It's why we stuck with our '14 FXT. When they offer the FA24DIT (or whatever the current equivalent of the FA20DIT is called) in the Forester, we'll probably have to cave in and finally get a new one even though our UCV (Urban Combat Vehicle) is still running strong with near literally zero downtime (in fact, I'm trying to remember if it's ever been in for anything outside of an alignment).

I do wonder if part of the reason why it made it up the hill was because of software that controls every aspect of where the power is going to is only possible with an automatic transmission. That said, I wouldn't ever do anything that crazy offroad so I am totally ok with a more "primitive" manual drivetrain. my 18 wrx has driven through some insane blizzards and snow banks and all of it was on oem diffs. having more ground clearance in my city would make a lot of sense. and I just have a soft spot for wagons and hatchbacks

Hell yes on the WRX engine and manual, AND wheels that match the Bronze/Gold accents. It would be easier to swap in a dual range transmission. Add in some good quality skid plates and full sized spare on an external carrier then go hit Imogene & Black Bear Pass in Colorado and what trails we're still allowed to drive in Moab. Your reviews are the best and most fun to watch.

Intersting that you just reviewed this. My girlfriend just bought a lightly used 2023 Crosstrek because is the last of the 6-speed manuals. With the CVT we couldn't possibly consider the Wilderness. :( Subaru could sell boatloads of a turbo STI version with manual transmission or at least one with with dual range transfer case and lockers. But honestly, for the price, you're within striking distance of a Tacoma Offroad with the V-6 and manual. I bet it has to do with EPA regulations and gas mileage requirements which are killing off performance vehicles with manual transmissions.

As much as I want to love Subaru, I can't. My 2015 Forester XT has been a money pit with numerous mechanical failures. The fact it's paid for and I have two kids in college, are the only reasons I still have it. 60k front lower control arms replaced due to bushing failure, 65k both front cv shafts replaced, 115k (15k past the powertrain warranty) due to front pinion failure the transmission was replaced because it's internal (because I bitched, SubaruUSA paid $4k of the nearly $9k bill), 145k all four hub bearing assemblies replaced at , and at 160k the ECU had a permanent burned in code causing the car to shutter and idle rough. I am currently at 166k and just had to replace the rear hub assemblies Again! A friend bought a Crosstrek and traded it a year later, reason: three rear hub assemblies crapped out, and even though they got replaced under warranty, it was no bueno.

I was actually very surprised by the body control and cornering on that rally stage! Totally agree they need to make a Crosstrek WRX or STI or XT most likely, whatever they want to call it. My understanding is the main reason they haven't is the naturally aspirated Crossrrek already sells so well they can't produce enough to need to make another model to increase sales to a wider audience.

The snow and dirt option turns off automatically if wheel spin speed higher. BTW, the fuel numbers on the screen are miss tagged for MPG comb and Hwy and for liters per 100 km city is higher than hwy which is inconsistent with mpg rankings .

@@TheSpoovy There are a number of things which influenced my decision. These are the biggest factors: color display is much larger and easy to use, the 10 speaker updated sound system, the updated seats are more comfortable, the extra ground clearance and protective molding around the front, sides and rear, the larger but still quite efficient engine giving a great boost in horse power, the wireless bluetooth connectivity and charging, updated LED fog lights, adaptive cruise control and extra clearance. It also has decent towing if you will be pulling anything such as a boat or camper. I also love the looks. I have had it a little over four months and absolutely love it. I drove an older manual one a few months ago. The chassis and toss ability was ridiculous fun. Seating position felt better than the STI but not bolstering and the body roll was glorious since you could rotate the ass end under hard trail breaking. Biggest downside was engine and gearbox. Typical Subaru feels like you’re fighting the shifter with not much connection and engine was anemic. This would be great with a STI motor and LSD’s or even better a 3.6 H6 for lower end torque and even better sound

the additional heat exchanger is for the cvt. its what allows it to tow more than the non wilderness to keep the cvt fluid from overheating

It’ll probably also increase the longevity of the transmission under normal use as well.

The blank spots next to the interior dash dimmer would be the lift gate button and the memory lift gate button. Since the crosstrek wilderness doesn't have the lift gate those buttons are blank.

I am so glad I got my 2023 Crosstrek Sport with a manual, and the strut tower brace. What a swiss army knife! It eats up deep snow. I drove through a major snowstorm last year and posted the dashcam footage.
