You say at the beginning you look for your competitors how many referring domains they have, but lets say they have 300 and you only have 50 and now you start building in 1 month like 250 additional links this could actually harm your page because it does look unnatural to google

Spot on, mate. It is always best to spread the links out over a 12 month period. If you build them all, google can reduce the power of the backlinks
