Yeah the foreign category was much better than the Best Picture Category, is brilliant to see a lot of the Worldwide cinema being nominated, and I think they should open more space in the category, like is the entire world in the competition and is only for 5 movies, best picture is most of the time only for american movies and has 10 movies! I finally watched Timothy Chalamet performance and as a person who dabbled into drugs and was surrounded by people who did drugs... Timothy performance was a fantasized version - such as the acting seen in “13 Reasons why” ... it was not the level of acting as the cast from Requiem for a Dream.

Cold War's directing kicks the shit out of Bradley. He's just getting started, he still makes mistakes. Pawlikowski is on point and has mastered his craft. Same as Cuarón.

Cooper's work is very normal and simple, even if Pawel was not nominated, there are so many directors better than Bradley this year, like Barry, Damian, Mariane Heller, Julian Schnabel, Nadine Libaki, Luca Guadagnino, Steven Macqueen Chloe Zao, Debra Granik, and of course Bo B. That has his first movie Eight Grade in a different level than Bradley, it was so much better so, I don't think that Bradley really deserved, let's face it A Star is Born is good, not that goood!

I think it’s amazing for the industry that outsider films like this are being recognized beyond their sole foreign category. I saw on Gold Derby before the nominations went live that Chalamet would be snubbed. I did not believe it at the time, but now I have to admit defeat. I never thought he would win, but he atleast deserved the nomination (especially over Driver, who's performance was somewhat forgetful in BKK). As you said, these nominations were all over the place, snubs in every category. Best Director surprised me the most. Cooper was a clear front runner, even though he would inevitably lose to Cuarón on Oscar night (though I still pray for Lanthimos to pull out a win). I am happy however that they are embracing more foreign films, but it would be better if they were not at the expense of quality "Hollywood" films. Every nomination Black Panther received was well deserved, I'm happy with what little the Academy gave them. Still mad about Mister Rogers, that surely would have one (and should have). I guess we all have to see in a month. My bet is either Roma or the Favourite taking home gold (they have the director overlap and the hype).

I would want The Favourite to take Best Picture but The Favourite hasn't won any sort of Best Picture anywhere. They are more likely to give it to Green Book which won the Comedy Globe over the Favourite and also won Best Film from the National Board of Review. I still think Roma will win easily but there is a chance they might give it Foreign Film then give something else Best Picture. It could also go the other away around and they might give Cold war Foreign Film then give Roma Best Picture. I still unfortunately can't see them giving it to the Favourite.

Did you guys even watch Cold War? It got a slew of important awards. In fact Pawlikowski was given best director award at Cannes and it had fantastic reviews. To nominate him and snub Cooper whose film got a lot more coverage was a blod and exciting choice on the part of the academy. Its a choice of true artful filmaking over a simple, crowd-pleasing, movie. It may not have been incessantly talked about on these channels by self professed critics and what not but just because you didn't see it and a lot less people went to see it than is true of a star is born shouldnt be a factor I dont think.

Hot take, but I thought that aside from some clunky moments, the VFX were really good. People only notice the bad VFX and overlook the fact that most of the movie looks great. The way the VFX were used was unique, unlike in other superhero movies where it's just explosions and color beams. There was a lot of world building and unique environments.

Honestly, if anything got snubbed out of visual effects it would be Annihilation. That got snubbed on everything, especially the score.
