@ Yeah same situation here, I got the 2021 Legion 5 Pro with the 3070 (unfortunately not the Legion 7...), and was looking to upgrade to exactly this Legion Pro 7i with a 5090, but these design choices are questionable at best, I would never want to use a laptop looking like this in public, or even at home really, it's just ugly. Despite my laptop being more gamer-y than the 2021 Legion 7, it still looks way better compared to this... Disappointed.

OLED is no problem for me. The biggest problem for me is the i/o ports all moved to the side. 2023 and 2024 designs were the best for me as It looks clean because I don't have to look at the messy cabling too much and can focus more on pluggging my USB drive when working or gaming. I really wanted a Legion Pro 5 or Pro 7 even though I only have an Ideapad Gaming 3 with 165HZ, i5 12500H and RTX 3050Ti as it was in my budget. And now I feel dissapointed in what Pro 7 and Pro 5 has become plus no AMD due to either "intel OEM collaboration" or as one comment mentioned that AMD CPUs coudn't handle a new NVIDIA feature which is why they didn't add it in their lineup. This is just my opinion though. Wish the I/O were back in the rear end of the laptop. It's all I care about now.

You don't know why it's being hated? Let me fill you in, they removed the rear IO for some tacky light show and yet again the keyboard deck is cheap plastic. The L7 used to mean premium feel and minimalist look and had all metal chassis' before gen 8. PSA: If you want what Lenovo used to offer then take look into the XMG Neo 16.

I like the design of the new XMG Neo 16, although I probably won’t like its price. It’s best to wait for a Black Friday deal, or order the same chassis from PC Specialist, who don’t have G-Sync but have lower prices than XMG, with the caveat that their laptops are rarely discounted.

The new rear design is a bad imitation of Alienware's halo, and AW still manages to get a ton of ports on the rear even with the exhausts and lighting. Big downgrade imo that looks like a cheap Clevo idea. I was also hoping to see an 18" from them this go around, too bad.

The design of this laptop doesn't appeal to me. The light bar at the back feels unnecessary, and the ports on the sides aren't positioned in a way I prefer. Additionally, the fingerprints that accumulate around the keyboard are frustrating. I hope Lenovo takes this feedback into account and redesigns the laptop to address these issues before it negatively affects sales.

Many thanks for this video. What I am thoroughly confused about is what on earth Lenovo are doing about their Legion 9i. This is reportedly their top of the range laptop, despite being released in December 2023. I was assuming they would be updating it with a 5090 (and preferably an AMD CPU), but they have been utterly silent. Do you have any idea whether it is worth me waiting for an updated 9i to be released later this year, or whether I should give up and look at other manufacturers? Many thanks for any advice you can offer.

there will be no 9i because it was overpriced water cooling gimmick. The 7i gave you the same performance with a much cheaper price tag. 7i is the flagship now.

My only hesitation with the new Pro 7i is that Lenovo have not explicitly confirmed the discontinuance of the 9i, and so (a) I don't want to buy a Pro 7i and then find that a more powerful 9i is released; and (b) *I freely acknowledge that this makes me shallow and pathetic*, but I do rather like the 9i's fancy carbon lid! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The ports were removed for the new thermal design with the vapor chamber and new ventilation and RGB. I do like my ports on the sides, but I think there are also just less ports this time around too.

even though 3mm is more efficient than 4nm, the raw power of desktop 4090 is just too much for laptop gpu limited to 175w to reach in terms of performance, and if assumptions or testing can be confirmed, the raw performance of laptop 5080 may be around the same level as laptop 4090 but with more fake frames if frame gen is turned on

The biggest mistake is that they keep pushing high native resolutions on these things. In 1080p the RTX 4090 is a true beast that doesn't require DLSS on the most demanding games (like Cyberpunk, for instance). The problem is only that on a (I have Legion i7 gen 9) 1600p screen, the 1080p looks like shit since it's not native resolution.

Only 2 TB seem a little bit too low for storage, a lot of vendors will offer more. The screen is 240 Hz, other vendors have 300 Hz screens, its only advantage being that it is OLED. The RAM is maxed out at 64 GB and it is the low powered LPDDR5X, other vendors offer 96 GB or even 192 GB. There doesn’t seem to be an option for AMD CPUs. Overall, not too impressive. I expected more from Lenovo. Looking forward to XMG laptops, even though they are expected to be quite pricey.

Not gonna lie - you’re asking for a ton within this price range. I don’t know how you fit more than 2TB storage out the box, a 300Hz screen, and support for 96GB+ RAM with this type of build quality or display quality for around $2400.

@ XMG can fit 2x4 TB on its previous generation. It also fits 96 GB RAM clocked at 4800 MHz only. The new generation supports 6400 MHz. A fully configured XMG Neo 16 (2024 generation) with a 4 TB SSD costs 3886€ (Europe company). I heard their Black Friday deals can cut up to 600€ from the price. That brings it to more reasonable levels. I’ll wait and see. PC Specialist from UK offers the same chassis with almost the exact same specs, the exception being that their internal screens don’t have G-Sync. A laptop configured similarly to the one from XMG costs about 3250€ right now.

I just don't understand this hysteria of pushing the resolution up on the small laptops. Just unnecessary use of already stressed (being scaled down / mobile / laptop version) GPU resources. They should have stayed on 1080p. I assume that 5090 RTX will be far less performing compared to the desktop version, just like older GPUs.
