I am proud of my work with Andrew Lownie in 2024. He has been sounding the bell about Government cover-ups, the censorship of history, lack of transparency & accountability for many, many years. His best-selling biographies reveal uncomfortable truths & many surprising discoveries! His appearances on The Vintage Read Show allowed me to delve into various topics and people who have been given the “Lownie treatment”. From Lord Louis Mountbatten’s dark secrets to the possible mysterious murder of John Costello, these conversations have only led to more questions. I look forward to continuing our collaboration in 2025.

Thanks Shauna, I loved your interview with Andrew. In my opinion, if a public figure does things that can't stand the light of day or has things to hide, than they should not have done those things. Else you have to withdraw from public life. Public figures should be figures that example virtue and decency, they should stand for what is righteous. So i can only admire Andrew for seaking the truth. It made me think of two quotes of Mathama Ghandi: Many people, especially ignorant people, want to punish you for speaking the truth, for being correct, for being you. Never apologize for being correct, or for being years ahead of your time. If you’re right and you know it, speak your mind. Speak your mind. Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is still the truth. And: You assist an administration most effectively by obeying its orders and decrees. An evil administration never deserves such allegiance. Allegiance to it means partaking of the evil. A good man will therefore resist an evil system or administration with his whole soul.

I have had problems in the past getting open records in my town. Many town departments and police chiefs were corrupt. We had to get the state Attorney General's office to order them to provide the records. It was a citizen effort and we succeeded in getting all of them out, and the Police Chief lost his law officer license. Corrupt people get into places of power with a lot of energy, but too many citizens don't want to be the ones to step up and struggle through the proper process to get the worms and clean up the government wherever they find problems. Ooooh, governments hate open records.

The distinction between “working royal” and “born into the royal family” is being drawn tighter all the time. 105 years is reasonable. Files once opened should not be re closed. There has been any least one bio of Louie Mountbatten (one I read some two decades ago but forgot the name of the author) detailing his ferocious ambition coupled with less than stellar professional outcomes (?) and utter selfishness (my take) that made me wonder about his heroic reputation. The book was not h*ll bent on dishing the dirt for its own sake. That biography dealt with adult liaisons of both Mountbattens in a somewhat discreet way. The one name I do remember was Nehru's, said to be a lover to both spouses. Mountbatten's penchant for boys, whether underage or on the cusp of being legally consenting young persons, was not explored. The rumors and the alleged facts have gained momentum, as far as I'm aware, in recent years. As far as Edwina M. goes, even one of her daughters (Patricia?) did speak about the revolving door of young officers when in India. Edwina came across, to me, as a 'champagne socialist' and utterly self centered. It seems her main goal in life was to satisfy whatever she desired then and there, no sense of consistent responsibility towards family and community. It is a very harsh take on my part but if even her daughter(s) could be so clinical about her/their mother, I can justify being shocked every time another person lifts the veil surrounding this couple's life.
@SierraNovemberKilo18 күн бұрын
It is my understanding that competent sailors would happily have pushed Mountbatten overboard and sailed away pronto if they could. He was a disaster to the safety of the fleet. His obnoxious peccadillos didn't aid his case either.

Shauna, I'm just wondering what's the purpose of uncovering uncomfortable truths if no Justice would be served especially if they are dead. In the Andrew case however you look it, it tarnishes the entire royal family especially the Late Queen since it happened during her reign. As for royal finances, of what benefit will it be for the public to know how it's collected given that there's no respect for the monarch it may come tumbling down simply based on the fact of Costs of Living crisis. Somethings should be kept private even the late Queen knew that and she was above reproach in my opinion.

@thevintageread Shauna things are not as black and white as you assume it would. Also, it's probably worthwhile to examine these relationships and predelictions within the context of the time. Interracial relationships have been viewed very differently depending on the milieu of the period when the relationship occurs. Many queer relationships where once classed as psychological diseases by doctors during certain periods (often an intensified importance placed on religion during a period of history leads to this kind of classification, it seems), and when a relationship is itself classified as immoral or even criminal, this creates an avenue for coertion and blackmail.

To which she was informed oops yes that"s your, they negotiated with the Palace being offered the chance to manage the sites which they declined. Charles now is reaping in the huge benefits but has made a big donation for use by the poor (could not some of the money taken from the elderly heating allowance have been taken from that?). Seems the Queen was very financially canny, billionsire Charles seems a bit greedy and should return the sea foreshore back to the people especially in this time of huge fuel price increase and having to import from dubious suppliers also some of Charles good friends in hotter climates. Some things I believe are better left in the past. There could be security issues to the royal family to this present day, as to why certain things being shutdown to prevent such. The issue as to that scandal as to the second world war, certain alleged allegiances could damage the royal family as to the present day. Also that things are often difficult to disprove, especially that long ago, but are believed by some, especially those with a certain bias, as if facts, that instead being often simply hearsay or taken totally out of context.Look for example the allegations Harry and Meghan made about Archie, which in fact were nothing more than hearsay, that a conversation ever happened, and how King Charles and Catherine Princess of Wales were defamed by such.Look as to the royal family being accused of things that happened hundreds of years ago and that they are being asked to pay, that none of them personally were ever involved.Oprah in the Harry and Meghan interview wanted dirt on the royal family, because that was the ticket to a fortune whether it ever happened she would still make millions.

Shauna, your interviews are excellent, particularly Andrew Lownie and Lady Colin Campbell. The extensive subject matter touched on here offers a wealth of material worthy of closer inspection. My thoughts - Andrew's reference to Huw Edwards' child pornography as "sexual quirks" makes light of what is, in fact, a criminal act. It's important to make that distinction for the sake of child pornography victims everywhere, and for viewers who may think child porn is a "quirk" and not a criminal act. The proximity of the Queen's Funeral to Edwards' arrest, as well as Andrew's references to his research of past members of the Royal Family, may result in the 'horns effect' on the Royal Family which is a shame if material is unnecessarily sensationalised, or distorted without proper context. Andrew's experiences of research are fascinating, if a little scary, his experiences relating to John Costello research, for example, need to be taken seriously. It also occurred to me that the letters and handwritten communications that Andrew seeks today are now often cyber-communications - making it possibly even more difficult to obtain for present-day and future research. Thank you for your work, Shauna. Always anticipated, and much appreciated. Viewer from NZ.

Shauna I was so surprised to see an Australian archivist reading from King Edward VIII's letters to his "bit" on the excellent SBS series Every Family has its Secrets, now on NETFLIX. None too flattering, I would have to say. I was surprised since the royal family has also a hold over our national archives, too. It took years of legal argument to reveal letters between the Governor General & the Queen.

This is the protection that the plume and candle want back. It's the reason for fighting the security being removed .it's the IPP status and being able to slap a D order onto things that they desire and miss the most, even more than his family. He's so used to having all his wrong doings covered up, we only know a fraction of what he got up to until he stepped down from being a working royal , it makes you wonder what they have done since, that they need the men in grey suits that he hates so much, but needs their protection .

I totally agree with you! I hope you get support, but doubtful 😔 most of the rich and others of influence, have connections! Us normals, are not even considered!

I know Andrew wants to write books and needs information but its naive to think files won't be sealed for various reasons. Even here in the backwaters of Australia, Andrew would face closed files concerning our government and other nations. They may or may not be open one day. A closed file does not explicitly equal corruption.

He is one of the UK’s most renowned historians. He is talking about files that shouldn’t be closed and used to be publicly available.

I wonder how Andrew and Shauna would feel if people exposed all their private life

Shauna, when I buy Andrew Lownie's new book about the Yorks, do you think I could get him to sign it for me? I live in the US....was wondering....I am going to buy it as soon as it comes out, I would just love to have him sign it...don't know how that would happen since he is in the UK, and I'm in Little Rock Arkansas. US.
