Awesome video you debunk some of my own past miss conceptions of France. It sure is lovely and some of those smaller villages are yummy and look like pure magic. I have had the great fortune of living in a magical place and I can see some of these villages would be the same, an experience not to be missed.

I've been a subscriber since the NHR scheme was available and considered moving to Portugal. That changed with the end of NHR but we plan to move to France in 26. Everything mentioned is accurate in our experience and the tax treaty between the US and France is the best in the world. We will pay less or the same taxes as we do in rural OH as we only have passive US sourced income in retirement. It offers so much we like with just the beuracracy of moving being the only negative and learning French is a work in progress.

Not sure why we never considered living in France. We spent months traveling thru France 2017-2021 but didn’t spend much time on the mediterranean coast of France which could have been an option. Loved loved loved ~ Nerja, Spain and would probably would have settled there if it wasn’t so hot there in the summers.

Nerja was our first choice as well. But the VISA and citizenship wouldn't work for us.

My first car was a second-hand 1970 VW Bug; I wish I still had it. France has one big advantage over all other EU countries for US retirees - there are no French income taxes on US Social Security, pensions, or 401k/IRA distributions including Roth distributions. You have to file a return and declare your income, but if all your income comes from these sources, you owe no French income tax. French retirees living in the US get the same tax treatment in reverse, it's all in the France/US Tax Treaty. Portugal fell off our list of potential relocation options when they gutted the NHR.

@mikeabbott8521 - Once I was a fan of Portugal and after they changed the NHR tax rules i had to give up on the Portugal plan. I heard great reviews about the French Long term Visa in terms of how easy it is to get if you meet the Financial requirements. I am seriously contemplating it. One question I have is on the Taxes in France. You mentioned that all incomes earned in the US such as Sos Scc, 401K RMDs, Pensions /Annuities are exempt from French Taxes. How about the Dividends / income from mutual funds, stock trades in the US ? Are they also exempt? - Since I am on a higher income category in retirement the French tax rules worry me. BTW- If I may ask, Are you living in France on Long Term stay? Thanks in advance from the Great Lone Star state of Texas.

@cookmaster3626 Still in the US. I can't speak with authority on the French tax system other than what I've read in the tax treaty, which is easy to find with a Google search. I would guess that incomes not specifically exempted in the tax treaty are taxable in France, but I'm no expert. The best advice I can give is to consult a tax expert in France before you make any decisions. Ask if exempt income has to be reported on a tax return (I think it does), and if so will that push your taxable income into a higher bracket.

France really had a multitude of reasons to look at for your move abroad. Make sure when checking country to review for lifestyle, cost of living, healthcare, visa and citizenship options, taxes and inheritance laws...

How much French or Portuguese does a person need to know to converse with the locals?

Bom dia. If you move to a new place you need to plan on becoming fluent in the language. However the bigger cities in Portugal have many folks that speak English. In France you will need to use a translator in most areas until you learn the language.

You forgot to mention that Portugal canceled its NHR tax program and now if someone moves to Portugal with $2500 a month US social security they would have to pay 38% tax in Portugal.
@ItllBeFun
@ItllBeFun 15 сағат бұрын
The tax system in Portugal is graduated like in The USA. $2500 at month is about €28000. If you use the tax chart below you can get a better idea of what your tax burden would be. The 2025 adjustments aim to alleviate the tax burden on individuals by aligning the brackets with current economic conditions. Additionally, the government has introduced measures such as the expansion of the "Youth PIT" regime, which offers tax exemptions for young taxpayers up to 35 years old, and an increase in the non-taxable portion of meal allowances provided through meal vouchers. For the most accurate and personalized information, it's advisable to consult the official Portuguese Tax Authority or a tax professional. Here is the 2025 Portuguese graduated income tax chart in a simple format: Taxable Income (€) | Tax Rate (%) | Deductible Amount (€) -------------------------------------------------------------- Up to 8,059 | 13.00% | 0.00 8,060 to 12,160 | 16.50% | 282.07 12,161 to 17,233 | 22.00% | 950.91 17,234 to 22,306 | 25.00% | 1,467.91 22,307 to 28,400 | 32.00% | 3,029.38 28,401 to 41,629 | 35.50% | 4,023.14 41,630 to 44,987 | 43.50% | 7,353.76 44,988 to 83,696 | 45.00% | 8,028.38 Above 83,696 | 48.00% | 10,539.00

I was a stay at Home mom with no money in my IRA or any savings of my own, which was scary at 53 years of age. Three years ago I got a part time job and save everything I make. After 3 years, I am 56 yo and have put $9,000 in an IRA and $40,000 in my portfolio with CFA, Evelyn Infurna. Since the goal of getting a job was to invest for retirement and NOT up my lifestyle, I was able to scale this quickly to $150,000. If I can do this in a year, anyone can.

Europe or Portugal or whatever are not a shopping mall or a lifestyle outlet. We are functining countries with our own problems. You should move in to live and give something to society, not just gentrify and eke out the natives. Change the USA if you want an enjoyable country. In short, stop voting the people you vote for and start having a liveable society.
