With the arrival of the 2024 Honda Super Cub C125 right around the corner, I felt it would be appropriate to make a video about 5 things you should know before buying one. As a Cub lover, these are things I think that I would have liked to have known before purchasing a brand new one.
It took a lot of effort to make this video and I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it! I appreciate and welcome any feedback in the comments.
**This is NOT a 2024 in the video, it is a 2023 with an aftermarket Yoshimura titanium exhaust**

Hey duderino, riding a bike without a helmet is a big "no, no". I had 2 accidents, one in '93 where I broke my ankle and one in '94 where I broke almost everything except my head. About 1 year ago I tipped over on my CB750 which weighs 420 lbs and my head simply "tapped" the asphalt, no big deal but if I hadn't had my helmet on I would've cracked my head open. So it's your call but I wouldn't.

How in hell does a dealer turn a $3700 bike into $5700 rideaway? Robbery.

Thanks for the comment. This is normal dealer mark up! Taxes, tags, title, delivery, assembly, etc. I agree that it’s crazy!!! That’s why I wanted to let people know! :) Edit: taxes, tag, registration and title alone was $500, I needed it delivered cause the only dealer that had one was really far, then of course the assembly and freight and all the other charges. That’s why many people pay MSRP used for these, because getting one new you pay all the dealer costs. I was willing to do this cause I’m obsessed :)

I'm in Australia. It looks like dealer markups here aren't TOO bad, but there are "other fees and charges". Stamp duty, registration, compulsory insurance. Licencing is almost a government SCAM - it costs nearly $500 just to get a "learners permit" (4 hour practical training course), and almost as much again to get a full licence. That's for someone who already has a drivers licence. On top of that there's a combination of COMPULSORY and "recommended" protective gear. I could buy a bike for around $5k (AUD), but I wouldn't be allowed to even push it over the footpath before spending another couple of thousand :( (current AUD / USD exchange rate is about 0.65 - one Aussie dollar buys 65c USD. $5700 US would be $8770 AUD. For comparison, MSRP on the Honda XR150L is $2971 USD. Outright purchase in Australia is $4898 AUD, but then the government want your bank account to ride it on the road).

The Super Cub's classic style is on par with that of the retro Vespas. It's a beautiful bike. However, the same can be said of the Trail 125, which has a ton more functionality. Conversely, the NAVI undercuts the Super Cub by thousands, yet it offers better storage and MPG. It just doesn't look as cool parked in front of a Starbuck's. Yet another alternative is finding a Rebel 250 in excellent condition for half the cost of the Super Cub

I'm actually heading towards a Honda XR 150L. Started off looking for a second hand AG-90 / CT-110 ("postie bike" - dual range gears set up for a farm), but they're OLD (need to be a mechanic to restore them?) and attract almost antique value pricing. Honda Trail 125 looked like an option. With further research, everything is screaming at me to go for the XR 150L. It'll do everything the "little" ones (Trail / Cub / Grom / etc) will do - and MORE - and is actually cheaper (MSRP under 3k). Oh, btw, I'm in my 50's, have NEVER ridden (let alone owned) a motorbike, but thinking of one for the farm. THANK YOU for the vid, it's really helpful for any non-bikers looking at their entry options :)

Started getting into Kawasaki due to lack of Honda bikes here and price difference. I want to go out on a Honda though. The dealer had a Cub and a Monkey when I stopped in 2 weeks ago. That Monkey reminds me of my 69 Mini Trail so it's got a pull on me but... They also had a CL 500. I've got 4 small bikes already. Enjoy the ride man!

@@Yoshi-Mooch yeah I mean some of the ones I was looking at were pretty close to MSRP too and actually had more miles and I’m like no why would I get used one really close MSRP if I can get a new one but then I found the one I found I was like OK yup I think this one will work unfortunately I found out later that had gotten dumped over and somebody broke one of the rear blinkers and the guy use black electrical tape, and tape it back on there instead of fixing it and he did say that there was nothing wrong with it he lied about that one thing but luckily the wires were still attached so what I did was I gorilla glue the thing back on there and then I glued around it so it was waterproof stayed on and then I painted it black so it would pass inspection. Technically, I was not supposed to repair it that way I was supposed to replace it, but I didn’t feel like it and as far as I know it’s still works. I really don’t understand why people think they can sell their stuff for close to MSRP. I mean I get you save the taxes but no thank you I figured with this one. It had sold a few miles on it that you couldn’t screwed up from lack of maintenance, so that was good and, the table light was the only thing that was actually broken. There were no other scuffs or scratches. I don’t know how the man that one. And I recently had to replace the battery in it. He said it was new, but I’m not so sure that it was. I was thinking about getting the trail version of this, but it was like a little more than 1000 more dollars and it didn’t have the gear in the cater. I really really wanted the gear indicator and I’m glad I got it.

@@Yoshi-Mooch so I have done all the maintenance so far except for one thing I had to have the dealer put the new tire on the rim. But other than that, I’ve done everything I replace the chain the front brake pads I put a 65 L locking box and a rack on the back of the motorcycle in the box is waterproof I added side kickstand, I’ve changed the oil quite a few times. I have done the valve adjustment. I have cut the oil change intervals in half because Honda says 4000 but I’ll do it every two at 8000. I’m gonna clean out the oil spinner. So I bought it at the beginning of October of last year and now I have a little over 5000 miles on it over the winter. I ride it all the time 90 to 95% of my travel is on that thing. A change the sprocket out in the front to change the gearing ratio a little bit it turned fourth gear into overdrive and the lower gear so you can stay in longer. I have back up front brakes rear drum brakes two extra rims with new tires on them for when I swap them out so then I can just change the tire and not have to worry about getting another one on the rim immediately. I’m trying to figure out when I need to adjust the timing chain and change that out at some point because I guess with this it’s not like a car at a certain point you have to adjust that change it out every once in a while and change the tensioner along with it, I also have the service manual so that’s been very helpful. I forgot I know I’ve done a few other things to it. so I’m really curious to see how many miles I can get out of the thing while doing all of the maintenance that is necessary and a little bit more but yeah I’m never selling this thing by the time I’m done with it. It’s going to be completely used up. my goal is at least 100 to 150,000 miles. The service manual was pretty awesome. It even has a map of the whole electrical system, but I don’t really think I can do much with that. Soon one of my goals is to put a small front rack on it with another smaller locking waterproof box for the tools that I carry around. I’m also going to run a quad lock cord up from the battery so then I can put power into the battery or charge your phone from the battery but that requires me to take some of the Baker plastic panels off and I just haven’t had chance to do that yet because I cannot have the bike down for too long because except for the few days that I get off I need to ride it every day so projects have to wait until I have time to do themexcept for me, of course that has to be done

Super cub and underbone motorcycles are very common type of motorbike you see here in South East Asia. Its the cheapest motorbike but very durable, efficient and probably will survive armageddon lol. But knowing how America market and culture are so much different, like the expensive entry price point for such small cc engine bike, or their love for big engines, big cities, long roads and highways (I mean look at 5:26 to see how big the highwat is) etc. mean that super cub will struggle there. But I think it's still a great bike for those who stay in small city and town, university town and it's a good bike for UberEat or Doordash food delivery

They cost about $1200 brand new and is a straight plug and play into the older super cubs (old carburated ones, FI versions have different engine mounts)

@@tristan6509 So just by coincidence, this is related to what I do for a living. Importing as a private citizen is more difficult than you think in Florida. Sure, you’ll pay $1200 for the bike, then you’ll pay $1200 in taxes and import fees then another $1000 to do tags, title, and everything else. Not to mention it has to be inspected by US customs in addition to Florida Division of Motorist services. This process takes months and your bike can be rejected. There’s a reason you don’t see a ton of Cubs on US streets that aren’t sold in America… Because it’s a hassle and almost more hassle than what it’s worth. I could get one that had been imported to another state and bring it here, the problem is, the person who has undergone the import process is going to pass that cost on to the buyer. I know the Cub is pricey in the US. I won’t argue with you. But if one can afford it, then that simply isn’t a factor. :) Have a great day.

@@Yoshi-Mooch I'm replying to the original comment about canada which has the 10 year import rule And they don't sell the cub there officially so you have to get them used. And $1200 is not the motorcycle but the engine. Daytona sells a 24hp engine for $1200 which is a huge upgrade over the 10hp.

The super cub has a miniscule amount of storage for a 125cc bike because it only has a single seat With a honda wave or blade you can actually fit an entire helmet under the seat. On a wave the fuel tank is moved under the passenger seat and the front part is for luggage. So to fix this most cub owners typically install a grocery basket on the front similar to a bicycle
