Hey Skiers! Wish we had more skiing footage for this one, but filming touring skis is challenging for several reasons. Also, if you feel like you're seeing more motion blur than usual, you are, it's not your eyes playing tricks on you. The shutter speed on the camera was off slightly. You may not notice anything. Anyways, enjoy!

Amazing comparison and overview! As a ski tourer since 35 years in the Italian and Swiss Alps, these days I tend to live with a 2-ski quiver. One "light" ski around 90mm for general long missions, spring touring, serious staff - K2 Wayback, Kastle TX, Salomon MTN... One "fun" ski around 100mm from the freeride segment for winter powder touring - Elan Ripstick 96/102, Bent Chetler 100...

Hey guys, I skiied a Katana for a few seasons & loved them. Towards the end of the season I took them in to get a spring tune up for a road trip & got a call from the shop. I had broken one of the skis under foot, both edges were blown out. But I got a few really good seasons out of them & bought the Blaze 106's. Which I really like, but not near as fast as the Katanas.

It's pretty funny when Bob says "yeah" to what Jeff has said and then goes ahead to say the exact opposite. Jeff: We should be able to get through these quickly because touring skis are all used in the same way. Bob: Yeah, this *shouldn't* go quickly because with touring skis there are important trade-offs. Jeff: These skis are more similar than all-mountain skis. Bob: Yeah, there are wildly different kinds of touring (requiring different kinds of skis) whereas on-piste skiing is on-piste skiing.

One of my favourite categories, great! Now whats left is Touring bindings. After a season with Zero G 95 I would say your observations are spot on. It is a very stiff ski and combined with a pure tech binding and a rock hard Technica Zero G Pro you get a harsh ride. Uphill is awesome of course, used to tour with Bent100, Shift and Hawx XTD and the difference is night and day. The difference down the hill is also night and day though. That long radius is really weird the first time, it happened exactly what you said, you tip the ski and lose balance because they keep going straight 😅

Bob and Jeff! I watch almost all of your videos. Nobody covers details quite like you guys! Thank you so much for your masterclasses. I have a question, I have a Backland 100 and a Blaze 94 for outbounds/inbounds respectively and love both. I'm in the market for a powder ski that can do both (hybrid) and from everything you've said over the last few seasons, I'm between the Atomic Backland 109 and the Volkl Blaze 114. I am a slower skier who likes to turn, not a charger. Want something agile, light, and will use inbounds 80% of the time. So the ski also needs to be at least average at handling chop, higher trafficked resort areas, and windblown Westcoast ice weirdness. Is the Backland too light and does putting a heavy Duke PT help with the weight and composure and make the ski more "hybridy"?
@SkiEssentialsАй бұрын
Thanks so much! I (Bob) have been more impressed with the composure of the Blaze 114 than the Atomic, while Jeff feels the other way. I do think the Blaze has more to offer in terms of both stability and driftiness, as the profile is a lot flatter than that of the Atomic. That said, if you're in bounds 80% of the time, that camber comes in handy, as does the narrower waist width. I'd say you're getting at least average handling while the Blaze's performance bumps up in that department. The Duke is a pretty hefty binding, it will not affect the downhill capacity in any negative way, only positive. You'll notice it on the uphills.

I can't decide between the Corvus and the Draco! They both appeal to me in different ways. I love charging, I love jumping, I love techy skiing, it's hard to pick... I like the weight for the downhill performance, with some ATK pins on them. Which ski do you think has the edge in tighter scenarios, no fall zone couloirs/skimo sort of terrain? I do a lot of that here in the Canadian Rockies. Also got to get the WNDR Alpines on the wall next time! Thanks for an awesome video
@SkiEssentialsАй бұрын
The Draco just has much more of a modern freeride style to it while the Corvus is more traditional. The tail of the Corvus will hold up better in sketchy situations, but I'd rather be on the Draco in wider open spaces where creativity and mobility is a big factor.

I demo’d the DPS Pagoda Tour 106’s last winter for a resort lap and I was blown away at how well they skied and how light they are. They’re very much not in my budget but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a used pair. They had no chatter, playful and confident feel that I could confidently put over edge and go faster than any other true touring ski I’ve used at Eldora. I just don’t quite understand why their feel and construction is so unique compared to the rest of the market.
@SkiEssentialsАй бұрын
They just do a great job by sourcing higher quality materials. We talk about this a lot--cars are all made from metal, plastic, rubber, and cloth, but a Lexus feels a lot different than a Ford. Same with skis--they're all some combination of wood, metal, carbon, plastic, and fiberglass, but some skis just feel different.
@PatrickHennessey1764Ай бұрын
I would love to hear your recommendation for a ski for big days in the backcountry for steep, technical and firm conditions, but also the ability to navigate steepish tight treens on a run out. I am curious because when I think steep and technical I think longer turning radius less tail rocker for better edge confidence, but when you reduce that angle of the slope and add tight trees I would think those attributes make it far less agile and maneuverable. Just curious your thoughts :)
@PatrickHennessey1764Ай бұрын
Also curious the difference between M-tour 99 (labeled unisex) and M-tour 100. They appear to have significant weight differences
@SkiEssentialsАй бұрын
I think the Black Crows skis make good sense here, the Navis as a good mid-option with the Corvus being a stronger setup. You do pay for it a bit with weight, but that's what gets you the stability and technical prowess. The M-Tour 99 and 100 do feature different builds and shapes, following the change in the M-Pro series, so I'm not surprised that they have different weights.

Of the top of my head Favtion Machine Mini and Line Vision are some of the only others which have deep tail rocker lines, and low camber.

It sounds like you can achieve similar things with the Locator 112 and Draco despite different ski designs. How do they compare in terms of powder, variable snow performance and skiing stance?
@SkiEssentialsАй бұрын
The taper of the shovel in the Locator and the straighter cut make it a surfy and drifty ski but not a lot of playfulness. You could use the Draco as a full-on resort powder ski and be totally happy, even when conditions degrade. I would not say the same about the Locator, which I find to be a powder-exclusive product.

The Backland has more pep and snap to it while the Locator is smoother and more drifty. I'd rather ski pure powder in the Locator while the Backland is more of a complete and well-rounded ski. If it's firm and technical at all, the Atomic would be my choice.
@tjb8841Ай бұрын
you mention the Wayback 106 having less rocker and the Locator having more. In my experience (with the Wayback 98 and Locator 112), that’s not quite accurate. Yes the Locator has more tail splay, but the Wayback has much deeper (tail) rocker lines, and far less camber, leading to an overall looser feeling.
@furpiiАй бұрын
How do you like the Locator 112? U use it purely for touring?
@tjb8841Ай бұрын
@ yes, just touring. I suppose if you had a dee- day inbounds, it would be fine too. If the snow is deep and soft, a super light ski is not a problem. There are good reviews on powder and blister. Better than I could tell you from a few hundred feet of descending I did on them (2 days) in powder, and a few laps on groomers to get used to them.
@bobk5872Ай бұрын
Another banger comparison vid fellas! I would think the length of the ski is "essential" when you give us a ski weight, even more important in this touring comparison. Otherwise things get misleading as proven with your Waybacks which should be switched in your wall ordered by weight.
@SkiEssentialsАй бұрын
We discuss in the video that the length disparity exists and that it should be noted by viewers. The Wayback, for example, we either had in a 186 or a 172 and felt that the longer one was a better fit here.
@ayrtondickАй бұрын
The “Carve-Touring” category deserves serious consideration! Which skis would you nominate?? (assume downhill performance is more important than light weight)
@SkiEssentialsАй бұрын
On this wall, I think you have to include the DPS 100 and 105 due to the full carbon stiffness. You could also go a bit heavier to more of an alpine ski like the Head Kore series. Those are lighter than some of the skis on the Crows side of the wall and are considerably better carvers.

Just put Shifts and keep rockin'. This is what I am thinking to do but not sure 110 or 120. I am by no means an expert and most probably skiessentials are right, but to me they seem quite different. Less tail rocker, stiffer, directional ski while Bent 110 has much more rocker tip and tail, softer, center mountpoint. The fact that serious big mountain freeriders use Backland instead of Bents, is telling me these skis are not the same. Having a very light and stiff Zero G, I would say it is not much fun.

Great reviews and comparison of different styles here. I think that lining the skis up based on weight, but having different lengths across the board, leading to narrower skis weighing in more than their wider counterparts is a little misleading. The wayback 98 is lighter than the 106 in the same size. The Corvus in the same length as the Echo 106 is a heavier ski. But yeah going of manufacturer's stated weights may make things more accurate. Still love the comparison though!

@SkiEssentials > Great review as usual 👍. Just a remark regarding the BC Camox Freebird: the most recent model isn’t 96 under foot but 95! The shape changed for 2022-2023 season with new construction as well. So the sample you were discussing is really old one. « …The new Camox uses a similar core as the popular Orb Freebird where all of the poplar wood is removed for a paulownia-only core, drastically reducing the weight. That reduction in wood stiffness is then reinforced with carbon fibers, glass fibers, and a titanal mounting plate. They also shortened the length of the ABS sidewall to eliminate more weight and give the tip and tail a little more flex… » Could you get the 95 and test it? Would be great to have your feeling vs the old 96! Thanks.
