You should know that these are Subaru commercials and not an independent review. Subaru pays Ryan to make these infomercials, in a style that looks like a review. The car will ALWAYS pass every test, and do every well... after all, the idea is to make it look amazing so you buy it, and it worked.
@TexasStormChaser Жыл бұрын
@@uncalm The only difference between the Onyx XT (Sport) and Wilderness is that Subaru put a factory lift kit on the Wilderness, changed some bumpers, installed A/T tires, and added a transmission cooler. Otherwise, they are identical. Same AWD system. Same engine. Same transmission. Same X modes. The Sport, Limited, Wilderness are all the same vehicle just different cosmetic packages. There's nothing stopping you from doing that to a Sport using much better parts, for an overall cheaper price. The point behind the Wilderness is to buy a factory modified Crosstrek Sport that's under warranty and that is attractive to some people. If you do plan to modify... change tires, suspension, etc? Get the Sport. No reason to pay the premium for factory parts you're just going to remove.

I have a 2016 crosstrek. Absolutely love it. Work in Healthcare with on call requirements and in rural area in a snowy state. Never once has my crosstrek not been able to make it. Sometimes called in the middle of the night with unplowed snow or blizzard conditions; the crosstrek has not failed me or gotten stuck. Loud inside but gets through about anything.

I guess I’m part of the “silent minority” but I don’t actually mind the plastic body cladding! If I have a gripe, it’s the gold accents -I think the “wilderness” badge is more than enough. For Subaru to get me to trade up from my 2019 Crosstrek, they would had to up the engine power (220 hp range) and ditch the CVT for an automatic transmission.
@JeffSpehar-ov1cn Жыл бұрын
That wont happen.
@RKmndo Жыл бұрын
I'm more concerned about the vulnerable plastic bumpers. The aftermarket still doesn't offer good steel replacements. It will never be a serious crawler without a tcase that offers 2.0:1 or better gearing reduction. It doesn't matter if the tranny is manual, CVT, or auto. Subaru CVTs are actually somewhat decent now, but not for crawling without a decent tcase. Trying to crawl rocks/ledges/hills without a decent 4Low will result in damage...whether to drivetrain or to body panels. Most CUVs are also severely limited in tire size, by small wheelwells and/or by available R&P gearing. So far, a unibody vehicle can only be easily modified so much, if it is not manufactured like a Jeep XJ or Suzuki Sidekick, with diffs that are fully divorced from the transmission. Lift is severely limited, wheelwells are difficult to open up, and re-gearing is a PITA. For sloppy roads though, Subarus can be fantastic commuters. My 1st-gen Crosstrek handles icy/snowy highways like a champ, and I can get WAY better than the EPA hwy rating of 31MPG or so. One tank, I averaged over 46MPG, commuting in a middle lane with the cruise set at 55MPH. I upgraded to a high-flow cotton airfilter, BTW. With a big rooftop box and a hitch box, it can handle 5 and their luggage too, and also tows up to 1500lb quite handily...with this new Wilderness rated for up to an even more impressive max of 3500lb. That's slotted between the Bronco Sport Badlands and the Jeep KL Trailhawk.

Great video again, Ryan. I hope Subaru sells a ton of these so they continue to invest in this platform. Especially given how few vehicles in North America have this combination of size/capability. They represent such a great tradeoff for what most people actually do, day-to-day. Fairly impressive. Imagine with slightly bigger and better AT tires (although the stock ones are pretty good choice for this car) Like the Falken AT Trails (non LT version to save weight). I have always maintained that the Crosstrek had the bones, sheer shape, size, and weight, to be one of the most capable offroad platforms Subaru offers if only it had the proper clearance, Gearinng, and Power Plant. Even tho there is not a Turbo, the Power to weight ratio is pretty good here compared to say the Forester Non Turbo. And the Cooler should make a difference. I'd still like to see a Turbo offering in this form factor, but this does really well with the 2.5 and even has the same tow capacity as the Turbo Outback Wilderness. It's quite an acomplishment. My Outback Wilderness with oversized AT tires on it gets abysmal MPG off the freeway, but ON the freeway, it gets as good as advertised or better, since in a sense, the larger tires give me overdrive. Around town stop and go however, it is not as efficient. This little Crosstrek has an MPG range that is very attractive considering it is a capable AWD that can do all the things it can do. It's the Litte Subaru Jeep. I carry a high flow compressor with me, but like was shown here, I have rarely needed to actually use it. The Wilderness are very capable in these situations. I wonder how the Outback would have done on this hill. It is a lot heavier, and I'm not sure the added power is as much of a factor as being light was here. The Crosstrek is a perfect blend of lifted, nimble, weight, powered by an adequate power plant and gearing combination. Databyter

@@vitor2650 there are things I prefer on the forester for sure, but for me, overall ride quality is better in my Crosstrek. Could have a lot to do with the 2.0 over the 2.5. The Ladder is a great hill to demonstrate the effectiveness of a vehicle's drive system. Your footage perfectly illustrates why Subaru REALLY should be equipping their Wilderness models with a proper pair of Torsen limited-slip differentials front and rear. Can you run the grand highlander through this course? the little off-road course you featured on the grand highlander review was very wimpy, but the review you gave it was convincing... now I'm curious if it can compete with the 4 runner review on this course.

Would a 6 speed 2023 Crosstrek have been successful?

The steep climb at the end might be a tire issue. Wind turbines barely moving in the background, as usual. Scenery loss not worth it.

The shame with the Crosstrek platform is that it's the Impreza but lifted with no downtravel- that info paired with a sub-200hp engine makes a Crosstrek seem kind of redundant versus the Outback wilderness. Interesting look though!

Offroad ish vehicle for roughly 35k without a real spare is ridiculous. So Subaru can revisit this terrible idea, do this same test drive with the over landing donut on one of the wheels would ya please? Other than that, this CTW is intriguing. Great segment as always. Thanks for once again taking us all along Sir.
