That has always been the case. It's actually pretty rare for an early release to make it all the way. "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991) was a famous example of a movie released really early that did make it to win a whole year later, but there are only a few that have been able to do that.

This year’s race might be super boring/predictable because of that, so don’t try to get a surprise nominee in there.

Given the fires, I think the mood will shift dramatically in terms of Best Picture. There is evidence to show that mood plays a role in what wins, be it MOONLIGHT winning in 2016; IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT winning in 1967 at the height of the Civil Rights movement (the 1968 ceremony was actually delayed by 2 days due to Martin Luther King Jr.'s death); NOMADLAND winning during the height of the pandemic in 2020; CODA the next year as a symbol of hope and so on. Since 2011, 75% of BAFTA winners previously won the Golden Globe for their performance. 8 of the 13 exceptions won London Film Critics Circle. So whoever wins LFCC is Demi Moore's competition for the BAFTA, and probably ends up winning given BAFTA's apparent aversion to genre films. Personally, I am praying it's Marianne Jean Baptiste. She deserves to win BAFTA like trifecta sweepers Thompson, Hunter, Staunton, Mirren, and Blanchett (x2). Then she should win the Oscar too, like the majority of them did.

As of right now, Zoe Saldana has tied Margaret Qualley for critic wins. Zoe being able to overtake Grande and tie Qualley for most wins with critics when they HATE Emilia Perez tells me she's much stronger than I initially thought. EP actually has the 4th or 5th most best picture wins currently (5 wins) and it's mainly been with international bodies so they are really eating it up. I really don't know what to make of this movie. Before Jamie started surging, I would have put Gomez in my 5th spot but now I have no idea what to do with those last two spots.

OK, in Britain, Jamie Lee Curtis is also known as "Lady (Christopher) Guest". She won Best Actress in the '80s for Trading Places, and was nominated for Wanda and EEAAO (which she didn't win). I wouldn't mistake her standing within the arts establishment here as carrying over for the Oscars. Especially for her absolutely DREADFUL performance in The Last Showgirl. Additionally, the British establishment, arts or otherwise, was NEVER going to nominate a film called QUEER. Was never going to happen. Craig is a previous nominee for Casino Royale and also a BAFTA Fellowship recipient but even so, they were NEVER going to go for it. I wouldn't rule him out at the Oscars but, obviously, that 5th slot is still kind of up for grabs.
