In 1978 I had a 50 cc DAX. Tuned, of course. I still have photos, I was the king. The price back then was 900 D-Marks.

Coming from a man who has two Honda Monkeys, I’ll say this, I’m glad I got to see a Dax a couple weeks ago. Like you, I feel the Dax is over priced for what you get.. I’d prefer the Royal blue color over the grey..it should have a manual clutch, larger tank, and much more comfortable seat for that price ($4200). As it sits, I think it should be more in the $3800 range. Grab handle and passenger pegs are the only major difference aside from looks. In your position, I’d say Monkey for the look and comfort, the Grom for the price.. But I’m biased towards the Monkey, it was the very first gas powered two wheeler I ever road. So it’s a sentimental thing..
@QuasiMotard10 күн бұрын
I agree with your sentiment on the pricing. I think Honda is trying to sell "cool factor" over practical value. The $4199 MSRP is only the starting point... then there's the $300 destination fee and TT&L added to the bottom line. The real OTD price will be closer to $5K, and that's just too much for too little, in my opinion. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Monkey because of one place is practically a disqualification. I also wanted to buy it , the choice was Dax for this very reason. Monkey is at best a motorcycle for singles😅

I lean towards the Grom. Did you check out the official accessories they have for Grom? The little panniers/saddle bags are cool! I think the Grom gives one the most tech for the money besides the Super Cub. I hope it has been a happy Monday and all is well.

Agreed! The Grom is a better value and has more practical features than most of the other mini-moto's. Unfortunately, none of Honda's mini-moto lineup offers "bargain" pricing. They aren't "value" buys when you consider the fact that full-size 400's and other entry-level bikes only cost about $1K more. The Grom is the only miniature motorcycle (or anything in the sub-250cc class) that we have here in the States. Of course, there is the Kawasaki Z125 and other Chinese knock-offs in the 125 segment, but that's it... no other mainstream 125-200cc exist in our market. I wish we could get some of the fun bikes from the EU/UK market here, like the Honda CB125, Yamaha XSR125, etc ( www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/news-and-views/features/bikes/best-125cc-motorcycles ). Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I would get a grom personally. The customization on it alone makes it a great bike. Easy to change the gearing and make it a little faster and it looks super cool.

Thank you for commenting about the seat comfort on the Dax. When I was a teen I wanted a Z50A. I LOVED the look. It seemed perfect. The Monkey is a name that I hate because I really don't like monkeys. Still, I love the look of the giant Z50A in the Monkey. I owned a Grom clone that looked like a miniature Ducati Monster. It was fun. The fuel mileage was always between 105 and 107 with the carburetted engine. I don't believe that the Monkey will get 160 mpg. The Dax has a believable gas mileage figure. I don't know if I could bring myself to buy a Monkey for so much more money than a Grom. On the other hand, getting a custom seat that is just as comfortable as the Monkey's seat on a Grom, might make the Grom cost as much as the Monkey. So buying a Monkey just for the seat might be the way to go.

I like the look of the Dax, but I'm absolutely loving my 2025 Grom. It's my first bike ever so I have nothing to compare it with but it's great! Instantly makes me smile, every time I ride it, and I don't feel like I'm one mistake away from a horrific crash. Feels very manageable for me as a brand new rider, and I'm having a lot of fun on it, which is the point, right? Haha, so I'll keep my Grom, planning to throw on an exhaust, intake, and ECU tune over this winter as my wallet allows, which should liven the little bike up a good bit and that's all I'm looking for! Also, people love the Grom! I even get waves from a lot of Harley riders, which surprised me. I live about 30 minutes from the Harley Davidson factory in York PA so there's obviously a ton of Harley riders in the area, so to get a wave from them when I'm on my little Grom is neat!

Thanks for the feedback! It's great to hear a Dax owner's opinion! I rarely ride with a pillion, so the passenger accommodations aren't a factor for me. I haven't ridden the Dax yet, but I assume that it basically handles like a Monkey with the Super Cub's 4-speed transmission. I'm sure the Dax probably stops better than the Cub with the rear disc brake... that's a welcome addition, for sure. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

In 2023 I bought a Grom. It has the largest gas tank, passenger foot pegs, tachometer, lightest weight, it has panels that can be replaced ( I'm guessing possibly cheaper to fix). I got a extra padded seat cover from cheeky seats. So it feels very comfortable to me, but I haven't ridden a monkey. If I remember correctly, I'm thinking the Grom also had the lowest seat height which is important to me. Without even considering price, at the time it seemed like the best choice to me... but then it it the cheapest of the 125cc fuel injected minis also, so it seemed like the best deal until I saw a YammiNoob video where he got a new Suzuki 250 with a low seat height and massive fuel tank for $4k out the door, which looks like an outstanding bang for the buck if that deal could still be found.

I thought long and hard this year as to whether or not to get a Dax to partner my 2019 Monkey. In the end I decided against it as I particularly didn't like the seat. I did however buy a 2023 Super Cub (143 miles on it) for 500 GBP/$700 below MSRP. I think I made the right choice.
@RS-co4fu10 күн бұрын
Definitely the Dax. I was the first kid on the block with the trail 125. U got yours a couple of weeks before me. I'm thinking about getting this used R.E. Scram 411 and making it my adventure bike for cross country rides.
@QuasiMotard4 күн бұрын
Agreed! The Scram 411 is still on my short list. I was torn between the Scram and the Hunter 350 last year, but the Hunter won out with its tubless wheels/tires and retro-standard aesthetic. R-E now has the Guerrilla 450 and Himalayan 450, so that might start some great deals on leftover Himi 411's and Scram 411's. 🤔 --QM

Been waiting for you to throw a leg over one. I have to agree, the Grom is a more complete bike for less coin. Bummer about the 4 speed. If it were me I'd get a Monkey for the seat and more relaxed riding position, just sold my Grom, I'm a bit cramped on it for longer rides.
@QuasiMotard10 күн бұрын
Howdy, Tyler! You're several inches taller than me, so I can understand the cramped legs on the Grom. The ergo's fit me fine, but I think the hard seat might wear me down after a while. Do you still have any mini-motos in your stable? 😉👍 --QM
@zamdrang10 күн бұрын
@QuasiMotard yeah the Grom seat is pretty hard, even with the air hawk I needed frequent breaks, if the Dax is anything like it that's too bad. I still have the Navi and still my favorite of all I've owned. Seat sucks too, but I cut a slice of foam out to level it and use an airhawk, much improved. Did a 2 day 400 mile ride before it got cold and my butt was fine. Still have the ADV150 if one considers that a mini moto... definitely a cut above all the rest in the comfort dept, as you know!

My brother, who still has his old CT70H (bought back in the early 2000s when they were dirt cheap), really wants to get a DAX. My advice to him was to hold tight, and to not pay much over MSRP.....regardless of how much any dealer tries to tell him how "in demand" they are. From what I've been seeing, nothing is moving very well right now. The local dealers here have new CT125's that are sitting on the floor at MSRP plus freight plus tax. The expect a DAX or so in the near future, so I'll be curious how long they have one. I'm usually in there once every couple of weeks so I'll have to check it out if they do. He wants the saphire blue color and not the grey, but none of that color are showing up anywhere in inventory, so I'm guessing they aren't over here yet. We'll see if he ends up withe one or not. Seing these released has made me feel nostalgic, so when a non-running 1974 ST90 popped up locally, I couldn't resist snagging it 😅. Minus the larger wheels, I actually think those resemble the DAX better than the CT70 does.

I would get the grom but if I wanted a clutchless it would be super cub.
@QuasiMotard4 күн бұрын
Agreed 💯! That's my take on the Dax as well... there are too many compromises compared to the Super Cub. The Cub's 17" wheels are a game changer for high-speed stability and for smoothing out the ride. I would love to have better front forks and more suspension travel on the Cub, but it's hard to beat as a city bike or as a relaxed back road tourer. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

There is literally no such thing as the end of the riding season the writing cities and is continuous all year round sometimes you gotta pause a little bit if there’s like deep snow but other than that, nope riding season does not end
@QuasiMotard4 күн бұрын
That might be true for "real motorcyclists" like you and me, but most people park their bikes when the temps drop below the 50's. Living in the southern states extends the riding season almost year-round because we rarely freeze here... very rare to have ice or snow. That's where I draw the line... no freezing precipitation for my 2-wheeled adventures! 🤣👍 --QM

@ so I’m saying this and I live in New York State last year. I took my car in three times because of heavy snow. I have already had to do full Michelin man this year. Wow! The Dax is the worst in nearly every way! Why the the fuel economy so drastically different when it's the same damn engine and roughly the same weight!? On paper it looks like the Grom is still the best bet, though I wonder if the riding position would even be tolerable for me (if the foot pegs are too far back it causes discomfort in my hip joint). The Monkey looks the most dopey, but really does seem like the best overall, and I have to admit that every single time I've sat on one in a dealer I just started giggling like a little kid. I dunno. I still love all of these tiny motos, and sincerely wish they made the Trail 125 (the best looking mini hands down IMO) with the Super Cub gearing and Grom/Monkey transmission, but even then I fear it wouldn't have enough guts for even the modest riding that I do. Then again, it's been 2.5 months since my own accident (not nearly as bad as yours, but still required ambulance), and weather hasn't cooperated since the shop finished fixing my bike, so I'm starting to build anxiety about getting back on 2 wheels. I got really lucky that my injuries weren't more serious. I really need to push through the fear and get back out there, though, as riding provided me a lot of stress relief.
