I'll wait 2 years to see what teh long term reliability and durability is of a turbo/hybrid setup, including the cost of repairs. However, I suppose costly repairs will be taken care of by the warranty at first. I'll be interested to see how many Tacomas will now be deemed "totaled" by insurance companies because of how expensive it will be to replace a turbo/hybrid engine. Nowadays it seems as if some cars are classified as "totaled' when in the past they would have been repaired.

I personally predict that Tacoma will lose sales as people realize that teh hybrid/turbo setup does not last as long as the old setup. The advantage of a Frontier or ridgeline is that they are still naturally aspirated,w hci should make the last 300k miles and more. Was it really that hard to pass with the old engines? How did so many people manage to do it for 20 years? It's not worth the fact that these new Tacomas cost more and will last less. For many of us, it's not about carplay or other features. it's about getting the best vehicle at the lowest price.

It was a major refresh in the same vein as the new Camry. Still basically the same truck as the 2005.
@damilolaakanni
@damilolaakanni 6 ай бұрын
According to Wikipedia, the 2016 model was similar to the 2015 mechanically and dimensionally, but there was a minor update in 2018 that updated the infotainment and audio controls, and a major refresh in 2020 (three years ago). However, they consider the 2016-2023 Tacoma as the third generation, that is, a complete redesign.
@brianroskelly2177
@brianroskelly2177 6 ай бұрын
@@damilolaakanni That is true, but they're saying the same for the 2025 Camry that rides on the same platform and has basically the same body-in-white as the outgoing model. It's all a case in semantics, but let's be real here, the 2016-2023 Tacoma was not much different from the 2005-2015 model aside from a few design tweaks and a different engine and transmission.
@barsaf9989
@barsaf9989 6 ай бұрын
Yes you are right. People just call it a refresh for some reason. It was a redesign. All body panels have a completely different design and a different wheelbase. How is that not a redesign. It's even called the 3rd gen lol.

Turbo adds complexity. It is actually cheaper to make a NA V6 because the tolerances do not need to be as good in a lower reving NA motor.
@themiddlekingdom9121

@@tomm1109 Of course, more parts which are more moving parts and complex to the current trucks, and even cars now have turbos in their engines, more parts that make the automakers to make more money on the parts. Unfortunately, the consumers have to pay more on the new cars just to save a few dollars of fuel.

If they are making more money than buy their stock. The I4 Turbo is actually less complex than the V6, which makes it slightly cheaper to produce. Since it is less complex and it is built better I expect it to have better longevity.

I think the turbocharged engine provides a balance of power and efficiency (though not much more than the outgoing V6). Toyota has been making turbocharged engines since the MK III Supra, so I'm sure they know what they're doing. People are just afraid of turbocharged engines because maintenance (and repair, if necessary) are usually more expensive and labour intensive than their N/A counterparts. If you take good care of your engine, it should last a long time.
@tomm1109

If you are doing anything at altitude a 4 turbo is better than a V6. If you are doing any kind of real work that involves idling the truck then the 4 turbo is better at saving gas.
