critics choice is not even considered a precursor for most industry people if you win it helps with buzz, yes but it's like the spirit awards for all films

“Backlighting throughout”, approx 3 mins of footage in an almost 3 hour movie 😑😑😑 what about literally every other part of the cinematography of the film? Like, the choices in Wizard and I with the colour prisms make up for the backlighting ALONE, not to mention the incredible feat of marrying the practical and cg world building. So exhausting, this line of critique.

I laughed at your qualm with Flow haha but it’s my favorite film of the year so I’m happy to see it anywhere!

Nah I disagree - meows and barks are foreign languages….stop trying to silence animals - have you learnt nothing from Wicked?

And I agree I've been calling a real pain not making it just because you usually only see one indie dramedy at the Oscars and anora got that spot

I'm not a big fan of Emilia Perez, but the song Las Damas que Pasan gave me chills. I don't understand why El Mal and Mi Camino are getting all the nominations. Maybe because of who is singing? 😅

What's everyone issue with September 5 I see every channel complaining when it gets nominated it's one of my personal top ten films of the year which I might be biased being a journalist and I'm s sucker for any films in that lane but the reviews have been really good as well and it's definitely making the Oscars because people are kinda not realizing it's pretty much a unofficial prequel to Munich since it's litterly the events that lead to that film IRL

I actually quite like September 5, it's a very solid movie, albeit one that I wouldn't see factoring into the Oscar conversation in most years. The problem that I (and most others on KZbin) have with it getting nominations mostly has to do with the *reason* behind it getting nominations. Despite the fact that the film is entirely about the ethics of journalism and the birth of 24/7 action news (and its devastating consequences on the way that people consume world events), and takes no side on the current political climate, many of the people (not all!) who are propping the film up are doing so as a statement against Palestine. It's quite unfortunate that the film released *now* of all times, because again, it really has nothing to do with the current situation, but in light of what is happening in Gaza, it is impossible to separate the film from current events. It is also difficult to separate the film's awards run from the voters who are voting for it to make a statement which I know many of us in this online space disagree with the core of. I quite like the movie, but I still feel like nearly every nomination it gets is a bad faith engagement with the politics of it and what the movie is actually trying to say. - M

Conversely, nearly every complaint about its success thus far is a bad faith engagement with the presumed politics of it. You know that art forms such as cinema should be praised based on the personal enjoyment and appreciation one has for them. By people trying hard to undercut something that they have not even seen, they are favoring political stances over the art. Hopefully we will see less of this moving forward, and you will continue to praise films based on their merits.
