I fully agree regarding the keyless feature, absolutely un necessary on the Cub. Thank god they didn’t put on the new CT125. Other things that I would have added to your list is the lack of a kick start and at least an option for spoked wheels.

The blue theme on the bike is a nod back to the Honda C100 and C102 of the sixties. In fact Honda have been very clever when designing this bike in picking up on the original styling as used on the early cubs. The red single seat is another carry over. Personally I think it’s a great looking little bike.

About the keyless feature, Can a thief hotwire it or is it just for convenience? Honda stopped bringing ANF Innovas to europe in 2012 and when mine got stolen I thought I'd get something newer than a 10 year old model. Do Honda bring Innovas to the US? I hear they still make and sell them in south east asia but doesn't they bring it west, why? Anyway, super cub it is :)

I drove a c90 when I was 16-17.... loved the 4 stroke sound, the looks and the comfy ride. There was a c50-c70-c90 and most components were compatible between those bikes. The c50 had a sleek but stylisch seat with white sides and a red Honda logo on the rear. The c90 seat was much wider and nice for long rides. The bike was about 30 years old then and that was about 30 years ago, the bike's problably still riding somewhere, amazing. It's good to see the front dives instead of coming up when using front brake. I had gearbox changed for a 4 gear, I see it's stock now. Top speed seems a bit low, the C90 handled 60mph without trouble....

Seats: I think the Goldwing has the only factory seat I got on with straight away. Color: That white will change color depending upon the background color (well, all colors do that). You need a Faraday Cage for your fob. I.e. a metal box that surrounds it to prevent RF from leaking out. Like a little mint box. Test to be sure it works well enough. She is really too cute to hate....Oh, that screw will also take a regular screw driver, and possibly an American Dime. Try a coin (Like we carry change around anymore!). But a P-38 would work too. I'll let you google it (use P-38 opener).

The key fob issue close to the bike when camping is easily solved by putting it in one of the mesh faraday cases available. Some of us always carry a Swiss Army knife and so have a Phillips screwdriver at hand at all times. Also a small lithium jump starter could be carried in your top box if you suffer from a flat battery. Oh and by the way lots of bikes have either a 12v power socket or usb socket on them.

Agreed, the seat is a pain and Corbin wants too much for a replacement so you're stuck with it. Another problem I found is that if you leave the alarm on for an extended amount of time ( nearing a month) the battery dies and you are locked out. One thing I've noticed about the cub is that the foot shifter controls the clutch. You are working the clutch with your foot. If you push the shifter down forward or backwards it disengages the clutch. When you let off of the shifter that is when the clutch reengages regardless of RPMs. So you can "pop" the clutch and do a wheelie by shifting to first, revving the engine, and then letting off the shifter or you can easy into a gear by letting up slowly off the shifter after pushing down on it.

I wish this bike has a kickstarter as a backup system in the case the battery is weak. Also, a regular key without all the so called high tech electronics. Simplicity = reliabilty. In the 2022 model, Honda added a passenger seat and made the color dark. A good improvement but the classic two colors scheme should be an option. It is important to design the bikes to work not just for the fun of it. I used my Kawasaki Ninja 250 to transport small packages to the post office using a backpack. I wish it had side bags.

I agree. The electronic ignition is complicated and can strand a rider. My girlfriend refuses to ride my Honda Click 150cc because the electronic Key confuses her. I have had a flat battery and I was totally stranded. All bikes should have a kick start for a flat battery. When I looked at your model super cub the seat position caused me to say no, I will not buy one. I bought a Honda Wave 125cc instead. I believe the bike designers don’t actually ride them, or they are all 4 feet tall. I am only 5 foot 6 inches tall. In 1983 I bought a new Honda cub with a bench seat. The ergonomics of that bike were excellent. It had weaknesses, Drum Brakes, inadequate lights, and that hard suspension. You see Japan has excellent smooth roads. The ridges on the Honda Wave and Honda Click seats push into my coccyx bone and give me back ache. The designers produce what looks comfortable on paper, but the seats are a real pain in the butt. These bikes are so close to the perfect solution for commuter transport, I have bought 9 of them in my long life. Started riding motorbikes 60 years ago. I find 125cc is plenty of power for me. The speed limit is 90kph or 56mph and I prefer to ride slower like the locals in Thailand, more comfort and safer.

Um, if "flat" battery means "Dead" battery then bike won't start with a kicker unless it has a magneto ignition--if it relies on a coil, you still need battery.

@@jerryjones2818 I"m 78 years old. Yes bikes in the 1950s when I was young would have had magnetos. My batteries go "flat" that's Australian for "dead," on my modern bikes because sometimes I may not ride for 2 weeks. I always buy new bikes and often have trouble within 3 months. I am living in country Thailand and cannot buy a trickle charger, even though I am sure they are available. Cannot buy a tubeless tyre puncture repair kit either. Thanks for the information. It explains why kick starts and crank handles became obsolete. That and the pain of it all. New Honda Wave 125cc with Disc Brakes is equal to USD $1,600. That is cheap transport. A Honda PCX-160 or ADV-150 will set you back around USD $2.700. On the road no more to pay. How sweet it is!

Could be bollux but I read somewhere that the gear lever was designed like that so Japanese businessmen wouldn’t mark their shiny shoes when changing gear. One of the design requirements was that you could ride it one handed while carrying a tray of soba noodles. I like it, but I don’t like keyless ignition. it’s too expensive and it needs a bench seat.

I might be in the minority because I actually like keyless ignition (although I agree it does look wrong on the Supercub). My Honda Forza has it and if you press and hold the middle button (the picture of the key) you can turn the key off and on- the led on the fob will turn green or red accordingly. You could then deactivate a key and hide it on the bike?- assuming you can find a space for it! It’s a feature I wish they’d put on the BMW keyless fob.

Hello. Great video, I really enjoyed it. I have the 1981 version and it solves many of your complaints. It has a key. It has a long seat for 2 people, or one tall guy. The gearbox is worn in enough that it doesn't kick back, or make the chain slap when you shift at higher revs. It has the white fairing. But no charging point. I am fine with that. It means you need to stop off at the coffee shop or the bar to take a break and charge your phone there, while also charging yourself. Cheers!

I have an Innova (same gearbox I think) and of course there is a clutch, which disengages when you press the pedal (up or down) and re-engages as you release it. So if you release it with finesse, realising you are re-engaging the clutch, you avoid wheel lock, chain slap, engine jumping up and hitting you in the gonads etc. I'm sure you know this, but maybe some of your viewers don't. I love it, even if I get momentarily wrong 'muscle memory' in my gear-change foot when jumping off my Innova and onto my Speedmaster.

Question - what happens if you start the bike and go away with ur key? does it turn off?
@thejubieexperience
@thejubieexperience 2 жыл бұрын
I'm torn about it. I both like and hate the keyless. I think the Super Cub would turn off if the bike gets out of range of the fob. I think it's so you can warm it up without worrying about it walking off on you. With my CT125, I'm always worried about it when it's warming up at home, but its way more sought after than the C125. You can test it out by leaving the fob in your house and see if you could take off on it. I got my C125 tore apart right now, otherwise I'd try it out. And the keyless start runs the battery down real fast. My biggest complaint is the step through design. They stuffed the battery under the seat, taking up a little more space in the stepthrough area. I have a box on mine too and the only options are to either fully bend my leg while I throw it over the seat (my current method) or step through. The few inches make a big difference. In the old ones, I could step through easily without scuffing up the legshield. I'm thinking of getting something to protect it, maybe one of those luggage racks or a tank protector for a traditional bike

I''ve owned my cub at least 2 years. I've developed a new hatred for the keyless fob system! I only have one key so I ordered another one from the dealer as a backup. It arrived and I read the instructions at the dealer before buying the key. I'm almost certain that if I go through all the trouble to program the Cub for a new key, it disables the old key. I'll guess that new Cubs with two keys both have the same ID. This is never ever the case if you buy a replacement. I think I won't have a backup key. If I lose it, I'll go buy one at the dealer. It took several months from order to delivery. Now they'll just have it on the shelf in case I need it.

I agree on all points. How dumm this electronic key works. Engineering with a tunnel vision. The light blue/white colour: if they would paint it in the same colour as the bike. Gives it more body. Or let the client make his complete own choise when he wants a brand new one. I would choose classical Honda colors from the '80s including stickers. Gearbox, o.m.g. I don't see anything in that style. Normal clutch and box please. Up and down shifting in the normal way. Seat: correct. I still have got my '85 Honda MT8. That seat style would be perfect for the super Cub. Great review! Thanks.

The colour scheme was chosen to match the early C100 SuperCub. The story goes that the dark blue represents the Sea of Japan, and the light blue the sky of Japan. The red seat was an accident. Apparently they couldn’t decide on a seat colour for the first SuperCub until Soichiro Honda was crouched next to the machine wearing his red hat. They had a eureka moment and went with it!

If you're able to find a place on the bike to hide the spare FOB where it would be protected from the elements and undamaged from exposure you could put a pull-tab of plastic between the battery and contact. You may have seen this implemented on retail products that come with batteries. The hardest part of this project would be to find the magic hiding spot. You could put it in a water-tight bag. Regarding the dead battery issue: Mine came with a battery tender connector with 15A inline fuse, you can buy or build cables with clamps for jumping or charging the battery. Check the polarity if coming out of the bike to connect to another battery. Also that 15A might not be enough if you try to start it while connected. An auxiliary SAE plug would be a nice addition. Working my way through your Super Cub videos, thanks for posting!

Keyless ignition is an issue. It is always consuming battery charge. My charger will cycle the battery over a given time period keeping sulfation to minimum, even AGM's.

my first bike was a Ct90....seat was exact same issue you refer to. I had a padded seat that mounted to the rear rack and I usually sat in the exact same place you talk about. My plan was to make a custom seat and seat pan that would extend back to that spot but still allow for the rack to be used.

Spot on; the seat and shape of the seat restricts your ability to move position, while a bench seat (Honda Wave or older 110cc Dream in Thailand) gives you that choice and you can take a pillion. You can get a gear changer leaver (Honda part number) that has the normal gear changer where you can change down with your toe as well as the back section to change with your heel for about £6. Ask your friendly Honda dealer. It just slides on the same shaft. That keyless is the reason that I would not buy one. You would have thought that on a retro bike the old original key would be a feature. I have a Honda Monkey and on that I would prefer no remote key fob and just a standard key. Less electronic gizmos, less problems. Mr Fish, you know you should have bought that Honda Monkey that you raved about with a Kim Kadashian ass seat.

Bench type seat is a necessity on any 'step thru' I ride the slightly older version of the Wave 110i...the ANF125 Innova Fi...perfect for me...except maybe too many plastic panels to crack...I've had 4 Innovas since 2007...they're cheap here second hand since no-one buys them..all (almost all 99.9%) of the delivery bikes are scooters...I hate twist and go bikes...I like to choose my gears...so I don't have 5 things I hate about Innovas and Waves... sometimes I would prefer cast wheels like the Wave because corroded spokes and rims really annoys me...makes it look untidy...guess I'll have to get a new rim next year and the other a year after...the C125 Super Cub is way too expensive..as is the trail version which is a bit better of the 2

When you shift down a gear... I remember from the 90's when you shift down the gear to a super cub you shift down and hold it there for a Second. Then it is like neutral. Rise the rpm and let the gear come in then while the rpm are still hi.

You can play around with the gear bike. Somewhere between while changing gears there are short moments when clutch is engaging. When you get used to it you can do rev matching with these too.

Ok....great video. I very much enjoyed it. Now...I live in Vietnam and I have a Honda wave, which is pretty much the same platform just a bit sportier looking. Same transmission though with the same shitty shift pattern. A bit of advise for your down shifting. When your shifting down, hold the shift lever down and then rev the engine slightly before letting up on the shift lever. This allows you to rev match. It takes a bit of getting used to however it makes down shifting so much smoother. Practice a bit where there's no traffic and it should only take a few minutes to get the concept down. I hope this helps you avoid that wheel chirp. It will also give your clutch more life.

It represents the sea & sky around Japan. In US down in front is down a gear. Depress rear to shift up. I installed a fused battery lead which has a cap on the plug end. The bike is always on a trickle charger & the lead tucks under the seat. This bike also has a proper charging circuit built into the alternator. I love my Super Cub & acknowledge your complaints.

As someone the wrong side of 70 and also short. The only problem I have with my new super cub is same I have with all motorcycles I have owned. The seat is too high. My second modification after raising and extending the mirrors. I can now see the road behind me and not just my shoulders and elbows, is to get the seat lowered. One inch thick reconstituted foam is you friend.

I turn the fob off when not riding so it doesn't run down the battery. Would hate to stop somewhere and have the battery in the fob die. And you know the U.S. model has the shift pattern opposite of the rest of the world. It does make it easier to downshift. I treat the lever like a clutch pedal on a car after the downshift when I lift up my foot.

@@Mrfish2015 yes but it does make the key light flash. If the battery went dead while riding the key light would start flashing. You would have to plan then where you want to stop and turn off the bike because that would be it. I think there is a way to get it going again but it would require getting into the battery box area, which of course require the screwdriver you couldn't get because of the dead battery in the fob. 😡

Probably a bit late, but did you know that you can deactivate the fob by holding the round button down until the red indicator on the fob flashes. You can then hide it on the bike if you can find a secure spot, or leave it in your tent next to the bike. Re the other complaints as many have said, the two tone blue is from the original cub and represents the colour of the sky and sea, the gearshift takes some getting used to and if you're looking for a quick getaway, the cub isn't the bike for you. Thanks for the review, your little big adventure with teapot1 was partly responsible;e for me buying a cub last year 👍🇦🇺

I think a clutch lever and normal clutch/gears would improve the design. Not fitting it in 2020 is weird. It adds more control especially with jurky fuel injection. SH125 is nicer and the CT125 is better utilliy.

I bought a SC a week ago. 2021 model with the red/cream colors. I had to buy it before they were all gone and the ugly 2022 grey model gets here. Traded my Kawasaki Versys 650 for it. I wanted something much smaller. I live in a small town in the American mid-west, and everything is within 3 miles and it never gets over 35mph. The Kawi was not a good urban bike. (but great at highways and country roads) The SC is a lot of fun.

A more normal gear shifter on the ‘21 cub. It still has the heel shift option but the toe part on mine anyway looks like a normal shifter. I never use the heel shifter but that’s just me. Don’t need it. As far as shifting goes, come on!😂 The seat for me at 6’ is uncomfortable longer than an hour in the saddle but l don’t have issues that I need to scoot back. I agree on the charging port, I’m going to get a Kitaco usb accessory. Not a big deal. Safe travels!

It’s a technique where you rev slightly whilst engaging the clutch also known as blipping the throttle , and it makes the gear shift smoother for aggressive down shifts .. it’s something that easier to understand when seen practically

I'm tempted to buy one of these. Always wanted one and was really disappointed when they finally came out at like $6,500AUD new. Now I'm just starting to see 2019 models for sub-$5000. My cb125e has bent forks, a back break that inexplicably 'clicks' into place (not sure why I ride this thing), a slow-leaking tyre and cosmetic damage all over. Other option is to sell it and start driving the 97 Corolla more.
