help in those specific situations, getting me past some difficult spots. The vast majority of the time, NORMAL mode is gonna be your best choice. I can see why Amberdog was in Xmode 1 on that grade, that IS a situation where Xmode 1 is probably a worthwhile choice, although Normal Mode likely would have been good enough for most of it. I've always maintained since they first came out that the Crosstrek had the potential to be the best, lightest and most nomble soft roader. I got the Outback Wilderness because it had more room, and had a lot of good mods already from the factory, but it is heavier and longer. If the Crosstrek has more clearance and more power, and lower gearing, I've always maintained it would be one of the funnest and most capable softroaders. And here ya go, the Crosstrek Wilderness is cool. It's now got the more powerful motor capablilty, AND lower gearing, and it's light. It is really applicable to call it a goat, it should be sure footed and nimble like a goat, with good approach and departure and crossover ahgles compared to all the other Wilderness editions. I imagine the motor is adequate given the lower weight. I'm glad they gave the Outback a Turbo, because it probably needs it with the extra weight of more length and more cargo. The only thing I would do to the Crosstrek is put some slightly bigger tires on it, as possible, becaue you can only go up a few sizes. But the tires it comes with are fairly good for the purpose, and sure seemed to get the job done in that snow. Pretty impressive. I went up two sizes on my OBW tires, and it basically has light truck sized tires, which helps me bet over big ruts and holes (and curbs and rocks). Regarding Hill Descent. I haven't actually used that a lot. I forgot it had it for the longest time, and then saw another review and remembered, and kicked myself for not using it in situations I had been in previously. This is one case where I believe you do have to be in one of the NON NORMAL selectable Xmodes. Preferrably, and probably Xmode 1, which is the Snow and Dirt. The Hill Descent control is automatic when you are in this mode. It will not activate in Normal mode. You can't set or adjust the speed like in other vehicles, but it will go the speed you show it to go, with your accelleration and braking. let off the brake, and it just takes over. want to go faster, give it a bit of gas. and then let off.

Some fantastic and useful info here and why I love it when people comment as well. The only part I'm going to have to disagree with is the steering assist hands on wheel. By that, I've tested this several ways thinking it was conductive as well, but I have not only tried leather gloves, but rubber as well trying to trick it. Also tried 3 steering wheel covers and the same result. If it were an electrical field these would have fooled it. And, if your hands are too softly on the wheel it will not shut off the alert. One or 2 hands keep it engaged. Or, all you need to do is just ever so slightly bump the wheel with your hand, stick, knee or anything, it thinks your on the wheel. I need to play with the paddles and see how I like them. Figured with the CVT it's sort of just for fun, but still want to play some after it's over the 500 mile mark. Just about there too. My milage is improving by the day as it gets broke in. And that trip up the mountain really helped seat things well. Thus far though, I think for my lifestyle and hobbies as well as for my filmwork for my channel, this little goat is an absolute win. I honestly think it's going to be a real asset getting to locations for filming much safer, better and able for those times where I don't need to take my Tacoma TRD off road or scouting runs as well and my air filmwork. I do hope to get a bike rack for my E bike at some point as well as maybe a rooftop tent if I find a good deal on one. Thank you for the detailed and experienced comment I'm sure other viewers will love. Videos and comments like this are what's helping me grow on KZbin. I'm really close to a major benchmark of 600 subscribers. And for me, that's HUGE.

@@Amberdogproductions Thanks for your kind response. Regarding the steering wheel stuff, I believe I read somewhere that it was inductive, and I was surprised because I assumed it was some sort of sensor as well. I looked at the owners manual for the eyesight system (after not finding anything in the regular owners manual) and it didn't say anything about inductive tech. It was talking about sensing no user input, too light of a touch, or no input, so I learned something. At any rate, I usually just have one hand on the wheel onlong freeway stretches on long trips, which is the only time I use this, and it's just a bit of added security in case I was drifting. I don't really trust it, but it IS impressive. I remember allowing it to completely steer me thru 20 miles of curvy highways, as a test, and it performed flawlessly, as did the overall cruise control even in stop and go traffic. I have it set to have the lead car fairly far in front of me for a nice, non tailgating buffer.

@@Databyter lol, me too! It does work well, but I'm leery of it. Maybe because I'm just older? But yes, the adaptive cruise is AMAZING! I too keep it at full distance follow. And it sure is weird to watch it break to a full, smooth stop. Just blew my mind. I've never been so attentive to a brake pedal in my life! But it worked every time. I mentioned in my video that these are assistance features and like you, that's how I view them. I'll not depend on them to do the work for me, but, if I slack at any time, it's sure nice to know there is something there that much like a brother in arms, has my 6.

Happy Veterans Day! May I ask, what is the length of your crossbars? I can't decide between 50 and 53". Thank you.
@Amberdogproductions
@Amberdogproductions 7 ай бұрын
Mine are the 53 Aero heavy duty ones to be able to support a tent if I get one. Many crossbars can't support them so I opted to just do it right the 1st time. This way I'm able to do anything that may come up. What I will say is to watch the size of a rooftop tent. Weight and size. Both dynamic and static. These cars have great static, but you need to watch the dynamic weight rating.

At only 319 miles you Subie isn't even broken in. You should add some mpg after 1k miles.

Have you tried resetting the average fuel economy on a trip or after a fill up?
@Amberdogproductions
@Amberdogproductions 6 ай бұрын
Yes, I just hit 1k on the car and the estimated mpg shown on the car was at 22.3 mpg. I also did a fuel calculation at fill up this AM and it came out to 22 mpg as well. So at 1k on the clock, that's currently where I'm at and close to the manufacturer estimate mpg of 26. Not sure I'll ever see that, but we will see

@@Amberdogproductions Run-in period always has lower fuel economy due to increased engine internal friction. You should continue to see improvement. My AWD Mazda3 2.5L averages between 22-24mpg which isn’t nearly as good as I would have expected, but on longer freeway trips it jumps to 32mpg or better.

The best so far now is 24.6 mpg on mine. With that said, the wilderness package does have lower gearing and other changes that lower the mpg. So even a 2024 crosstrek premium will get better mpg than a 24 crosstrek wilderness.
